Come to find out the fitting for the fuel return line got split open causing the fuel to spray wildly. We were able to find a repair shop to get the piece welded back together and were able to get the diesel mess cleaned up using lots of dish soap and a deodorizing spray. Now that we have the engine back in running order it is time for us to make our way back up the Florida coast to Fort Pierce, where we started our journey back in February. On the way out of the Palm Beach anchorage we passed a famously known cruising yacht named Venus. We didn't film any of us motor sailing along the coast, because there really wasn't much to see, but picked our story up again as we were entering the Fort Pierce inlet. There was a strong 4 knot current flowing from the Fort Pierce inlet as the tide was going out which made for a very slow entry. The bay was very crowded with people and boats due to it bing a holiday weekend. Tomorrow is Memorial day, so we're pretty sure the marina office will be closed. We will anchor for a couple of day and then go in on Tuesday to talk with them. We are still actively trying to sell Turtle as quickly as possible, but haven't gotten any calls yet. Kenzie put together a video showing all of the upgrades we made to our boat in hopes of grabbing people's attention. Here is a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhLan1B1Vd0&t=381s On day 6 of being anchored at Palm Beach, near Peanut Island, we decided that we would motor out to sea so we could dump the toilet. We hadn't quite made it to the other side of the anchorage when Kenzie noticed that the floor inside the cabin looked wet. As she went down below it was quickly made known that the diesel engine had sprung a leak somehow and was making quite the mess on the floor and in the bilge! We quickly shut the engine off and hoisted the mainsail so we could safely make our way back to where we had been anchored. Upon examination we found that the fitting for the fuel return line got split open causing the fuel to spray wildly. We later realized that the malfunction must have occurred when Randall was placing the companionway steps back over the engine on a previous day. The night sail from West End to the Florida coast was absolutely beautiful! We arrived to the Florida coast at dawn on May 16th, 2017. We slowly made our way to a familiar anchorage at West Palm Beach where we knew there was good holding and enough space for us to be out of the way of other boats passing by. Now that we are back to reality we need to figure out how to get Turtle sold in a timely manner before hurricane season begins. This decision wasn't easy for us to make and in reality isn't something we had originally planned on when we were first setting out on this adventure. Our sailboat has been our home for the past 6 years and it is hard to imagine our lives without it. It will be extremely difficult for us to close this chapter of our story, but we know it is something we have to do if we want to be able to move forward to bigger and better things in life. For now we are trying to soak up every last minute we have with our boat here in The Bahamas. We wish we were anchored along a beautiful beach somewhere, but our time here in The Bahamas is running out quick and we have to start preparing for our long journey back across the Gulf Stream to Florida. Unfortunately there aren't any good anchorages around West End right now, so we are trying to make the best of being tied up to a stationary dock in a costly marina. We got a slip at Old Bahama Bay and were relieved to have a gentle breeze blowing while in the marina to help cool us down. While at the fuel dock we experienced some frustration when the ignition switch wouldn't start the engine. If you have been following our story you will remember that this isn't the first time we have had to deal with this problem. Luckily it wasn't too difficult for us to bypass and we were able to move out of the way of other cruisers wanting to use the fuel dock. With this being our last destination in The Bahamas, we were sure we wouldn't ever get the chance, but when asking the lobbyist for walking directions to the local grocery store we were told we could ride the marina's bikes there for free! We were so excited! We knew that Hurricane Matthew had hit West End about 7 months earlier and had heard stories of how devastating the destruction had been for many people within its path, but now seeing some of the damage in person was amazing for us. We can't imagine how it must have felt to be in such a storm. It was sad to see torn up homes trying not to fall apart, and skeletons of building fighting to stand up. If there's one thing we have learned while visiting The Bahama's is that the people here are Stronger than the Storm! The weather forecast has been showing limited wind for the past couple of days and many of our sailing friends have been taking the opportunity to motor back to Florida while the ocean is calm. We too are preparing for our crossing, but don't feel the need to be rushed back into reality just yet. We have been slowly making our way across this breathtakingly flat ocean, taking in the absolute unreal beauty of not knowing where the horizon meets the sky, and thinking how surreal it feels to be completely alone in this moment of time. Words truly can't express the feelings we felt on May 10th, 2017. We still can't believe how tremendously remarkable it was for us to go on our epic sailing adventure to The Bahamas and we have felt so blessed to have videos like this one to help remind us of how special and rewarding this journey has been for us. It didn't matter how much bug spray we put on, we each ended up with hundreds of tiny bites all over our entire bodies that we can't stop itching, and the "after bite itch eraser" isn't helping relieve the burning itch sensation one bit. We even tried applying Manuka Honey to the bites, which seemed to help temporarily, but also made it difficult to move about in fear of getting everything we touched a sticky mess. The heat along with the humidity is also getting to us. The temperature didn't drop at all during the night making it difficult for us to sleep. It also didn't help that there wasn't any wind to help cool things down.We ended up tossing and turning all night scratching ourselves to death, wishing it was morning already. This morning we are pulling up anchor and are planning on motoring to Great Sale Cay where we will be able to rest for the night before continuing on our journey back towards Florida. We are sad to be passing by so many fun islands and places that we were hoping to see along the way, but we simply can't risk going ashore and getting any more bug bites. This is such a beautiful place and we feel so blessed to be out here on our Epic Sailing Adventure, but the time has come for us to prepare to leave the tropical waters of The Bahamas and return back to our normal lives. One fun thing about today was when a pod of about 7 dolphins came and swam with us! This was the 2nd time on our trip that dolphins came to swim and play with us on Turtle. It is such a magical experience; one we will never forget! We also wanted to have some fun in the dinghy and get some awesome drone footage of Randall speeding up and down the beach. We were having great fun until Kenzie accidentally crashed the drone into a tree branch causing the drone to fall to the ground. Upon retrieving the drone we found that the arm holding the gimbaled camera broke making the drone impossible to use. It was a very sad day for Kenzie, so we didn't film anything else that day, but we were able to take the drone back to the boat and Randall fixed the arm by making a double splint out of PVC pipe and some tiny screws. Today we are picking up anchor and motoring to Crab Cay due to there not being any wind. We stopped on the way at Spanish Cay to get some fuel for the dinghy and were also able to get some much wanted ice cream and soda. We dropped anchor at Crab Cay and went for a short dinghy ride over to the beach to see if we could find any coconuts. Kenzie was able to test fly her drone and was extremely excited that it still worked perfectly! We made an easy day sail from Green Turtle Cay over to a beautiful island called Manjack. We were invited to join a group of people who were feeding a stingray in the water. We later found out that Manjack Cay is actually a popular destination where people can come and feed the semi tame stingrays and sharks. It was a really fun experience. Later that day we wanted to have some fun in the dinghy and get some awesome drone footage of Randall speeding up and down the beach. We were having great fun until Kenzie accidentally crashed the drone into a tree branch causing the drone to fall to the ground. We have been carefully keeping an eye on our anchor due to the pudding like bottom and the anticipation of high winds throughout the next couple of days. The wind continued to build throughout the morning as forecasted and a nearby boat belonging our friends, started dragging swiftly across the anchorage. Their Rockna anchor had become completely fauled with grass in the soft mud and refused to bite causing them to drift across the anchorage at nearly 2 knots. After helping them attempt to reset the anchor several times with little success, they decided to take a slip at the dock where they knew they'd get a better nights sleep with no more worries about their anchor. To thank everyone for helping get things back under control, they invited us all to lunch at what turned out to be a fantastic little restaurant on the far side of Bluff Cay. We had a delicous lunch at the Bluff House Tranquil Turtle, which we can highly recommend. While we ate our lunch the weather continued to build slowly and then suddenly exploded into gale force winds and pounding rain. Worried about our boat we ran across the Island in the pouring rain to check on our boat. Thankfully Turtle was sitting nicely along with our other friends boat. The following day brought calmer weather perfect for exploring the Island. We dropped the anchor and spent a calm evening in a protected, but gusty anchorage. We were excited to find this little spot, because of it's proximity to No Name Cay. We had recently found out that there are pigs living on the island, much like the more popular and well known pigs at Big Major Spot in the Exumas. There were a lot more pigs here in the Abacos, but they were definitely more smelly, gross and aggressive. There were lots of cute baby pigs to look at, but we were not able to get very close to many of them due to the mother pigs being very protective of them. After a very brief pig diversion we got back to our more important task of finding dinner. One thing that we've really noticed in the Abacos is how much more reef access there is compaired to the Exumas. We motored around to the outer windward side of No Name Cay were there is no shortage of fish filled reefs and again easy access to tons of dive moorings. After catching a fish for dinner we motored back to Turtle to find that our boat had moved about 200 feet from where we left it. It is a mystery to us how it randomly moved, even after being anchored there all night in gusty conditions. Our guess at the time was that one of the boats anchored next to us must have snagged our anchor line when they left the anchorage. The weather forecast is showing the wind boxing the campus during the next couple of days, so we want to make sure we are in a well protected anchorage. White Sound looks like it will be the perfect spot for us, but we have to wait for high tide to get in through the channel with our 5' keel. Upon dropping anchor at White Sound we noticed that our anchor wasn't catching the bottom at first. Randall dove on the anchor once we got a good tug, and found that our anchor was snagged on a large piece of chain. It is probably the only thing that stopped us from dragging further in the pudding like bottom. He also found a lot of random junk on the bottom of the bay, like an outboard motor, and engine block, and lots of chain and ropes. We later found out that this anchorage has a history of boats dragging and probably isn't the safest place to leave your boat during storms. Who knows, maybe the bottom at Settlement Harbour has a similar bottom too. The water at the reef was freezing cold, but that didn't stop us from swimming around or from enjoying ourselves while in such a beautiful place! We were just glad that we wore our shorty wet suites to help keep us warm. Snorkeling on the North West side of Guana Cay turned out to be a fantastic spot to find vibrant sea-life and it had lots of variety for dinghy anchoring spots as well as several dive morrings to chose from. We did a little bit of both and found that no matter where we went, the reefs were spectacular and there was plenty of fish swimming around! After a cold, but fun morning of snorkeling we returned back to Turtle and picked up anchor so we could continue our transit across the Abacos. All of our past experience with getting propane have been more trouble than it's worth. While waiting for our tank to be filled we continued our search for new spark plugs for our dinghy outboard. These are something we have been looking for and have had no luck finding for the past 2 months! After several hours of walking countless miles and visiting many stores, we finally found a gas station that had the right spark plugs! We bought the last 3 that they had, picked up our propane, and spent the rest of the day celebrating Randall's birthday. The following morning we filled up at the fuel dock and made our way out of the Marsh Harbour Bay and had a fantastic time sailing over to Great Guana Cay of the Abacos. We anchored on the Southwest side of the Island just outside of the marina entrance and were able to get a spectacular view of the Island by flying the drone. We couldn't believe how many new homes were being built along the beach and were very impressed by the beauty of the area. While anchored at Great Guana Cay we noticed that the wind and tide started to oppose each other which makes our boat do nasty things. In these kinds of situations we have learned to set a stern anchor along with the bow anchor to help keep our butt end downwind. We are so blessed to be here in The Bahamas, living out one of Randall's lifetime dreams. He has worked so hard to get to where we are now, to be doing what we are doing, and I couldn't be more excited for him and all that he has accomplished. We have created some pretty amazing memories together on this trip and I am so happy that we get to share our story with our friends and family members through our videos. We woke up in the middle of the night to the blaring sounds of people blowing their air horns repeatedly. Sleepy eyed and confused we poked our heads out of the companionway to see what all the commotion was, but could only see glimpses of anchor lights sitting upon the tall masts of fellow cruisers in the anchorage. In the vast darkness surrounding our boat we started to see flashes of light as people were trying to see what was going on. Not too far from our boat we saw a large white boat moving sideways right down the middle of the anchorage! The thing was gigantic and there was no stopping it from crashing into the boats of sleeping sailors downwind of it's destructive path! We quickly jumped into action by getting on our lifejackets and motoring over to it in our dinghy to see if we could help in anyway. We quickly learned that no one was aboard the ghost ship and that it was up to us and the other cruisers in the bay to help save the 67' catamaran before it could do any further damage! We had PERFECT sailing conditions from Tilloo Cay over to Matt Lowe's Cay which is right next to Marsh Harbour. Once we dropped anchor we remembered that we were still waiting for the dinghy patch to fully set before we could us the dinghy, so we made a day of scraping coconuts and milking the cream, so that we could make the most delicious curry for dinner! After we finished eating our curry dinner we moved over to John Cash Point for the night in order to get a little better protection from the tide flowing between Matt Lowe's cay and John Cash Point. It was definitely better, but we still had to put out a stern anchor and keep a careful watch maintaining tension on both anchor rodes all night to avoid wrapping the keel. The next day we sailed around Outer Point and into the excellent protected anchorage inside Marsh Harbour. We're really excited to try out the dinghy with it's new patch and also to go ashore and see what we can find, in what looks like a great little town. We were going to search for a couple of grocery stores that we saw on the map, but we crossed downwind of the most heavenly smell of bbq chicken and suddenly Randall's priorities changed. We did eventually find the grocery stores, but not until he made an absolute pig of himself and was covered in bbq sauce! We were absolutely loving Marsh Harbour. What a great little town with a perfectly protected anchorage, and no current. Randall was able to find 2 giant coconuts, one of them being at least 15 pounds! The fizzy water inside one of them was refreshing for him to drink, but the other coconut had already gone bad. After having a successful morning coconut hunting we sailed back towards Pelican Cays to give exploring the area a second try. We were able to successfully anchor at Sandy Cay by dropping a stern anchor along with our regular anchor to keep us from wrapping the keel while we were away from the boat. We then took the dinghy around the island to a giant reef that we saw on the chart. There are several buoys along the reef to tie your dinghy up to while snorkeling, and the vibrant sea life was exciting to see. We were even lucky to swim with a spotted sea turtle! As we arrived back to Turtle later that day, Randall placed our dinghy anchor on the transom of the boat. Large swells were rolling in causing the anchor to slide off the back of the boat. Sadly the dinghy and the swim platform sandwiched the little anchor before it could fall into the water leaving a giant hole on the starboard tube of the dinghy, instantly deflating it. We had a restful night and didn't have any problems with the anchorage. This morning we are sailing over to Pelican Cays which are a series of small islands managed by the land and sea park. We are looking forward to getting off the boat, walking the beach, swimming and hopefully finding a coconut or two. As we approached Pelican Cay we could see gigantic palm trees and an incredible sandy beach. We were so excited to go ashore and do some exploring, but upon dropping anchor, we found that there was a strong tidal current flowing perpendicular to the wind, which was sure to wrap our keel. Not wanting to give up, we tried two other nice looking anchorages, but found the same strong flowing cross current which left us no option, but to anchor deeper inside the bay away from the inlets, and unfortunately too far from Pelican Cay to check it out in the dinghy. We are finally sailing to the Abacos, here in The Bahamas! We started our day at Royal Island near Spanish Wells on Eleuthera and made our way south around Egg Island. The crossing started out picture perfect with a calm ocean and strong winds. We were making great time and even hit 6.5 knots at one point! That is way fast for us! Shortly after getting into the Northeast Providence Channel, we found ourselves fighting a strong current of water forcing us to turn on the engine and start motor-sailing. Randall got hungry and made a Mountain House meal, using the JetBoil, but had a little mishap...We arrived at Little Harbour Cut with plenty of sunlight and were happy find a perfect anchorage for the night. The spastic lightning, and bipolar wind kept us from getting much sleep, so we aren't feeling up to making the 50 mile voyage across the Northeast Providence Channel to the Abacos today. It's probably for the best that we don't try to leave today. We can imagine how mixed up the seas must be today after such a confusing night of playing tug-of-war with the indecisive wind.
