Ever fancied running away to sea? ??? Hi! I'm Georgie, a deckhand on the Götheborg of Sweden, and I'll be taking over the socials this month to share a little about the history, culture and skillset that makes the Götheborg what it is. Sailing on this ship and helping maintain her has been a dream come true for me since 2022 and I am so excited to share a little of life behind the scenes on this beautiful ship ?? #gotheborgofsweden #gothenburg #tallship #sailing #sailor #sweden #europe #ships
During Gothenburg Boat Show in February, we met Martin and Mathias Ravanis, the two ship builders who built our ship boats. We had to make a short interview with them!

In an article published Monday 29th of May 2023 on our website www.gotheborg.se (https://www.gotheborg.se/news/meet-the-owner/), the owner of Greencarrier Group, Stefan Björk, shares his personal motivations behind acquiring the Götheborg - a business decision made by the heart. With candor, he discusses the inherent challenges and remarkable advantages of owning the world's largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship. He also opens up about why he welcomes and encourages other companies and partners to join the him and Greencarrier on the extraordinary journey and adventure that is Götheborg. In this short video he also develops his thoughts about the ship.
Sailing leg 11 in 2022 went from Monaco instead of Nice (as a surprise stopover in Monaco was added to the expedition). The 6th of October 2022 the ship departed after gorgeous days in Nice and Monaco and headed for Valletta, Malta. It was a fantastic sailing leg with sunshine and rain, amazing views of Stromboli, and time for both a swimstop and games on board, before arriving to beautiful historical Malta. It was the first time the ship visited Malta, and we had a great stopover! Get a glimpse of life on board and enjoy! Video and editing: Joel Engberg Footage of Stromboli: Maximillian Nichols
The video for Leg 9 of 2022 has arrived! Take a sneak peek into the daily life onboard during this 6-day voyage from Lisbon to Malaga. We left Lisbon the 9th of September to start our journey to Malaga. On our way, we passed Cadiz, where the original Götheborg and her fellow East Indiamen used to cast anchor to trade Swedish ship building materials such as wood, tar, and iron in exchange for silver, which the Chinese traders wanted as payment for the tea, silk, china ware. Just after Cadiz, Götheborg entered the Mediterranean from the west for the very first time. We sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar, which is a must-do for many sailors. We enjoyed six days of authentic sailing, and even spotted dolphins before slowly cruising into the sun-drenched harbor of Malaga. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are you interested in joining us for our sailing adventures this year? This is the video from leg 10, Malaga - Nice, 19 September - 2 October 2022 with 9 days of sailing. Shouldn't an expedition like ours visit France? Of course! We saved our French stop for the Mediterranean, leaving Malaga 20 September with all sails set for the French Riviera. Fifteen years ago, Götheborg visited Nice for the first time, on the way back from Asia. The turquoise water, the sun and the dolphins all contributed to making this leg spectacular. Finally! The long-awaited video from our sailing adventure across the Bay of Biscay last year has arrived. Take a peek into the daily life onboard during the 15-day voyage. Our journey started on August 20th, when we set sail from Bremerhaven Maritime Days. After navigating the Bay of Biscay, we reached the stunning city of Lisbon on September 5th. While the Bay of Biscay is known for its sometimes challenging sailing conditions, we had mainly sunny and calm weather. At the start of the sailing leg we had some really great sailing, and during the following calmer days the crew had an amazing time on board watching whales, making a swim stop, and enjoying some onboard games and activities. This is a beautiful and perfect summary, like a short documentary, that distilles what sailing on board the Götheborg is all about. The breathtaking scenery, the ocean, the hard work, the adventure, the comradeship and the great people on board. The amazing ship Götheborg; creaking, swaying, sailing - all craftmanship, manual work and rugged beauty. Quiet days on board, games and play, storms and broken sails. It finishes with the impressive arrival to London, sailing under Tower Bridge. This video is from sailing leg six on the Asia Expedition 2022/2023. Leaving Oslo 30 July 2022 and arriving in London 8 August 2022. It was a sailing leg with some challenging seas and wind, but also warm and calm days with time for a swim stop. In this video you meet several members of our crew. Watch Leader Assistant Hanna Lönnqvist and Sailmakers Aurélien Gazeau are interviewed. You also meet our Captain Torben Hildemar, Chief Officer Mats Larsson, Second Officer Jakob Tilander, Bosun Marie-Louise Edholm, Watch Leader Dave Farrall, Carpenter Quirin Horn and several of the wonderful deckhands that sailed with us on this sailing leg. Sailing Leg 5 of the great Asia Expedition 2022/2023, named The City Hopper, went between two Scandinavian Capitals - Copenhagen to Oslo. We left Copenhagen 23 July 2022, and arrived in Oslo 30 July 2022. On board during the sailing leg, we had an amazing drone pilot, Christoffer Nilsson. We were hoping for full sails, but the weather had different plans. The footage from the sailing leg is still awesome, so have a look at this video for some great drone footage. It includes some pretty unique video shots with people working up in the rig and with the sails. Follow the sailing leg from start to finish in this video.
