Sunshine and a steady 6 knots to 8 knots of breeze breeze greeted the competitors for Race 3 of Strangford Lough narrows regatta. GTR has some ground to make up after dropping back to mid fleet. With the angle free but not free enough to fly the spinnaker it was the perfect moment to deploy the Code Zero. With the both sails set and trimmed in GTR was doing two to one over its nearest rivals which allowed them to eat into the lead and eventually take the race win. The team at Bottom Up Boats hope you are enjoying our short bits from the 2024 racing season on Strangford lough.

We sail on the good ship Saracen, a Beneteau Oceanis 473 from 2006. Out journey started in Scotland in early 2023 and our ultimate goal is to sail around the globe …..slowly. We make these videos mostly for family and friends and to create a record of our adventures for ourselves so that we can look back at them later in life, were not in it to make money (way to hard). Thanks for taking an interest and please remember to leave a like, comment and subscribe to our channel, as this helps push the algorithm as we strive to boost our viewers. Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well? What can I improve? Is it time for you to train?
