The day actually started at 1:30 a.m. The wind died completely, so I had to hand steer through the night. Which is as exhausting as it sounds. By the time morning came, instead of starting the day like I usually do, I just needed to sleep. Tried to rest during the day, but it’s never easy sleeping when the sun is up and your body is confused. So not much actual sleep… but at least some rest. At some point I gave up on trying to sleep and made a cappuccino instead. That helped. We also realized we were stuck in a proper wind hole. Completely still, while everyone around us was sailing with good wind. We were talking to other boats and they were double reefed and flying… and we were just sitting there. A bit frustrating. Eventually we got out of it, and suddenly everything made sense again. Wind filled in, boat started moving, and we were back in it. The highlight of the day though… dolphins. First time in 20 days. They just showed up out of nowhere, and it completely changed the mood. One of those moments that reminds you why you’re out here. And on top of that, the wind finally shifted in our favor. We’re now doing around 5.5 knots in the right direction, which feels amazing after the last few days. Tried calling Daniel on the VHF as well. He could hear me perfectly, but I couldn’t hear him at all. So that’s a bit of a concern, especially since I’ve been having some issues with the AIS as well. Definitely something I need to figure out. But overall… a pretty normal day out here. Today was my birthday. We had hoped to be in Faial by now, but we are still one day away due to a low pressure system that pushed us in the wrong direction for days. Birthdays for me is my favorite thing. I love to spoil others, make them feel special on their day - but even more I love my birthday! And Gabi knows this. And she knew it would be a chance it would be celebrated at sea - so she came prepared and made my birthday absolutely amazing. The highlight was maybe the letters she had gathered from family and friends for me to bring with me to the GGR and read of I’m having a bad day. It’s such a privilege to have friends like that. That will go through all that work to make sure I feel loved 🫶🏼 Thank you Gabi for making my day so special. Today was the last day of this crossing. 24 days - but we finally made it. I can’t explain how great it felt arriving after battling the seas and weather for this long. The island of Faial was like a long lost friend.
