El delfรญn comรบn llegรณ a ser la especie de cetรกceo mรกs frecuente en el Mediterrรกneo, ha sufrido un declive dramรกtico en el รบltimo medio siglo, encontrรกndose en la actualidad sรณlo de forma abundante principalmente en el mar de Alborรกn. La principal amenaza es la sobreexplotaciรณn pesquera de sus principales presas (sardinas y boquerones), aunque tambiรฉn se ven gravemente afectados por su captura accidental con artes de pesca o pesca fantasma (artes de pesca a la deriva), y la captura directa hasta los aรฑos 50 debido a la competencia de los recursos con los pescadores.
