First Chesapeake sail on my 1981 Cape Dory 28 since the bottom paint job in March 2025. With a special guest: our brand new daughter.
Barnacle Blasting, Sand, Paint, Splash! Prepping my 1981 Cape Dory 28 for fresh coats of Petit Hydrocoat - my preferred ablative for the Chesapeake Bay. Thank you Petit for amazing paint products and Barnacle Boogie is kind of a banger: https://suno.com/song/d520ca69-02d0-4480-9ae7-a68950bc48a7?sh=lkXkbTHE25rg8G6K
No sailing this week so I cook homemade NYC style bagels on a sleepy Sunday in a mid century modern house. Everything - Plain - Poppy. This recipe has been producing some great results. These bagels are better than any I have personally eaten in the Washington DC area, and I think they go toe to toe with any New York City shop.
In this video I sail my 1981 Cape Dory 28 on the remnants of low pressure system Debby from Deale to Shady Side to check out the capsized wreckage of "Lovebug" - a 122' motor yacht built by Sanlorenzo in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard in 2010 that originally chartered at $125k/week. While the boat received a full refit in 2021, it began taking on water in the Chesapeake Bay in early August and the captain decided to settle the boat in 11' of water near the mouth of the Rhode River. Coincidentally I had docked near this boat during my last 2 trips to Annapolis this summer. This video takes place just days after seeing it last at a wedding at the Annapolis Yacht Club (where it was also docked). I originally targeted the last known coordinates on AIS, but the surge tide caused by tropical storm Debby seemed to pick up and move the LoveBug from its original resting place to slightly deeper water. High Seas, High Wind, Crab Pot in My Prop! Embark on a thrilling 2-day summer adventure on the Chesapeake Bay aboard my 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat, "Kukai," as we journey from Deale Maryland to Annapolis Maryland and back. Day 1 (25nm) : The trip kicks off with a struggle against 20-knot headwinds and 3-foot seas, turning our voyage into an 8-hour tacking marathon. Amidst this chaos, a moment of inattention leads to an unexpected encounter with a crab pot - oops. This required a 6:30 AM swim in the Chesapeake, as well as questionable use of a kitchen knife. But conditions ease and we make it to our destination relatively unscathed. Day 2 (18nm): Smooth sailing despite some morning-after wedding penance. Our return leg is a stark contrast, as we sail home with the support of a friendly wind and a confident sun, making for a serene conclusion to our voyage. In this video I rig up my sailing dinghy, and tow it to sea with my Cape Dory 28. Then, I learn to sail it in rough seas. This dinghy was included for free with my Cape Dory. Everything starts smoothly, but then the wind dies down, leaving me in a tricky situation drifting away from K?kai (oops)
I take you along for the ride as I cross the Chesapeake Bay on my 1981 Cape Dory 28 to tour scenic Tilghman Island on my road bike (on the 4th of July, 2024). The America trifecta! Great wind, a sun that defied forecast, and peaceful 4k footage of Tilghman Island - one of my favorite spots in the Eastern Shore.
Join me as I demonstrate the art of single-handing a medium sized sailboat (in this case a Cape Dory 28). I cover the basic single-handing safety systems, the docking process, running rigging configuration, and do some solo sailing in a confident wind (10-17kts in the forecast). Filmed on Osmo Action 4
A quick summer overnight trip on the Chesapeake Bay from Deale to Annapolis and back riding 100% downwind on my spruced up 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat named "Kukai". Rode a 10kt southerly there and a 15kt northerly back for a total trip length of just about 40nm averaging about 5kts the entire way. Close up 4k shots of the Woodwind II (wedding crashers), a walking tour of the city, surprise evening storm, broken whisker pole and more! Ultra satisfying jobs on my 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat. A lot of teak on this boat and I like to keep it natural which means one big scrub, brightening, and re-oil per year. I also applied new Kiwigrip non-skid to the top deck surface with some spectacular results. And bonus - the bilge mystery is finally solved
Knocking items off my to-do list for my 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat
~150 miles over 8 days & 7 nights in my new 1981 Cape Dory 28 sailboat. After selling my Catalina 27 in August I purchased this boat on the same day. 6 weekends of work & prep later, the boat (currently named Kukai) was ready for a maiden voyage to various spots across the Chesapeake Bay without a set itinerary (ended up being Deale - Saint Michael's - Wye River - Galesville - Rhode River - Hillsmere - Harness Creek - Tilghman Island - Lowes Wharf - Harris Creek and more). I wanted to make it to Annapolis but that was complicated by the power boat show & a strong northerly wind. But otherwise the trip was full of adventures like ceaseless fog, running aground, a new dinghy, and cruise ship chicken. This was my "creative misogi" of the year, with all footage shot in Dlog/Slog3 and edited + color graded w/ Davinci Resolve. All music improvised and recorded during the trip. I originally intended to write a EPs worth of music on this trip but it ended up being too much work (next time). Make sure to watch in 4k for optimal experience. Inaugural flight with the Air2S and first go @ color grading d-log footage in Premiere. The location is Burke Lake in Northern Virginia. Originally went to test out the drone and try for AM musky but the lake was frozen over enough to walk on.
Spent a couple days working my way through the Farmington River in Connecticut this past Christmas, fishing for rainbows & browns. Water was cold and the fish were sleepy. People were catching the occasional trout though - mostly on traditional patterns like zebra midge, olive buggers. Filmed on GoPro Hero 10 Music is "Away for Now" by David The Day
