Snowflakes dancing on the deck, and then – wow! Look at that plane emerging from the swirling white chaos. Taking off from a frozen airstrip, right there at the edge of the world. The cruise ship's a pretty awesome vantage point, giving us front-row seats to this arctic drama. Imagine the skill it takes to pilot a plane in these conditions. The icy runway disappearing into the blizzard. This is one serious adventure, even from the comfort of our warm cabin. This little guy was bobbing around our boat this morning for at least an hour - FAST ASLEEP!! I touched him a couple of times as he came right up against the sugar scoop and was amazed at just how hot his little flipper "solar panel" was! Seals float around like this with their flippers out of the water in the sunshine, as a way of warming up, so I thought that his flipper would obviously be warmer than our 13 degreeC water but was really surprised by just how hot it was. He was totally oblivious to my touching him over and over - super relaxed and fast asleep.
