Episode 12 out now! 🌊 🎥 Sailing Sardinia to Tunisia to close out our very first season. https://youtu.be/CQzsAhNT9K4?si=BQbaY0-C5STt0-ne After two weeks of solo sailing down Sardinia’s rugged west coast, Sam reunites with Vika in Cagliari for one last taste of Italy before we check Kaia — our Lagoon 440 catamaran — out of Europe and make our way to Tunisia, Africa! With our three sailing dogs back onboard, we set off on our longest passage yet: 40 hours across the Mediterranean, two nights at sea, fiery sunsets, star-filled skies, and the steady rhythm of open water carrying us towards a brand new continent. Halfway along the Tunisian coast, we tried to drop anchor for a short rest — only to be told by the coastguard that anchoring wasn’t allowed. Tired but determined, we pushed on through a second night passage before finally reaching Monastir Marina. At last, Kaia is safely tied up in her new winter berth in Tunisia, where we begin life as full-time liveaboards in North Africa. Season One of Sailing Sacred Seas may be over, but this is only the beginning — the adventure continues from our new home in Tunisia! Coral Spawning was first scientifically witnessed 30 years ago by several marine biologists working on the Great Barrier Reef. It's Mother Nature's way of maintaining a consistently robust coral gene pool. Predicting when the coral spawing will occur is not an exact science but does rely on several environmental cues. The ocean temperature needs to be 26 degrees celcius or above for the month before for the gametes to mature. Secondly, they will generally reproduce 4 to 6 nights after the full moon in November or December when there is little tidal movement. Thirdly, it will generally be about 2-3 hours after the sun sets, because it's nice and romantic!, but more importantly most of the plankton feeders will be asleep, giving the eggs more time to settle to the relative safety of the reef. A quick video to show you what the situation is like here on the Easter coast of Sicily while a Medicane (mediterranean hurricane) is striking the port. We are working non-stop to secure the boat and avoid damages.
