We leave our boat behind in Seattle to sail a 7-day bareboat charter out of La Paz, Baja California, Mexico -- and discover possibly the 5 most beautiful bays in the Sea of Cortez. Follow along as we visit Isla Espiritu Santo, Isla Partida, Isla San Francisco, Bahia Amortajada on Isla San Jose and the fishing village of San Evaristo on the Baja peninsula. Plus, we meet up with Chris and Heather from SV Gypsea Explorer (Youtube: Sailing Gypsea Sceptre 41 Sailing, Instagram: writerjacks). While cruising BC's southern Gulf Islands, we check out Sage Hayward Vineyards on Saturna Island, along with brief visits in Boot Cove and Winter Cove. We buddy boat with Chris and Adelle on SV Uluwatu @Sailingbc and then head out to Reef Harbour -- a protected anchorage between Tumbo Island and Cabbage Island on the eastern side of Saturna.

Leaving British Columbia for the US, we sail south from Sooke to Port Angeles. But once again we run into issues with Customs upon our arrival. We visit Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park outside Port Angeles, then sail east to Sequim, visiting John Wayne Marina. Highlights also include transiting the Port Townsend Canal and discovering a secret anchorage just outside of Port Ludlow -- all unique out-of-the-way places for PNW cruising.

We continue sailing and exploring Barkley Sound, BC, on the Pacific side of Vancouver Island. As one of the salmon fishing capitals of the world, we attempt to catch a salmon for the first time. Highlights include visiting the towns of Ucluelet and Tofino, hiking the Wild Pacific Trail, the Ucluelet Aquarium, and eating fish tacos at Tofino's famous taco truck, Tacofino. Anchorages include Joe's Bay, Effingham Bay and Reeks Island in the Broken Group of Islands of Barkely Sound.

After leaving Bamfield, we set out to explore Barkley Sound, and uncover five secret places along the way. Highlights include a secret trail across Fleming Island marked only by buoys, zig-zagging through a dangerous channel into Jaques-Jarvis Lagoon, finding the mysterious Reeks Island stone face, getting lost in a labyrinth of channels between the Pinkerton Islands, and dinghying up Lucky Creek to find miles of raging waterfalls. During this time, we seemed to be all alone in the Sound -- as we didn't see another boat for nearly two weeks.

We sail west out the Strait of Juan de Fuca to explore the wild Pacific coast of Vancouver Island BC. Highlights include Victoria, Sooke, Port Renfrew and Bamfield on our way to Barkley Sound.

As we sail both sets of islands, crossing the international border, we look at what makes Washington's San Juan Islands and BC's Gulf Islands so different, and similar, to each other for cruising.

While we weren't sure if it was a good idea to begin with, we head out for a 2-day sail to go shrimping for spot prawns from our sailboat in Puget Sound. Please comment on this video with your thoughts on what happened!

As we sail the San Juan Islands, visiting Prevost Harbor and Turn Point Lighthouse on Stuart Island, and spend 3 days waiting out at storm at Matia Island, we get a chance to test out Indigo's new battery and solar upgrade. More of our adventures in BC's Discovery Islands. As we sail from Rebecca Spit to Octopus Islands, through Beazley Passage and Surge Narrows, it becomes clear that we're completely unprepared for long term cruising.

There are times when nothing seems to go your way. As we sail into the Desolation Sound area, a series of constant unexpected challenges started coming as soon as we headed into Campbell River, and then into Von Donop Inlet. But ultimately, it's not about the challenges, it's how you deal with them. Because when you're sailing, stuff IS gonna happen.
