Have you ever wondered how we get the grain pattern on our bulkheads to match the doors? It's easy really, our doors are cut out from the bulkheads. Our bulkheads are laminated in place, they are made of two, 15mm thick marine grade plywood panels bonded together, there is also 0.9-1.2mm thick Sapele mahogany veneer on each side. This is the wood you see once the bulkhead is finished and we like it to match the door, perfectly. Before the bulkhead can be fitted, if there is a doorway, it needs to be added. This poses a few problems. Because every boat is individually built, one boat differs from the next so each yacht uses wood from the same tree, and this keeps the colour and grain pattern consistent throughout, but cutting out a door from a bulkhead would cause the bulkhead to flex. Even at over 30mm (1 1/4 in) thick a little flex could cause a problem and make it difficult to close a door once it's installed. For this reason, we cut out the door, add the laminated Sapele mahogany frame to the bulkhead and 6mm of solid Sapele mahogany around the door and then fit the door into the bulkhead and secure the two together. Only then do we fit the bulkhead into position on the yacht. Once the bulkhead is securely laminated in place, the doors are removed and labelled before varnishing. The doors and the bulkheads are varnished separately. The bulkheads remain unvarnished to allow the GRP laminate and glues that attach the bulkhead to the hull to bond fully with the wood. At Sirius, we build our yachts to last you many decades. With longevity comes maintenance and repairs. Our yachts are built with ease of ownership in mind, and this is why, if you need to remove a hidden deck fitting we've attached, there will be GRP packing around the nuts below the deck. Not only does this prevent any ingress of water around the fitting, it means that any bolt or machine screw can be removed and replaced on your own, and without having to remove any of the interior. Anyone who has unscrewed a bolt, and heard the tell-tale clatter of a nut falling off, will know the sinking realisation that a quick job has now become a long job. The headlining and possibly parts of the interior will need to be removed to access the bolt. We never want that to happen to you. There may be times when deck fittings need to be repaired or replaced. We varnish by hand. We let our craftsmen use their skill and their eyes to decide when the wood used in the interior has enough varnish. Many companies use varnishing machines that spray thin layers of varnish onto the wood; often before the wood is assembled into the finished part. By applying vanish by hand we get a thicker, more hard-wearing finish on our wooden surfaced. By varnishing after units are assembled the wood is completely sealed and moisture has nowhere to enter the wood. Our bulkheads are varnished only once they have been laminated in the boat. This fully seals the wood, to ensure a tough finish for years to come. Did you know our boats don't have a hull-to-deck joint? We don't make our yachts like other manufacturers, we make them better, stronger, and to last longer. One of the ways we distinguish our yachts from the mass-produced yachts is the way we join the hull to the deck. Some manufacturers bond the hull to the deck with structural adhesive, some bond and use screws, some bond and bolt. We are one of a few manufacturers who bond and then laminate the deck to the hull. Doing this makes the hull stronger; the hull and the deck become a single, strong structure. It is easier and quicker to fit the interior of a yacht before the deck is attached, but doing this means that the deck will have to be joined with the bulkheads and some of the interior in place - this makes the join harder to access. We join the hull and deck as one of the first parts of the build process; the whole join can be laminated and we know there will be no voids.
