The island of Vis, nestled in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia, is a true gem for sailors and adventurers. Known for its secluded bays, crystal-clear waters, and rich history, Vis offers the perfect escape from the busy mainland. One of the highlights of a sailing trip around Vis is the breathtaking Zaglav Beach, a haven of serenity and natural beauty. In this post, I’ll take you on a journey around the island and share the magic of swimming in the turquoise waters of Zaglav. Setting Sail Around Vis Island As you set sail from the harbor of Vis Town or Komiža, you’ll be greeted by the calm blue of the Adriatic and a coastline dotted with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and charming fishing villages. The wind is usually favorable, making for smooth sailing, while the stunning scenery keeps you enchanted at every turn. The journey around Vis takes you past iconic spots like Stiniva Bay, the Blue Cave on Biševo Island, and the military tunnels that reveal the island's fascinating past. The best part of sailing around Vis is the sense of isolation. While the Croatian coast has become a popular destination, Vis remains a bit off the beaten path, preserving its untouched nature. Sailing close to the island, you can see the dense pine forests and vineyards that cover the hillsides, giving the island a distinct, wild charm. Discovering Zaglav Beach As you round the southern tip of the island, you’ll come across one of Vis’s most stunning beaches—Zaglav. This pristine sandy beach is located in a secluded bay just a short sail from the village of Milna. Zaglav is renowned for its soft, golden sand (a rarity in Croatia, where pebble beaches are more common) and its shallow, crystal-clear waters that shimmer in shades of turquoise and emerald. Zaglav is accessible only by boat or a short walk from Milna, which adds to its tranquility. When you anchor offshore and approach the beach, the calmness of the place is palpable. Unlike more tourist-heavy spots, Zaglav remains quiet, offering a perfect retreat for those seeking peace. Swimming in Paradise Swimming at Zaglav Beach is like diving into a natural pool. The water is incredibly clear, and the sandy seabed feels soft underfoot. With the sun reflecting off the surface, the colors of the sea create a mesmerizing effect, making it hard to resist staying in the water for hours. The shallow waters make it perfect for leisurely swims or floating peacefully as you take in the view of the surrounding hills. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can explore the nearby coves and swim along the rocky coastline. With snorkeling gear, you’ll find plenty of marine life just beneath the surface, adding another layer of enjoyment to your swim. A Slice of Island Life After spending time in the water, Zaglav Beach is ideal for lounging on the sand and soaking up the sun. The beach is largely undeveloped, with just a small beach bar offering refreshments. This simplicity enhances the experience, allowing you to fully connect with nature. You can bring your own picnic, relax under the shade of the pine trees, and enjoy the serenity of the surroundings. For sailors, Zaglav is an excellent overnight stop. You can anchor your boat nearby, enjoy a sunset swim, and then relax on deck as the stars come out over the Adriatic. The isolation of the beach means there’s little light pollution, so the night sky is breathtakingly clear. Sailing Back As you leave Zaglav behind and continue your journey around Vis, the memories of that tranquil beach will stay with you. The combination of smooth sailing, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters makes a trip around Vis truly unforgettable. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or simply looking for a unique way to experience Croatia’s islands, Vis offers something magical, and Zaglav Beach is the perfect place to pause, swim, and connect with the natural beauty of the Adriatic. Final Thoughts Sailing around Vis and discovering the quiet charm of Zaglav Beach is a journey filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and moments of pure relaxation. The island’s unspoiled beauty, combined with the thrill of navigating its waters, makes it a must-visit for any sailing enthusiast. Whether you’re seeking adventure or a peaceful retreat, Vis—and especially Zaglav Beach—offers a slice of paradise you won’t want to leave. So, if you’re planning your next sailing adventure in Croatia, don’t miss the chance to explore Vis and dive into the turquoise waters of Zaglav. It’s a destination that will linger in your memory long after the sails are down. So if you’re planning a sailing trip around Croatia’s islands, set your course for Vis with Alitis Yachting—you won’t regret it.
