Goodbye, Wahine… for now. I’m heading to mainland Japan for a few weeks to work on the second draft of my book and continue research. Life aboard a sailboat, especially in typhoon season, means constant prep. She’s secured, bug-bombed (yuck), and floating in Buren Bay by an abandoned Pearl Farm. I paddled ashore on Mitsu’s SUP just before the fumes kicked in. Boat life teaches adaptability. Writer’s life demands solitude and space. This journey blends both. I’ll be back in a few weeks. Despite its name, the #FlyingGurnard does not actually fly in the air like a bird or insect. Its specialised pectoral fins are actually enlarged and resemble wings. These "wings" are brightly coloured and have intricate patterns, making them visually striking. When threatened or startled, the Flying Gurnard spreads its pectoral fins wide open, creating the illusion of flight as it glides through the #water. This display serves as a defence mechanism to intimidate potential predators and deter them from attacking. While it may not truly fly, the Flying Gurnard's unique adaptation allows it to move gracefully and swiftly #underwater.
