Desiderata is a 1968 Ericson 30'. Shes been a handful for me since I purchased her but then again what boat isn't. I spent most the summer just getting her back to the seaworthy state she needed to be in to make the five-day journey north to Eureka CA. from Oakland CA. I broke down multiple times before I made it out of the Golden Gate plus multiple times while underway. Luckily I was able to fix the motor problems in Fort Bragg CA. Made it to Eureka where I hauled her out to install, whelp you will see in the video:) Thanks so much to everyone who supported Desiderata and myself in the trip. We couldn't have done it without you. Also, thanks much One Sol and Stickfigure and others for letting me use some great tunes. Gotta have the best tunes to sail to:) These videos are for family and friends to enjoy and are not for making a profit.
Desiderata and I were in a battle not only with each other but with the clock. She had already stressed me out multiple times trying to just get out under the Golden Gate, but this time she knew we were heading further north around Cape Mendocino so she knew I needed to give her more attention even yet. Sure glad I did. A huge thank you to Noyo Harbor where I was able to secure a slip to work on her and let her rest while I was 5 hours away working. This boat has taught me allot of patience Thats for sure. I am hoping to get some photos off my phone for the next video of the trip. I am stuck in port due to weather so not much eles to do i suppose. Cheers.
This is the first day of the Bomb cyclone off the coast of California. This boat hasn't been in this kind of weather in many many years. Purchased on the Sacramento Delta, brought out of retirement to brave the seas North of Cape Mendocino. She's holding steady not leaking much water. Showing her strength threw the storm safely tied to the dock along with all the other vessels.
My dad came down to see the boat a few weeks after I had purchased Desiderata, he said "welp let's take her for a cruise." So we checked the oil and fired the ol Yanmar up and headed upriver. It's been down river and north up the California Coast from there.
Short video of my sail from SF to Ft. Bragg. The weather was fair so not to much action. I anchored in Drakes bay the first night and Fish Rocks the second night. Both were to foggy and dark to get any good video. I don't recommend anchoring in Fish Rocks unless you are confident in the ability to dodge rocks in the fog. This was my first leg of my solo sail to Eureka CA. With many fuel issues at sea I was able to make repairs in Ft. Bragg. Thanks for watching and I hope to get the remainder of the trip online soon:)
Such a beautiful calm day to stop into Ft. Bragg for a few days on my trip north. I had been having fuel issues since I departed the bay, but I was able to completely fix them while in Noyo. I also met some amazing folks who fed me well, told stories of their experiences at sea, gave me sound advice about the seas I was to encounter along the way, and kept an eye on Desiderata while I returned home to work for a week. I had never been in the seas between Noyo and Cape Mendocino and the advice I learned was taken with me when I departed Noyo. I cannot wait to return and visit again. Until then I will be giving myself a headach staring at the computer putting together the rest of the trip:)
Sailed San Francisco Bay July 4th weekend. I had planned on heading out the Golden Gate and running north but had electrical issues that forced me back to port for repairs.
Second sails up for Desi and I. Boat yard to Oakland Marinas. Great sailing, just pay no mind to the tides, I didn't want to run the engine and had never sailed in the Bay a day in my life. I learned allot. Its like white water kayaking a flooded creek for the first time, after years of dreaming about it but not much planning before jumping in, and the shore is allot further away. My Rudder head failed three hours into the trip in the light wind. Granted the yard had supposedly repaired it before launching Desi back into the water. Unfortunately they splashed the boat without me being able to inspect anything, that alone was a disappointment considering I was adamant about being there to watch the launch. The real disappointment was when the rudder head came completely off the shaft and left me with no rudder. I was able to get it on to make it safe to port but the situation could have been way worse. Also the repairs have ever been the same. I took Desi back to the boat yard where they said they would fix the problem without drilling threw the rudder shaft. I was VERY adamant about my shaft not being compromised. After being at the yard for a week I returned to sail her back yet again and what did I notice, a threw bolt drilled directly threw my rudder shaft. All of which could have been avoided in the very first place as my rudder head was over tightened and cracked when first visiting the yard. Granted I have not been sailing near as much as before due to my compromised rudder shaft. I hope you all enjoy the little shorter video. Please subscribe and hopefully many more videos to come soon. Thanks to everyone who has helped me in this crazy childhood dream:)
Still learning how to upload and create videos. I have lots more including the trip down the delta for her haul out and bottom paint, my solo trip under the Golden Gate ect. Hopefully soon I will be able to create and upload more. This video my phone put together for me:) Also the blue and white Valient that's sailing on a starboard tack is SV Kinship the boat I lived on and sailed over 14 years ago out of SantaCruz. I had tears when we shared the same wind together. #sanfranciscobaysailing #sfbaysailing #lovesailing #svdesiderata #sailinglife #sailingdesiderata #goldengate
