► Since 1973, the La Rochelle Boat Show, known simply as “Le Grand Pavois” in French, has been THE not-to-be-missed afloat show on France’s Atlantic coast. With 750 boats on display and a record 80,000 visitors, the 2023 event (that ran from September 20 to 25, so a little earlier than usual) clearly benefited from the scheduled absence of the Paris Boat Show at the end of the year. According to the organizers, no more than 10 square feet was left available at the Port des Minimes! Of course, the Multihulls World team was there. Part of doing an engine check before going out is to check the raw water strainer. Because the water is, well, raw. It is seawater that helps to cool the engine and move the exhaust out of the boat. Grass can show up in seawater, so can critters. We opened the strainer, and something popped out. I told Cindy, "Keep track of that spring!" Then the spring kept flopping around. WOW! Truckers would call the procedure a pre-trip. I never caught a fish while pre-tripping a truck.
