Go with the flow and enjoy the mindfulness only the brainless can deliver: Here's one hour of wild Pacific Coast jellyfishes swimming, filmed from Monterey Bay to Alaska by ya buoy underwaterpat. This next paragraph is here for YouTube's keywording around relaxation videos, so bear with me. I made this one to help with election stress and provide a chill vibe similar to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Jellyfish Sea Nettle Cam, except with their wild counterparts swimming in the open ocean. Slap this sucker up as a video wallpaper to decorate your productivity life as we endlessly circle the drain of creative burnout while finding something to fill the void and help us relax the mind while we study, work, and try to sleep through the modern scyphozoan bellscape. Featured in this video are 00:00 Pacific moon jellyfish (Aurelia labiata) 09:39 Brown sea nettles (Chrysaora fuscescens) 20:11 Purple-striped sea nettles (Chrysaora colorata) 33:58 Northern sea nettle (Chrysaora melanaster) 35:23 Egg-yolk jellyfish (Phacellophora camtschatica) 45:55 Pacific lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea ferruginea) (Note that it does not feature Aurelia aurita nor Cyanea capillata for tho they are included here for craven search optimizocean reasons, those are Atlantic species, and there is some taxonomic confusion over what species is what. These jellyfish were all filmed from Monterey Bay, California to South East Alaska via British Columbia.) These are all (save one at the end!) Scyphozoan medusae in the phylum Cnidaria. I call them jellyfish because that's what people know them as, though there are many different types of gelatinous zooplankton that are *not* jellyfish as these are. They're not fish, yes, but "sea jellies" then includes siphonophores, salps, pteropods, larvaceans... It's not more precise, and people know the bloop bloop as "jellyfish" so that's what I'm using. ___ Make shore to like and sub-scribe and comment for the algal rhythm! Dive into the anchovy mayhem that has been the Monterey Bay the last many months! A bajillion million sea lions, pelicans, gulls, seals (and off shore, the hordes of humpback whales) have all come in to feast on the infinite schools. In their wake, the anchovies have left a lot of poop that seems to be creating an anoxic zone, resulting in quite a few stressed out, passed out fishes-including a rare prickleback species that became a first on iNaturalist! Enjoy this dive filled with octopuses, starfish, crabs, shrimp, eel grass, nudibranchs and more-Del Monte Beach is an amazing dive site and the wharf is without pier for critter coolness! When seaside curiosity begs for a deeper dive, beware the Seasyphian itch that comes with scratching beneath the surface: ? - ! - ? ? Please enjoy my silly little skit filmed and edited in 36 hours during the 2024 Backscatter Monterey Shootout photo video contest. This underwater photography contest is the highlight of my year every time that it has run, and after a five year hiatus, I'm thrilled that it's back bay-be!! I'm stoked that this submission was given an honorable mention in the video montage category-as long as the video gets played in the auditorium to all the contestants, I feel like I've won the whole shaboodle. It's been six years since Monterey Bay last had a *documented* sunflower starfish sighting, but recently, rumors have spread of a few Pycnopodia helianthoides bb's recruiting to Oregonian reefs and even here in my California backyard. So last week we went for a midnight dive at the Breakwater to see about finding us a Seasquatch.... Spoiler: None were found, but we did have a bioluminescent plankton bloom, sailfin sculpins, bocaccio rockfish, heart crabs, umbrella crabs, a teeeeeeeny tiny octopus, and a thornback ray! Always a good time divingThanks to everyone who showed up! More Pycno patrols to come!! Ain't nothing better for the Kelp Kultists than a perfect viz SCUBA dive at good ol' Monterey Breakwater. The subtidal playing field just offshore of San Carlos Beach at the end of Cannery Row is the perhaps THE most-dove site in all of California-countless dive careers have been launched through the Coastguard Jetty's kelp forests and magical reefs. And though some may poopoo the Breakwater for its ease of access, when conditions are good, it has some of the best diving in all of Monterey Bay, from the menagerie of nudibranchs, diversity of fish assemblages, charismatic megafauna in seals, sea lions and sea otters-and of course, the kelp kathedrals themselves. Today was just such a day, and with glorious gelatinous goober beings to boot! Jellyfish fans, drift this way! Thanks all for your patience with the upload schedule here you all-been working through lots of technical and creative difficulties. The audio in this episode couldn't be healed like the other two, so hopefully it's not too harsh and abrasive. We've got a fix for future eps! Much love to you all fronds and anemones, I hope to be seaing you again very soon here on the feed! Best starfishes, Pat ___ Make shore to like and sub-scribe and comment for the algal rhythm! Whale hey there fronds and anemones! T'was an eggstraordinary dive that day last September at Monastery Beach-join ya buoy underwaterpat for a shellebrocean of a dive with egg yolk jellies in Monterey Bay! Monastery Beach has some of the best shore diving in all of California, thanks to a finger of the Carmel Canyon (an offshoot of the Monterey Submarine Canyon further offshore) that funnels ocean swell and deep water directly to this infamous stretch of coast. 100 yards from shore, a SCUBA diver finds themselves just beyond a wash rock surrounded by an algal amphitheater that I like to call "The Kelp Kathedral". Nestled in its pews are schools of blue rockfish, awesome anemones, colorful critters-and sometimes, glorious gelatinous drifters like these egg yolk jellyfishes (Phacellophora camtschatica) caught up in the current events of that year. This was one of my favroite dives of last year, and I'm so thrilled to be sharing it with you all now! Heads up-Monastery has a reputation, and for good reason. It's a powerful beach, and not to be taken lightly. I can't tell you what's right for you but, I live 15 minutes away, so I can pick my days and I don't ever feel a need to commit to anything sketchy with that beach. I can always come back. Be careful, seek training, be honest with yourself, practice your skills, don't test your luck, and respect the ocean, always-and when the time is right, may Monastery be as giving to you as it has been to me for the last 15 years. Whale hey there fronds and anemones, it's ya buoy @underwaterpat! Good to sea you here. This here is the first episode of The Dive Vlog, a thorough overcomplication of my favorite thing in the world: Diving and underwater photographing in the kelp forests of Monterey Bay, California. Having just quit my job at the Monterey Bay Aquarium earlier in the year to pursue my underwater photography career in earnest, I ventured out at San Carlos Beach in Monterey with a few GoPros, hefty credit card bills and a dream. It's taken me some time to get the emotional bandwidth necessary to get to the editing, but I'm planning to have these episodes come out every couple weeks here. Winter in Monterey Bay brings some of its best conditions-well, at least in terms of visibility! With 2021's nonstop mega-swells and the early evening darkness, the underwater photographer must jump at any window in the forecast to get their gills wet. Check out the cool critters I saw on a calm night dive between the storms at the Monterey Breakwater this weekend! Of Note: Red octopuses have been common this year, especially at night. Whiskers the famous harbor seal is back after a long hiatus! Tritonia exulans nudibranch sea slugs are around and cruising the sea pen beds. Market squid are inshore and breeding! Moon jellies and salps represented the planktonic community very well. Many kelp holdfasts have been ripped out by the sell and are lumbering around the breakwater eddie. What a great night! This past weekend was as good as it gets in the kelp forests of Monterey Bay-ocean sunfish (Mola mola) patrolling the dropoffs, rockfish schools lazily hiding among the columns of the kelp cathedral, millions of pyrosomes washing up with the currents among the other jellies; and all of it bathed in the clear jade-blue waters of coastal California at its best. With everything going on in the world, I figured I'd throw together a long-form video of the highlights. There's no music, just me breathing-though, as a photographer, I'm using my breathing as buoyancy, so it may or may not be very relaxing. If it is, great! If not, mute this video and play some more fitting music alongside. Enjoy! Subscribe!
