In the medium wind, you need to get the boat moving forward before accelerating. It is not easy to accelerate from a dead stop. In order to get the boat going, it's the orientation to the wind should be closer to perpendicular, but no lower than a close reach. The trick is arriving there without sliding sideways which is using a combination of the sculling and easing sheet. You are permitted by #rule42 to scull to close-hauled then you must sail the rest of the way. You begin acceleration from below close-hauled because it is more perpendicular to the wind and allows the foils to grip properly.
