March 11 marks the anniversary of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan. In the days after the disaster, I joined an early helicopter reconnaissance flight over the devastated coastline identifying communities needing immediate help and then supporting those communities and they rebuilt lives and restarted businesses. The destruction was almost impossible to comprehend. But what followed was equally powerful: communities rebuilding together. With island, reef and rainforest together, along with a dedicated classroom facility and led by Quicksilver Group marine biologists, the Green Island Living Classroom has been praised by teachers as providing place-based education at its best.
