Join us in Vancouver as we take on the big job of cleaning a Sea Ray Sundancer 310 cruiser. This beautiful boat had a lot of barnacles and mussels sticking to parts like the trim tabs, rudders, propellers, shafts, and struts. This happens often with power boats because these parts generally aren't painted with antifouling paint. We also found that the boat's through-hulls were mostly blocked, and the water intakes had growth in the intake ports. We had to clear these to make sure the boat can run smoothly. Another interesting thing we noticed is that the anodes on the starboard propeller shaft had more corrosion than the ones on the port propeller shaft. This could be because of a stray electrical current in the water, or even just dissimilar metals creating a saltwater circuit which causes marine electrolysis. The hull hosted a thin layer of algae slime, but no significant growth. Instead of scrubbing it off, we left it as is to protect the remaining ablative paint on the hull. Ablatives are almost like a layer of chalk on the hull which sea life has a tough time sticking on to when the boat is in motion. Filmed on a GoPro Hero 9 in Vancouver.

Join us in Vancouver as we clean a Grady White Freedom 285 sport cruiser. This boat had lots of sea life, like barnacles, mussels, and seaweed, sticking to its back parts. Our task was to get rid of all these without causing any harm to the boat. The boat's raw water intakes and its through-hulls were free of blockages, probably because the boat was hauled and painted only a few months ago. We didn't spot any zinc anodes, which are used to prevent corrosion due to electrolysis. Generally this means that a device called a galvanic isolator is in place to protect the boat's metals from decaying. While cleaning, we found only a thin layer of algae slime on the hull. Instead of scrubbing it all off, we decided to leave it. This is because the boat's hull has antifouling paint, which helps stop marine life from sticking to it. If we scrub too hard, this useful paint can get scrubbed off, too. At Yacht Butler Boat Care, we aim to clean boats well while still keeping them in good shape. We dove beneath the surface of Vancouver's False Creek to clean the hull of a cherished sailing classic, the Catalina 30 Wing Keel. Despite a recent haulout and painting, this yacht has begun to show signs of nature's relentless grasp, with an early veil of algae clinging to its hull. The sacrificial anodes, the silent protectors against corrosive elements, had a solid 85% of their life remaining. We understand the intricacies of maintaining a boat and its vital components like the ablative paint. This is designed to sluff away marine growth, helping to keep your boat in its prime condition. When dealing with ablatives we are careful to ensure our cleaning procedures do not contribute to wearing away this essential layer. It's better to leave a bit of algae growth in areas where paint is thin, rather than wear off the paint to the gelcoat. We revel in the challenge that each unique boat presents, adapting our cleaning approach to ensure the longevity and performance of your pride and joy. We were asked to clean up the waterline and the aft components of a beautiful Sea Ray 370. Unfortunately recent high temperatures have caused a "red tide", turning the seawater orange-brown and reducing underwater visibility to only 2 inches. No underwater footage was possible this day, and the entire cleaning had to be done by feel alone. It was almost two hours of scrubbing, as the sea flotsam stuck to the gelcoat and even took root as mossy growth, and there was heavy mussel and barnacle growth underneath on the trimtabs, rudders, propellers, shafts, and struts. Some of the clusters of mussels we pulled off were over 3 feet in diameter! We often see this type of waterline buildup when gelcoat ends up submerged or partially submerged. Most of the production boats have their waterlines designed for showroom conditions, not for real life use where the boat is loaded with gear or even fuel and water. In these cases we generally recommend that boat owners raise the waterline of their bottom paint during their next haulout. Filmed on a GoPro Hero 9 in Vancouver Canada

The Noon Ocean 34 sailboats were built in Vancouver in the 70's and 80's. With a heavy duty hull, an enclosed prop, and a full keel, these boats were made for serious cruising. Here we had the opportunity to help get this sailboat ready for the summer season by cleaning its hull and changing one of the anodes. Even though this Noon Ocean was painted with ablative paint, it had quite a lot of algae growth due to sitting over fall and winter. Nothing our sponges can't handle though! Here we look at the underside of a Bavaria 40 sailboat in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Bavaria yachts are famous for their elegance and style, and the underwater parts are no exception! The sleek lines of the hull make this boat an efficient long-distance cruiser, with the long fin keel and spade rudder working to provide a perfect counter to the large sail plan above water. Sitting in False Creek over the winter, this particular vessel is in need of a hull cleaning but is otherwise in great health. Every waterway seems to have a different blend of sea life which flourishes on the local boats. In the case of False Creek Vancouver, we commonly see the algae featured in this video. It probably has a fancy scientific name but for obvious reasons we call it False Creek Floss. Although it comes off a boat with very little effort, this stuff very quickly grows like a thick beard over every underwater surface. Most algae likes sunlight but in this case the strong currents of False Creek are what Floss thrives in. Shot with a Chasing M2 Submersible Drone in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This classic Hunter 30 is used by a long-time sailor and sailing instructor, and was in need of a good cleaning. Take a look at the before and after cleaning the hull, prop, rudder, and drive shaft... it's definitely a huge improvement! The three big factors that influence growth on a boat hull are sunlight, current, and time. In British Columbia the ocean is rich with microscopic marine life that is always looking to cling to surfaces and establish colonies. Most boaters in the Pacific Northwest are aware of this and clean their hulls regularly, but even with a year between cleanings a lot of marine life can build up on a boat. In this case the owner had the hull cleaned only 9-10 months before he asked us to take care of his boat. You can see that even with this period of time a variety of growth has thrived. Believe it or not if he waited until the end of spring there would have been three times as much life on this sailboat. Another happy client ready to head into the wind! Before and after footage of the hull of a an Ontario 32 foot sailboat in the Salish Sea, British Columbia. This boat had sat for a year since it's last bottom cleaning. The growth was moderate, probably because it fits pretty snugly in it's slip. Generally the worst growth is on hulls that get more sunlight, so this one was fairly protected. That said, the slip gets quite a lot of current so most of the growth was along the current-facing edges... and boy was it stuck on there good! The owner of this vessel also asked us to retrieve some lost items he had dropped under his boat. The diver found his lost dorade cowl, but weren't able to locate a pry bar which probably sunk into the ooze which coats the ocean floor. No pry bar, but the diver did find some other interesting things... Filmed in Canada on a GoPro Hero 9 in Nanaimo, British Columbia

This underwater drone inspection was conducted with a Chasing M2 submersible, requested by the owner to assess the underwater condition prior to selling. The boathouse is located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and features two 30 foot boat slips in one building along with a fully furnished suite on the top floor. It features a rare otter-deterring barrier in one of the slips, designed to prevent otters from entering the boathouse and fouling the boat and docks inside. This barrier also serves to protect the underside of a boat from growth, as it limits current and sunlight the two biggest factors for fostering sea life. Overall the underwater portion of the boathouse was found to be in excellent condition, with all of the heavy-duty styrofoam floats being intact with only moderate growth. Also all load-bearing sections of the structure were reinforced with sealed air-filled 55-gallon drums, also with only moderate growth. Gratitude is a one-of-kind sailing yacht, extremely well updated for efficiency and comfort. This strong blue water boat is fast, comfortable, and easy to sail. This 2004 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 494 is ready for adventures near and far. In this underwater drone inspection video, we look at the hull and deep bulb-ended keel, along with the propeller, zincs, shaft, and rudder. All-in-all this is one of the cleanest boats we've inspected, with the only recommendation being a scrub of the keel-cooling elements which are unpainted and thus will be prone to periodic growth. Aside from removing a few mussels, this yacht is in pristine condition and is ready for a full year of cruising maintenance free. This yacht is for sale! The list of updates, upgrades, and recent maintenance is extensive - making this a wonderfully efficient getaway yacht, providing a comfortable off-grid living space in any anchorage.
