The Seamester experience is designed to be adventurous, so to say that there are no risks would be misleading. However, awareness of these inherent risks is the key to developing the strategies we use to manage them. Managing risk is a significant responsibility and is something we take seriously. Naturally, our staff plays an integral role in our risk management strategy. Most team members are multi-talented, combining professional training and practical expertise with the more traditional university, graduate, and post-graduate degree education. Our staff includes U.S. Coast Guard, and MCA licensed captains, marine scientists, oceanographers, medically trained personnel, and PADI scuba instructors. The Student to staff ratio is typically 4:1, providing close interaction and individual attention. Along with the majority of the world's highest quality yachts, Seamester schooners proudly fly the red ensign. The U.K. Ship Registry is renowned for its high international standards of maritime safety, and each vessel undergoes a thorough annual inspection to maintain its classification. In addition to our standard safety equipment, such as personal flotation devices, tethers and harnesses, EPIRBS, immersion suits, and liferafts, the ability to communicate effectively is essential in mitigating risk. We have an established communication protocol, and utilizing satellite connectivity, our teams can communicate by voice or data anywhere on the planet. To add additional support, we partner with an international emergency response firm to provide integrated medical assistance for the remote environments we operate in. Our partner provides us world-class medical advice, security services, and evacuation coordination anywhere in the world. Risk management is a partnership, so we rely on our students taking an active role in maintaining their own safety. Taught by our staff, and then reinforced through practical application, students employ safe practices during everyday activities, and through repetition, these practices become second nature. Throughout the voyage, students are expected to exhibit good judgment, and display appropriate leadership behavior, in addition to developing proficient risk management skills themselves. Through experience, we've learned that the most successful semesters are those when everyone aboard is fully committed to creating a supportive and safe environment for all.
As a crewmember aboard a Seamester sailing vessel, not only are you an integral part of sailing the vessel from point a to point b, but also managing all other aspects of life aboard a sailing yacht. All responsibilities on board are divided up using a small rotational chart referred to as the job wheel. The job wheel assigns each crew member with their role for the upcoming day. Every morning the wheel turns, giving you a new responsibility. Here are just a few of the roles you will fill during your seamester voyage. Skipper: The skipper serves as the leader of the vessel. As skipper you ensure that all onboard operations and program activities are running smoothly and on time. And in the evening you'll record the day's activities in the ship's log. Chef/Sous Chef Potentially the most important role aboard, the head chef and sous chef plan and prepare each meal, serving up delicious food to everyone on board. Bosun/Deckie As bosun, you are the leader of the deckie team. You'll head up all on deck activities such as securing dinghies, deck washes, and setting and striking the ensign at sunrise and sunset. Engineer As engineer you'll ensure all boat systems are operating smoothly. With regular system checks, you'll monitor the engine, generator, and water maker to ensure safe operation. Working as a crew provides a great platform for strong bonds and lifelong friendships to form. And being responsible for every aspect of life aboard the vessel makes it truly feel like you've earned every mile of your voyage.
On all Seamester voyages, you and your fellow students serve as active members of the crew. This includes the unique and challenging role of creating meals for everyone on board. Once every 20-30 days, you and another crew member will be responsible, for making breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire crew. So what is the food like? That's really up to whoever is the head chef that day. A few days before your turn as head chef you'll be asked to write up your meal plans for that day, plus all of the ingredients you'll need to make it happen. While it's somewhat of a blank canvas, you'll have to keep in mind things like the boat's current location, supplies on board, and ingredients available at our next port, as well as options to provide for students with dietary restrictions and allergies. At most ports-of-call, a provisioning team will visit the local grocery store and markets to fill up a small convoy of shopping carts with fresh produce and food. After returning to the vessel with the supplies, you'll work as a team to store the provisions into every nook and cranny for the days ahead. When it's your day as the head chef, you'll find all your ingredients and spend time in the galley, alongside your sous-chef, bringing your recipes to life. Whether you fancy yourself as the next Top Chef or feel like Mac n' Cheese is more your comfort level, your staff will be there to help guide you through your cooking experience. When your culinary creation is ready, it's time to gather on deck to enjoy your delicious home-cooked dinner with your crew while you take in the beautiful views from a life at sea.
Depending on your Seamester voyage, passages between ports of call can range anywhere from a short 4-hour sail up to 18 days at sea. While it takes the entire crew to raise the anchor and set sail, once you're underway, it only takes a handful of the crew to stand watch and maintain the proper course. As a Seamester student, you play an active part of that crew and will be responsible for standing watch alongside your staff. The crew is typically split into three watch teams. Watches run continuously from the time the vessel leaves port until the anchor drops at our next destination. The standard watch schedule is usually 4 hours on, followed by 8 hours off. Each watch team is paired with at least one staff member, and each member of the watch will alternate through the following primary duties to ensure the safe passage of the vessel. Helmsperson: On the helm, you are the ship's pilot, using compass and GPS navigation to guide the vessel along its plotted course. Bow Watch: At least one crew member must stand watch at the bow of the vessel. Serving as the eyes of the helmsperson, you'll look out for other ships and navigational hazards while occasionally being joined by some oceanic visitors. Boat Check: Lastly, it's of vital importance to monitor all vessel systems. Every hour you'll do a ship walkthrough, checking things like rigging, battery voltage, and fluid levels, and recording the vessel position in the ship's log. As a watch team member, knowing that YOU are in charge of the vessel's safe passage across the world's oceans gives you an incredible sense of responsibility and accomplishment, one that you won't find with any other study abroad program.
