The Corryvreckan Whirlpool is situated off the west coast of Scotland between the islands of Jura and Scarba. It is one of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and it is said that at certain times the roar is so loud that it can be heard ten miles away. At full strength the currents can reach over 10 knots and produce waves over 9 m high. Salona 45 raced by the Irish Defence Force in the Beaufort Cup beating up the shore to stay out of the tide shortly after the start of the Harbour Race of Cork Week 2024. With over 100 boats on the start line everyone was fighting for air shortly after the start, with the tide coming in all day it paid to get right early to find both clear air and some relief from the stronger tide out in the main channel.
