Enough pretty anchorages, lets go sailing! We've been soaking up the beauty of the remote islands of the Lao group in Fiji, but today is a sailing day. Fast and loose is the captains order and Rio loves to deliver. Join us as we barrel through the atolls on our catamaran to an island with the most narrow and dangerous outer reef pass we have ever encountered.

Empty fridge and freezer, three days sail from any supermarket, and a family to feed. Living on a catamaran in remote paradise is mind blowingly good, but it can also be stressful... however nothing sharpens the prehistoric senses like an empty belly and a crew to feed! Have you ever been somewhere where you're pretty certain the first footprints on that beach were yours? This is how we felt in some places on the island of Ongea in Fiji. The beauty of this place coupled with the thrill of a high speed dinghy ride through a volcanic mushroom rock field... has made it one of our our favourite places so far...

We are in a dream sailing location, the sun is shining and island paradise is on the doorstep.... BUT we aren't seeing any of it. We are down in the hulls and bilges slogging it out... I have a leak in the port bow, and the seals on the vital watermaker are failing - water is mixing with oil in the crankcase and oil is going into our water supply ! Aaaahhhhhh

It's a big call we know! But this place will forever hold a special place in our hearts... an island deep in remote Fiji... no hotels, no restaurants, no passenger ferry's, no tourism... just Fiji before the rest of the world arrived. We sail here to this magical place full of white sandy beaches and untouched reef, it's only accessible by boat, and boy are we blown away....

It's a classic cruiser 180 degree turn... winds change, plans change... here we are sailing happily through the Yasawa Island chain in Fiji when boom... the weather throws a curveball and instead of running to an anchorage to hide.. we hoist the spinnaker and full main and run with it at full pace - but where are we going?

It's true. She managed to drag me away from the cluster of surf spots surrounding Cloudbreak. It took some leverage, but eventually the wife always wins! Truth is, I'm glad she did. As we sail through the Mamanuca and the Yasawa island chains, we find uninhabited islands, swim with giant rays and are left speechless by some incredible anchorages. Oh and I make a pretty serious pinky promise....

After seven years living on a boat we operate pretty well as a family unit, but on some crossings, and in really remote places, we sometimes wish we had another person onboard to help out, and share this magical experience. It's the jewel in the Fiji surfing crown and on this day it was enormous and pristine... light offshore winds with a solid groundswell.. close to 3 metres with an 18 second period. Cloudy was thundering. We were lucky enough to be there to watch the pro show as they all flew in for a chance to tackle Cloudy at her best. Some of the gladiators in the pit this day included local legend Che Slater, alongside the big names - Nathan Florence, Laura Enever, the Coffin brothers, Conner and Parker, Billy Kemper and more...

It's the words that strike fear into the heart of any seafarer... diesel bug. The nasty dark gummy slime that coats your tank - hoses and filters and eventually ruins your engine... the voracious little bugger doubles in size every 20 minutes... its like aliens but there's no Sigourney Weaver to save you... we have it, and we can't get rid of it!

Does the destination match the dream? We'd planned to get here for so long, we didn't think too much about what we would do when we got here. But we have a boat full of surfboards, the world's best waves, and sandy island anchorages now on our doorstep... so let's see if we can find our way through the coral heads to make this happen!

Fiji is a sailors dream destination.. add surfing, spearing, diving, foiling, sunshine and coconuts - and you have a Mecca for all things salty. Sure we've been preparing for this for years, but when the time comes it's always a mad rush. Final boat preparations, storm sails, heavy weather gear, water, diesel, weather guessing, food prep, map plotting, will we go - won't we go? Are we doing the right thing even? And then there's the difficulty in disconnecting from all the things that tie you down to land... friends, family, work commitments, memberships, subscriptions... And hey, what the hell is our address now? The answer... the ocean I guess, somewhere out there....
