Back in my remote island village in Japan. The more time I spend traveling through Japan’s longevity hotspots, the more I notice the same patterns repeating themselves. Connection. Routine. Seasonality. Calmness. Community. Not as abstract ideas, but woven into everyday life. Perhaps healthy aging is shaped as much by environment and belonging as by biology. Another Field Note from Japan. About me: I’m Lowell Sheppard, 71, sailor, author, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. I’m the Founder of the Never Too Late Academy and Special Advisor to the International Forum. Through Japan Solo Field Notes, I explore aging, place, and community across Japan. https://www.nevertoolateacademy.com/post/is-japan-producing-its-last-cohort-of-super-agers #Japan #Longevity #HealthyAging #JapanSolo #Community #SlowLiving #JapanLife #Aging #LifeLessons #Mindfulness #IslandLife

We had just finished installing our Auto Pilot and took her out so we could do the calibrations. Well, while we were out, we couldn't help but take her for a "spin" - please forgive the expletive at the end, I just couldn't contain myself! If you enjoyed the video, please give it a thumbs up! Subscribe at http://youtube.com/svrocinante We're a Live-aboard, Sailing Couple and we started this journey almost 14 years ago, when we purchased our first sailboat, a Catalina 30 TRBS in 2003! A lot has changed since then and we hope to share our ongoing adventure with the world! As we start to add content, you'll find that this is much more than a sailing channel, it is about embracing life & finding out how little you need to be truly happy! We'll share beautiful sunsets, gorgeous vistas, amazing food and most importantly the exceptional people we meet along the way. So join us as we continue our journey and you just might decide to get out there yourself - if nothing else, we're sure to make you smile! You just met "The One Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken" in a Bangkok park. Seeing a 2-meter Asian Water Monitor (known scientifically as Varanus salvator) just 1 meter away is a true Jurassic Park moment in the middle of the urban jungle. But in Thailand, this giant reptile is more than just wildlife — it's a living superstition. Locals call them "Hia," a word so heavy with bad luck it's used as a forbidden insult. To protect the local culture and bring fortune, we use the nickname "Tua Ngern Tua Thong" (Silver and Gold). But as a culinary anthropologist, I have to give you a warning: despite their calm look, these are apex predators. This protected species is vital to the Bangkok ecosystem, but they are dangerous. ⚠️ WHY YOU MUST STAY AWAY: The Bite: A toxic cocktail of bacteria and mild venomous enzymes. The Tail: A powerful whip that protects their territory. The Speed: They rule both land and water with lightning reflexes. They are beautiful to observe from a safe distance, but never forget: you are in THEIR territory. 🇹🇭 Would you dare to stand this close to a real-life dragon? Tell me in the comments! 👇
