Doing a rig check before offshore sailing? Here’s how we inspect our rigging before every passage. From the top of the mast, we check for cracked fittings, loose pins, corrosion, and halyard chafe — the small things that can turn into big problems at sea. We use a climbing harness (or a bosun’s chair works too), a figure 8 knot for extra security, and always a backup halyard. Clear communication and double-checking gear are key when one of you is literally hoisting the other up the mast. Welcome aboard our family-friendly adventure! We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance cruising catamaran named "Archer!" Twelve years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world from the East Coast of the US to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and by happenstance created one of the first "sailing channels" on YouTube. But more than anything, we realized what an incredible experience that first trip was and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. We want to share with them the importance of taking time to be with family. To show them a world outside of the one they grew up in. We want them to appreciate how lucky we are to experience the natural beauty of this world. This video was taken by the skipper of a 54ft yacht in the Caribbean. The situation was that the skipper questioned the legendary speed under sail of the Shearwater 45, so Steve Hunt, the owner of "Maggy May", challenged him to a race to the next island and gave him a head-start of nearly 40 minutes. This was taken as the 45 sailed past him. It continued through his lee and arrived in port an hour ahead of the 54. See more info at http://dixdesign.com/sh45.htm .
