The cockpit is where we spend most of our time while sailing. It’s not just where we navigate Vela, but also a space for dining, working, and planning our next adventure. 🗺 Why a center cockpit, you ask? 🔹 It’s closer to the mast, giving us more stability at sea. 🔹 Enclosed protection keeps us safe and dry in bad weather. 🌧 🔹 Perfect for long-term cruising—though it’s a bit smaller than an aft cockpit, it’s a trade-off we’re happy to make. This winter, we’re upgrading the enclosure for better visibility while docking—ready for new adventures at anchor. 🌅 What do you think? In this video we’re sailing upwind in 35+ knots of breeze in Johnstone Strait during the VanIsle360 race with a double-reefed main sail and storm jib. A crew member is on the foredeck securing the #3 jib we had previously been flying in the short video https://youtube.com/shorts/VRAEp8M49Y4, but ripped in half. The head literally ripped right off. He is wearing a harness and tether! The sky is completely blue, but everybody is still completely soaked from the spray. Lots of sails were destroyed in that leg, including the #3 jib that is now on the foredeck.
