The best thing about diving into a deep shipwreck is you never know what amazing marine animals you might encounter. Suddenly you turn a corner of the shipwreck and you are face to face with a giant sea turtle. As a diver, a proper (friendly) stare down with our friend the giant Green Turtle is an amazing experience every time. I met this giant turtle on the Vandenberg shipwreck just outside of Key West, Florida. You too can experience diving with sea turtles in many places throughout the world, but numbers are decreasing. In fact 6 of the 7 sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered. There are many easy things you can do to help our sea turtle friends in surviving such as not using reusable plastics and not supporting the production/use of balloons which our friend mistakes for food when they end up in the oceans. The current Greece / Turkey border crisis reminds me of our encounter recently at the Greece Turkey sea border off the coast of Kos. Not exactly 'Greece under attack' as some media reports have been saying but it demonstrates how it's not just about rubber dinghies full of immigrants or refugees. This jetskier easily evaded the Hellenic Coast Guard high speed boarder patrols, dropped off a passenger on Kos and returned to Turkish waters in the space of about 20 minutes! This was a very special encounter with a beautiful eagle ray sifting through the sand for a tasty meal. As bottom feeders, eagle rays hunt for prey on the seafloor. Like stingrays, their mouths are on the underside of their bodies. However, they also have a protruding snout full of electro-sensory pores that work as a kind of food radar. Eagle rays are carnivores with specialized flat teeth designed for grinding and crushing crustaceans and molluscs. However, they aren't fussy eaters and will also chow down on worms, small fish and even octopuses.
