We give our stanard candid boat maintenance approach to repairing and prepping the hull and keel. As ever suffer some minor setbacks, including much trial and error. As ever we are learning as we go and are 100% open to your feedback on our attempted work. Key include sanding down the antifoul paint and rust on the keel using various tools such as a DA (dual-action) sander, an angle grinder, and use rust converter chemicals for the first time. In our own way we stress the importance of precision measuring in aligning the mast base to the deck, while joking about our own mistakes and slow pacing across months of work. Despite the challenges and messiness, we offer an exploration of routine boat maintenance tasks and honest reflections on DIY efforts. Happy new year all. Never one to copy and be a sheep, but I have copied and I am a sheep. New Years day saw me dig out the running shoes and go trueing around the streets, all with one thing in mind. Get boat fit!! Now boat fit I have always said is different to being fit for a boat, or indeed being fit. What am I on about??!! I thin I am saying you can be boat fit, which is being at one with the boat and being able to get around with ease because you become used to your surrounds and being at sea, even if you are technically unfit. Then there is what I am trying to do which is get fitter to allow me to carry off better manoeuvres and not to be so exhausted after each. I am not fitness guru. DO NOT listen to anything I say with regards fitness. In short this video is the start of my attempt to loose weight, and get fitter for the double handed sailing escapades that are to come this year and after. Will I manage to shed an ounce of weight? Will I be able to run any further than the end of the road? Who the hell knows. What this video is not, is a fitness video. It is not the start of something differenent. Boats will return in their normal format in the next video. I have forgotten how much I like to talk absolute twiddle in these bits. It is much fun. I think I would like to go off at a random canter pace now, about British politics, social unfairness and pigmentation of Cornish seaweed. I won't though. Double handed yacht racing on Mist! Now on the return leg of the Junior Offshore Group (JOG) race, Cowes/Lymington race. What started in light winds, the wind picked up and knocked us for six, then disappeared again. Too much strategy and thinking required, my brain was going to explode.And then the physicality of short tacking up the shore to keep out of the tide. The episode starts as did our race, with a protest 20 seconds before the start. We felt that we were in the right and did not see any visibility of a protest flag, so we carried on. I've always know tha Lake sailing in yachts was a thing outside of the UK, but never really appreciated it happened here. On the way to a family holiday I was googling to see if any water time fun could be had, and stumbled across a charter company a short drive from where we were staying in Windermere. A quickchat upon arrival, the family were up for it, and one short call later we were booked for the day. After having explored the lake in this way, and we only managed half of it. I'd have to say that there is no better way to take in the sights. We discover the joy of cruising Mist, and introducing newcomers to sailing. We were invited to join the Garmin corporate day out and host some of their employees onboard Mist. The aim of the day was to allow members of their many staff from many departments, to sample our wonderful world of sailing. After collecting our crew from Ocean Village, Southampton (UK) we set off to The Solent, in search of wind. Eventually finding some we hoisted the headsail for a short sail, before swapping crew after lunch. The next batch of intrepid newbies got a better introduction, with more than 20 knots of wind, and they revelled in the challenge. Our quest towards The Fastnet 2025 continues! In this episode we undertake our longest race ever on Mist. The Junior Offshore Group's (JOG) race weekend consisting of a course from Cowes to the Easterm Solent, turning around, passing Cowes and finishing at Yarmouth in the Deep Western Solent on day 1 was an exciting ride culminating in a long downwind spinnaker ride along the mainland shore. We were placing well until the spinnaker halyard was snagged when we went to drop on a tight reach, seeing us scoot off downwind and having to beat against a rapid ebbing tide to the leeward mark. Such is life. Our video sees us undertake the return race from Yarmouth back to Cowes, with a short hitch out of the Central Solent before another spinnaker finish. Two things to be taken from this trip: 1) We do not understand our sail wardrobe and what works best for Mist 2) We need a better microphone to cope with noise reduction in a breeze.
