Sabato 15 gennaio, alle ore 01:51:41 ora locale di Grenada (05:51:41 UTC, 06:51:41 ora italiana), Maserati Multi 70 ha tagliato per prima il traguardo dell’8a edizione della RORC Transatlantic Race, organizzata dal Royal Ocean Racing Club in collaborazione con Yacht Club de France. Lo skipper Giovanni Soldini ha navigato insieme a Vittorio Bissaro, Oliver Herrera Perez, Thomas Joffrin, Francesco Pedol, Matteo Soldini, in una corsa lanciata attraverso l’Atlantico da Lanzarote a Grenada (2995 miglia nautiche), che ha visto l’equipaggio concludere la prova con un tempo reale di 6 giorni, 18 ore, 51 minuti e 41 secondi. Al termine della competizione, il trimarano si lascia alle spalle 3476.5 miglia reali con una velocità media di 21,4 nodi. I tempi saranno ratificati dall’organizzazione della regata nelle prossime ore. In seconda posizione, a qualche miglia di distanza: PowerPlay di Peter Cunningham con skipper Ned Collier Wakefield, e a bordo i velisti inglesi Giles Scott (tattico di Ineos Team UK in Coppa America e vincitore di due ori olimpici nella classe Finn) e Miles Seddon (che con Phaedo3 nel 2015 ha stabilito il record su questa tratta). Terzo sulla linea di arrivo: Argo di Jason Carroll con skipper Brian Thompson. “E’ stata una regata al cardiopalma! Il nostro equipaggio ha dato il massimo e Maserati Multi70 ha fatto davvero la differenza,” esulta Soldini: “Sono molto soddisfatto. Il frutto del lavoro di questi anni è sotto i nostri occhi. E’ stato un percorso lunghissimo di ricerca e sviluppo: attraverso record, giri del mondo e competizioni abbiamo continuato a cercare soluzioni e la barca è gradualmente giunta a una maturazione che le consente un volo stabile e in sicurezza con performance nettamente superiori – almeno in queste condizioni -, a quelle dei suoi avversari che pure stanno seguendo da anni la stessa strada e viaggiano con le ultime generazioni di foil. I progressi aerodinamici e cinetici fatti nell’ultimo anno grazie al contributo degli ingegneri del Maserati Innovation Lab e del progettista Guillaume Verdier, sono evidenti”. Questa edizione della regata ha contato sulla partecipazione di 32 imbarcazioni, provenienti da più di 22 paesi. Maserati Multi 70 e i suoi concorrenti sono partiti l’8 gennaio alle 11:00 UTC / ora locale (ore 12:00 in Italia) da Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, con vento da Est. Condizioni meteo complicate hanno indirizzato i MOD70 verso una rotta più a nord nell’oceano, in cerca del vento. La prima parte della regata ha visto dominare PowerPlay, seguita a distanza di un centinaio di miglia da Argo e Maserati Multi70, ma il duello tra i tre trimarani, nella flotta di testa, non si è mai spento. Maserati Multi70, in assetto volante, ha navigato all’inseguimento accorciando le distanze lungo l’Atlantico, malgrado la rottura del timone sinistro occorsa a poche miglia dalla partenza per un impatto con un oggetto galleggiante. All’aggancio con gli Alisei i trimarani hanno agitato le acque avviando un duello serrato di strambate e a circa 500 miglia da Grenada, la competizione tra i tre MOD70 ha finito per concentrarsi in uno specchio di dieci miglia, preparando le basi per un finale di corsa spettacolare. A 250 miglia circa dal traguardo il trimarano italiano è andato in testa e, in contropiede sui MOD avversari che hanno scelto di passare a sud, è scivolato a nord dell’isola di Barbados, da cui è riemerso con un vantaggio più stabile che lo ha accompagnato fino a Quarantine Point.
