In the medium wind, you need to get the boat moving forward before accelerating. It is not easy to accelerate from a dead stop. In order to get the boat going, it's the orientation to the wind should be closer to perpendicular, but no lower than a close reach. The trick is arriving there without sliding sideways which is using a combination of the sculling and easing sheet. You are permitted by #rule42 to scull to close-hauled then you must sail the rest of the way. You begin acceleration from below close-hauled because it is more perpendicular to the wind and allows the foils to grip properly. Also, the process of adding weight and heading up optimizes the speed in which you arrive at full speed. We consider the acceleration to be one of the most important fundamentals in our sport as it teaches control that can be applied to every aspect of boat handling and speed You might notice several other nuances in the video.
