See the manufacturing technology that sets North Sails apart. Take a look inside North Sails’ brand new UK sail loft. The loft is based in Gosport, on the southern coast of the UK, and houses a number of global departments under one roof. These include Superyacht finishing and sail production for One Design and North Sails 3Di. As NorthSails’ European flagship facility, the loft enables North Sails to remain at the forefront of sail technology, innovation and manufacturing. Gosport is the first loft in the world to specialise in superyacht sails, and it’s gigantic raised floor – measuring 1,950m2 – is the largest ever built. A team of 9 designers and 82 staff members are aided by state-of-the-art technology and equipment, ensuring sails are delivered quickly, and safely – with no compromises in quality. The space is split into two manufacturing bays, and the main floor is designed to cater to superyacht sail finishing. Measuring 101x30m, the space can accommodate two J-Class headsails and a mainsail laid out simultaneously. The secondary bay is dedicated to One Design sailmaking and Certified Service sail care. The construction of the Tower began in 1173. Originally designed to be a bell tower, it stood upright for over 5 years, but when the third floorwas completed in 1178 it began to lean. Italians were shocked by the event, as the tower began to lean ever so slightly. The thing is the foundation of the tower, which is only 3-meter deep, was built on a dense clay mixture. This mix impacted the soil and furthermore the clay was not strong enough to hold the tower upright. As a result the weight of the tower began to diffuse downward until it had found the weakest point. Due to this problem, construction works stopped for 100 years. The government decided to focus on its war with Genoa and hope that the soil would settle in the meantime.
