Adrenaline charged moments as Turn the Tide on Plastic passes inches from spectator boats just behind Hun Hung Kai / Scallywag less than two minutes after start. Turn the Tide on Plastic, one of seven teams in this edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, set sail from Alicante today for the start of the epic 45,000 nautical mile round-the-world race. After months of preparation, British skipper Dee Caffari lead her young crew out of Alicante, Spain on the beginning of what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest adventures of their lives. The start, consisting of a short in-shore circuit before heading offshore to Lisbon, was certainly no disappointment. Filled with action, drama and some of the most intense battles this race has seen at its start, this edition is showing all the signs that it could be the most exciting yet. Mangroves exist all over the world, however, most of the time the mangroves occupy estuaries and murky bays. Raja Amapt is the exception, many of it's mangroves are in clear blue water and full of lovely coral and unique fish species. Since mangroves only grow in very shallow water, this makes them ideal for snorkeling. Mangroves are a highly unique area to explore as it's an entirely different ecosystem from your typical reefscape. The roots from the mangrove create serpentine structures where a myriad of juvenile fish seek refuge, including baby black tips. One fish you wont see on an ordinary reef is the archer fish. This unassuming little fish swims close to the surface looking for terestrial insects climbing on the roots above water. When it spots one, it takes aim and shoots a precise stream of water at the insect knocking it into the water where it can then devour it. Regardless of the interesting marine life who call the mangroves home, the overall scenery is enough to take your breath away, particualy at that special time of the day when the sun's light pierces the dense canopy above creating a totally surreal environment as you float along in the placid waters.
