Argostoli op Kefalonia is bekend om de vele schildpadden die hier het hele jaar door zwemmen. Dat heeft te maken met de lange, ondiepe en beschutte baai. Het water is rustig, er zijn regelmatig vissers dus er is voedsel genoeg en er zwemmen een paar honderd schildpadden door de hele baai. Het zijn dikkopschildpadden – Caretta caretta, in het Engels loggerhead sea turtle. Ze heten zo vanwege hun relatief enorme kop en krachtige kaken, waarmee ze onder andere schelpdieren en andere harde prooien kunnen kraken. Ze zijn echt groot. Een volwassen Caretta caretta wordt doorgaans ongeveer 75 tot 105 cm lang en kan zo'n 90 tot 160 kilo wegen. Wanneer je er eentje ziet zwemmen, is het formaat veel indrukwekkender dan op foto's.
