Why do we call the right side of a boat “starboard”? The term comes from the way early ships were steered. Before centerline rudders became common, vessels were often controlled with a large steering oar mounted on the right side of the hull. That side became known as the “steering side,” or “steer-board.” Over time, the pronunciation evolved into “starboard.” That old steering arrangement also helps explain why ships often came alongside with their left side facing the dock - leaving the steering oar on the starboard side clear. #sailing #sailingschool #sailboat
