How to save someone that goes overboard and you’ve got both sails up? Without tacking or jibing, you go into a broad reach, bring the sails in tight, and heave-to. The sheets stay as they were. You’re effectively putting the sails over to the wrong side of the boat. By doing this you put the boat in position for the casualty to drift towards the boat and you also stop forward motion.
