After months in the marina, it’s finally time to start getting SV Impavidus ready for sea again. In this episode we refit the sails, re-thread the running rigging, sort out the German mainsheet system and begin preparing the boat for life back under sail here in the Mediterranean. We also take a look at the new hatch sunshades we’ve had made locally in Tunisia — although getting them finished turned into a bit of a saga! Then later, we head into the bustling Saturday souk in Monastir where the fresh local produce, incredible colours and unbelievably low prices remind us why we enjoy life here so much. Fresh food, real cruising life, sunshine and boat jobs aboard SV Impavidus. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. This week Impavidus comes out of the water for the usual haul-out jobs — cleaning back the Coppercoat, polishing the topsides and checking everything underneath the boat. But while inspecting the underwater gear, we discovered something that genuinely surprised me. One set of anodes was disappearing far faster than expected… and the reason turned out to be something I suspect many saildrive and shaft-drive owners may never even have considered. In this video we look at: ⚓ Saildrive and propeller anodes ⚓ Zinc vs aluminium anodes ⚓ Rope cutters and electrical continuity ⚓ Galvanic corrosion explained simply ⚓ Why some anodes disappear much faster than others ⚓ The importance of electrically isolated propellers We also explain how certain rope cutter and shaft arrangements can unintentionally create an electrical path between underwater components, dramatically changing how the protection system behaves. Installing a wireless remote control on our Bavaria 37 anchor windlass sounded simple… until we started digging into the wiring! In this video we install and test a WINCHMAX wireless windlass remote system so we can control the anchor from anywhere on board. We explain how the contactor system works, how the wiring is arranged, and how the remote interfaces with the existing deck switches and helm controls. We also cover: ⚓ How anchor windlass control systems actually work ⚓ Contactor wiring explained simply ⚓ Safety considerations when installing a wireless remote ⚓ Real-world testing aboard SV Impavidus ⚓ Why this might be one of the best upgrades for short-handed sailing The ability to raise or lower the anchor while standing at the bow — or even elsewhere on the boat — completely changes anchoring and docking flexibility. I thought this would be a straightforward job… swap out the old freshwater pump and fit a new one. It wasn’t. The new pump looked identical, but the quick-fit connectors were just slightly different — enough that nothing would fit. So instead of a simple replacement, this turned into something else entirely… A proper “Franken pump” build using parts from both the old and new units. Along the way, I also explain: • How a boat’s pressurised water system works • How multi-diaphragm pumps actually move water • Why small differences in fittings can cause big problems If you’re working on your own boat systems, this one might save you a bit of head scratching. 👍 If you found it useful, give it a like — it really helps the channel 🔔 And subscribe if you want to follow along with more real-world boat fixes Support the channel / early ad-free access: 👉 https://www.patreon.com/svimpavidus #boatmaintenance #boatrepair #liveaboard #sailinglife #diyboat Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. If your outboard won’t start, won’t idle, or just refuses to run properly… there’s a good chance the carburettor is the problem. In this video, I take you step-by-step through replacing the carburettor on a Tohatsu 3.5HP 4-stroke outboard, including removing the old unit, fitting a new one, and explaining why modern carbs are often easier to replace than repair. Modern carburettors are effectively tamper-proof—tiny jets, sealed components, and emissions restrictions mean even a small amount of dirt can stop your engine running, and cleaning them isn’t always practical. In many cases, replacement is simply quicker, cheaper, and more reliable. ⸻ 🔧 What’s covered: * Removing the fuel tank and accessing the carb * Disconnecting fuel lines and linkages * Fitting a new carburettor * Replacing the fuel hose and adding an inline filter * Why modern carbs are difficult (or impossible) to clean * How a carburettor works (simple explanation) Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. Hi folks, This video is a bit of a practical one — I’ve just unpacked a 26kg suitcase full of boat parts that I’ve brought back into Tunisia, and I go through it all item by item. It’s not just a list of what I bought, but what each piece is for, why I chose it, and how much I paid. I’ve also included screenshots of where everything came from, along with a few tips on how to save money by sourcing things from the right places before you travel. There are quite a few little tricks in there that can make a big difference when you’re trying to keep costs down while keeping the boat properly maintained. As always, I’ve declared everything properly and show you the paperwork side of it as well, so you can see how that works in practice here in Tunisia Enjoy the video. This week we follow Ryan on one of his final marine projects — a custom-built fishing module for a Rodman 31. The brief was simple: create a practical, durable solution for serious fishing. The result is a bespoke unit incorporating a live well, sink with running water, and dedicated tackle storage — all designed to fit neatly within the boat’s existing layout, replacing a clever C-shaped settee that lifts clear of the outboards. We join the build from start to finish, from workshop fabrication through to final installation at Birdham Pool, with a look around the boatyard and some of the other projects Ryan has been involved in. It’s a great example of practical marine engineering, thoughtful design, and skilled fabrication — and a fitting send-off as Ryan steps away from the marine industry.Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. Roxanne’s GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/after-25-surgeries-im-still-fighting-to-be-here-for-my-son As many of you know, we don’t normally use the SV Impavidas page for personal family matters. We keep this page for our YouTube channel, our sailing life, and all the usual chaos that comes with it. (Other than the amazing artwork our daughter Roxie does when she is well enough to) But today, we’re making an exception....... We are back in the UK and to support our daughter, Roxanne, after devastating news yesterday. She has been through years of serious health problems, repeated surgeries, pain, infection, and being passed from pillar to post. She has now finally seen a private specialist who has confirmed that she needs urgent surgery. Although she has now been added to an NHS waiting list, the timescale she has been given is far too long for her situation. She needs help much sooner than that. We know how frightening and frustrating that feels. We went through our own version of it when I needed a heart valve replacement and had to seek private treatment abroad because waiting was simply too dangerous. Roxanne is now trying to raise £8,000 for the surgery she urgently needs. This won’t solve everything overnight, but it will be the first proper step towards recovery and towards getting her life back. Most importantly, it will give her a chance to be more present for her young son, who needs his mum. We know that many people are under pressure financially, and we completely understand that not everyone can donate. But even sharing her post could make a real difference. So today, as parents, we’re asking our followers to please read Roxanne’s story and, if you can, share it.Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. The Mediterranean remains one of the most remarkable cruising grounds in the world — but in 2026, the reality of staying there has changed. In this episode, we take a clear and measured look at what it actually takes to live, cruise, or overwinter in the Med today. We cover: • The 90 / 180 Schengen rule explained clearly • What residency really costs — and what income you’ll need • Marina availability and pricing pressures • The growth of charter fleets • Anchoring restrictions and managed mooring fields • Practical strategies that genuinely work This is not a doom-and-gloom video. Nor is it a romanticised version of cruising life. It’s simply an informed assessment of the current landscape — so you can plan properly, budget realistically, and make decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. If you’re considering sailing to the Mediterranean — or already there — this is essential viewing. In this video we break down the real annual cost of cruising on our sailboat, based on our own experience living aboard in the Mediterranean for 9 years. There’s a lot of talk online about “cheap” or “expensive” boat life, but very little real-world detail. So we’ve put together our actual yearly cruising budget, including fuel, marinas, communications, consumables, and the many hidden costs people don’t always mention. Our typical annual cruising cost comes to around €5,300 per year, but that number can vary depending on where you cruise, how often you use marinas, and how much work you do yourself. In this video we also look at: • Marina costs around the Mediterranean • Fuel prices in different countries • Food cost comparisons • Insurance requirements • Cruising taxes and hidden fees • Residency and visa considerations This is not a dream-world estimate—this is a real cruiser’s budget. Our typical annual costs include: • Winter marina • Fuel and water • Consumables and maintenance • Communications and apps • Safety gear • Check-in fees and cruising taxes Total annual cost: about €5,300 ⸻ If you’re thinking about buying a boat, retiring aboard, or cruising the Med, this should give you a realistic starting point. In this video I explain why saloon window leaks on the Bavaria 37 Cruiser (Farr design) are not simply a sealing failure, but a predictable result of thermal expansion mismatch and constrained movement. Large smoke-grey acrylic windows absorb far more solar energy than the surrounding white GRP coachroof. Under normal day–night conditions this produces several millimetres of differential movement across a 2.3 m window span. Traditional mastic or polyurethane bonding systems are too rigid to accommodate this repeated shear and peel loading and will inevitably fatigue and fail. Drawing on façade engineering principles, I break down: • how thermal expansion and solar loading actually affect acrylic and GRP • why mastic-only bonding has a limited service life • how compliant bonding using 3M VHB structural tape accommodates movement • why a low-modulus silicone edge seal is better suited for weatherproofing • and how external solar shading can significantly reduce thermal stress This approach aligns the glazing detail with the real mechanical and thermal behaviour of the materials, resulting in a far more durable solution. If you’re dealing with recurring window leaks, surveying one of these boats, or planning a long-term fix, this explanation is based on engineering fundamentals — not trial and error. 00:00 Introduction 02:40 “I Can’t Stand the Rain Against My Windows” 05:30 Thermal expansion explained Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ Perspex supplier: https://wholesalepos.com/search/results,1-24?keyword=Cast+Acrylic+&x=13&y=15&limitstart=0&option=com_virtuemart&view=category&virtuemart_category_id=0&Itemid=346 =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. In Part 2 of this series, we focus on galley and cooking fires, including pan fires, gas systems, and whether induction cooking is a safer alternative for boats. In this video, you’ll learn: What pan fires are, how they start, and why they escalate so fast Why you should NEVER use water on a pan fire The correct response to a galley fire using lids, fire blankets, and extinguishers Why fire blankets are essential equipment on every boat Common galley fire risks most boat owners overlook The real risks of LPG / propane gas on boats Why gas leaks are especially dangerous in marine environments Gas safety essentials: lockers, solenoids, detectors, and hose inspections The pros and cons of induction cooking on boats Why induction reduces fire risk — but only if the electrical system is designed correctly Cooking fires don’t give second chances. Knowing how to react in the first few seconds can mean the difference between a minor incident and abandoning ship. ⚠️ Disclaimer This video is for educational purposes only. PART 1 Boat Fires Part 1: Electrical Fires, Causes & Fire Extinguishers Explained Fire is one of the most dangerous emergencies you can face on a boat — and the number one cause of boat fires is electrical failure. In confined spaces, surrounded by fuel and batteries, a small electrical fault can turn catastrophic in minutes. In Part 1 of this series, we focus on why boat fires happen, the types of fires you can encounter, and the critical role electrical systems play in onboard fire risk. In this video, you’ll learn: Why boat fires are far more dangerous than fires on land The main causes of boat fires, with a focus on electrical faults The different classes of fire found on boats (A, B, C, and K/F) Which fire extinguishers belong on a boat — and their limitations Why electrical fires usually start with heat, not sparks How bad electrical joints, undersized wiring, and poor crimps start fires The importance of proper fuse sizing and why fuses protect wires, not appliances The real fire risks of large battery banks, lithium systems, and inverters How to reduce risk with proper battery protection, cable security, and terminal protection Most electrical fires start small — hidden behind panels, under bunks, or inside lockers — and escalate fast. Understanding how and why they start is your first line of defence. ⚠️ Disclaimer This video is for educational purposes only. In this video Jack and Ryan put a large boat onto a trailer. The boat has been sat on blocking for some time and has recently been sold to a customer in Portsmouth. The sale included delivery and so Jack uses one of his big trailers to move the the big boat to the marina. But first it has to be put on the trailer without the use of a hoist or crane.
