Seven years into boatlife, I sometimes look back at the naive girl I was when we first stepped on board ForTuna, unsure whether I envy her optimism or feel grateful to be a seasoned liveaboard now. She definitely didn’t expect these five things: 1. How much mental energy small decisions take. Weather, anchorages, groceries, maintenance, nothing is big on its own, but everything needs attention. 2. How quickly “adventure” turns into routine. And how necessary that routine becomes if you want to stay. 3. How comforting familiarity feels. Knowing one anchorage well can feel richer than constantly moving on. 4. How little the big moments matter compared to the small ones. It’s not the passages you remember most, but the everyday rhythms. 5. How boatlife doesn’t become easier, you just learn what actually matters. Stay Salty, Greta and Michael #sailing #sailinglife #liveaboard #sailingadventure #liveaboardlife
still unbelievably grateful that the weather and waves were kind to us #sailing #sailinglife #liveaboard #sailboatlife #sailingadventure
Many sailors come to boatlife trying to stretch the feeling of a sailing holiday and for a while, that works. Everything feels new. Every anchorage feels special. Every passage feels like an achievement. But eventually, the everyday parts take over. The grocery runs in unfamiliar places. The maintenance that never fully ends. The weather deciding for you. The nights that are less calm than you hoped for. This is usually the moment when people think something went wrong. In reality, this is simply the moment when boatlife stops being a trip and starts being a life. Living aboard long-term isn’t about extending adventure. It’s about finding ways to live well on normal days, the quiet ones, the repetitive ones, the days that don’t make it into photos. Boatlife lasts when you stop measuring it by highlights and start paying attention to how it feels over time. If you’re interested in that version of boatlife, the one that’s honest, imperfect, and sustainable, then you are in the right place. Stay Salty, Greta and Michael soon back on ForTuna ⛵️ #sailing #sailinglife #boatlife⚓️ #liveaboard #sailingadventure
After living on a sailboat for 7 years and meeting hundreds of liveaboards along the way, we are confident to have the answer: Most people think sailors quit living aboard because of storms, long passages, or rough seas. That’s rarely the reason. What actually wears people down are the small things, every single day. The constant decision-making. The boat jobs that never really end. Plans changed by weather. The mental load of always adapting. Boatlife doesn’t fail because it’s too hard. It fails when it’s treated like an escape instead of a life that needs structure, recovery, and honesty. Living aboard is sustainable when you allow yourself to slow down, stay longer, dislike it sometimes, and rest when you need to. We wrote a long reflection about what really makes boatlife last, and why stepping back can be part of staying. The full blog post is on our website (link in bio) if you want an honest review of Boatlife. Stay Salty, Greta and Michael video kindy made by wineglasses from location: Zambezi in NYC

After sailing over 20,000 nm on our monohull ForTuna and 7,000 nm on the catamaran Zambezi, we’re finally ready to share our honest opinion on the never-ending Catamaran vs Monohull debate. For this review, we compared both boats in 4 key aspects: 1️⃣ Sailing performance on long passages A tie. The cat is faster, but needs way more wind to move. Moreover when sailing close-hauled, the main dominates and maneuvering in higher winds often requires the engine’s help. 2️⃣ Sailing comfort This one surprised us. Catamarans are shockingly uncomfortable once the sea starts moving. Each wave hits twice, the hulls slam, the rig creaks, and our bodies couldn’t predict the motion. On a monohull, the movement is linear, predictable and our stomachs are much happier. 3️⃣ Living comfort The cat wins. The space, light, and “upper-level living” are unbeatable. But you’ll also find it hard to hide from the sun. 4️⃣ Maintenance Another tie. Double the hulls, double the engines, double the systems. Whatever you spend or fix on a monohull, double it for a catamaran. That said, redundancy can be a plus offshore. Our verdict: We’re staying on a monohull. The living space of a catamaran is tempting, but the sailing comfort just isn’t for us. We plan to keep crossing oceans and we’d rather live smaller than be seasick. What’s your take on the cat vs mono debate? Stay salty, Greta & Michael 🌊 #sailing #sailboat #boatlife⚓️ #liveaboard #sailboatlife #sailingadventure
Sure, sometimes we swap the pine trees 🌲 for palm trees 🌴 but I don’t think that’s what they meant 😉 For all those who do believe this is how every morning should look like, welcome to boatlife ⛵️ we are Greta and Michael and our mornings look like this since 2019 🌅 over the years our mission has become to help as many people as possible to take the leap 🌊 we write guides (see link in bio), invite sailors on board to try out boatlife, hop on phone calls to answer your questions and keep posting on this platform to share the love ⛵️ What do you think? should mornings look like this? to many more salty mornings 🌊 Greta and Michael #sailing #liveaboard #sailingadventure #sailinglife #boatlife⚓️

⚓ We still shout at each other when we drop anchor and then act like nothing happened afterwards 😆 ⛵ I (Greta) still question if the boat will actually turn back upright when we start heeling 🍜 Sometimes offshore “dinners” are just cup noodles and that is totally fine 🛠️ We have clear job assignments that have not really changed in the last 7 years 🧽 We procrastinate when it comes to scrubbing the hull 🌊 We still have a lot to learn. Sailing is not something you can fully master in a classroom. Some lessons only come from being out there in the elements. Here is to embracing the quirks, the learning curves and the messy bits of life at sea. That is what makes the journey ours 💙 If you are dreaming about boatlife or curious about what it really takes to sail offshore, scroll to our link in bio. You will find resources, tips and a glimpse into the reality of living on the water so you can start charting your own course.
