We depart Little Farmer’s Cay and motor-sail further south along the Exuma bank. As we make our way to Rudder Cut Cay, one of David Copperfield’s 11 islands in the area, we pass by the pristine Musha Cay, home to Copperfield’s exclusive resort. Once our anchor is set we head over to check out 'The Musician,' the famous underwater sculpture commissioned by Copperfield (approximate coordinates: N 23 52.15, W 76 14.23). Later on we link up with a couple fellow cruisers we met at Little Farmer’s Cay - Michael and Nikki of SV Anahata for a little cave party! When an uninvited guest arrives we decide to take the party out to the water! We raft up our dinghies and drift out to a small island called Dove Cay. We love this little spot so much we decide to go back the next day for a beach BBQ. The next morning it’s time to conquer our first cut out into the Atlantic Ocean as we head all the way down to George Town, Great Exuma. While we’re nervous to go through our first cut, it ends up being the least of our worries. We leave Black Point and head 10.5 miles South to Little Farmer’s Cay, a small island settlement with a couple of restaurants, a few shops and a harbour full of marine life. We spend a couple of days here wandering through town and checking out the surrounding snorkel spots and restaurants. Our last night anchored on the West side of the island we experience one of the most magical, serene moments of our adventure. We’re in complete awe of our surroundings - the silent air and incredibly still water underneath a golden sunset. Black Point has quickly become one of our favorite stops in the Exumas so we’re happy to spend an extra few days here while we wait for Lorraine’s mom to return to the island to get our hands on some of her famous bread. We venture to the neighboring island of Bitter Guana to meet the prehistoric iguanas that live here (it’s a protected habitat for them so visitors are encouraged not to touch or harass them). It’s really cool to see them up close, living their best lives on the beautiful beaches of this island. They aren’t as gross or aggressive as the famous swimming pigs, so if you have the chance to go say hi to these guys, we definitely recommend it! Before we head to our next destination, we’ve got to take care of the not-so-fun chores that come with living aboard a sailboat. We leave Staniel Cay and head for Black Point on Great Guana Cay, the largest settlement in the Exumas (aside from Great Exuma). We fell in love with this place, it’s such a cool local community full of bars, restaurants, markets and many other things to see and do in the area. After our short sail, we drop anchor in the quaint harbour and make our way in to town to the cruisers favorite Lorraine’s Cafe for happy hour/dinner. By the time we leave town the winds pick up to 25-30 kts from the West which means no protection, we just have to sit it out! Once the front passes, we’re more than ready to get off the boat and get some land time to stretch our legs. We run into the awesome Beau, Brandy and Oona from Sailing Saoirse (whom we’re big fans of!) and tag along to find a blow hole just a short walk from town. After spending several hours on the beautiful Atlantic side of the island, we head back to town to get some famous bread from Lorraine’s mom (she sells it out of her home, just behind Lorraine’s restaurant). After saying goodbye to our new friends we dinghy around the western tip of the island to do some snorkeling, conch diving and beach bumming. We travel 13nm from Warderick Wells to Cambridge Cay. From our mooring ball off this quaint island, snorkeling the ‘sea aquarium’ and exploring the caves of Rocky Dundas are just a dinghy ride away. A few days later we head another 13nm South to Big Majors and Staniel Cay. We had planned on checking out Thunderball Grotto, but the current wasn’t cooperating so we chilled out at the bar at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, not only a popular hang out for people but apparently nurse sharks too! We were anchored near pig beach so we could see when boat loads of tours would stop by to see the insta-famous swimming pigs. At times there were literally hundreds of people there so we decided to go early one morning before anyone else arrived. We sail a very short distance from Shroud Cay to Warderick Wells Cay, a large island within the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and home to the park's headquarters. We spend several days moored near Emerald Rock, exploring the beautiful island and it’s surroundings. We hike a couple of trails, taking us through mangroves and creeks, to blow holes and of course the top of the famous Boo Boo Hill, the highest point of the island with stunning 360 views. After the neighborhood sharks stop by to say hello we break out the paddle boards for the first time and go for a snorkel around Emerald Rock. We spend a day exploring Norman’s Cay, both underwater and on land. We snorkel an awesome sunken plane that was used for smuggling drugs in the 1980’s, now home to a variety of reef fish and beautiful coral. The next morning we head south to Shroud Cay, a really cool island at the northern end of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. The park is a beautiful 22 mile long protected area made up of 15 large islands and many other small ones. There is no fishing or taking anything from land, not many structures, and no cell towers, which means no phone service or wifi throughout the area. We spend a whole afternoon winding through the mangroves to reach one of the most incredible, picturesque places we’ve ever seen! We spend our last couple of days at the Palm Cay Marina in Nassau tackling a few boat chores and stocking up on provisions before heading to the beautiful Exuma Cays. The Exumas are often described as one of the most stunning, special places in The Bahamas. All of the cruisers we’ve met so far absolutely love the area, so we’ve been anxious to experience it for ourselves for the first time. From the east side of New Providence Island (Nassau), we travel 29 nautical miles in the incredibly clear blue, and at some points, shallow water to reach one of the first stops in the northern Exumas. We dropped anchor in Allan’s Cay, a very small island with nothing but rock and reef (there’s prehistoric iguanas on SW Allan’s, but we didn’t make it over there). While snorkeling the area, we spot 2 lionfish, which are incredibly invasive and dangerous to reefs. They have invaded The Bahamas and much of the Caribbean, have no predators, and each fish releases over 2 million eggs per year. (You can read more about lionfish here: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lionfish-facts.html) Keegan has been eager and excited to start spearfishing, we just haven’t seen many fish up until this point. So with his Hawaiian Sling, dives down for his first catch! We’ve known about lionfish and their threat to the reefs for years, we’ve just never had the opportunity to remove any - so this was an exciting moment. After a few days in Allan’s Cay, we head a bit south to our next destination - Norman’s Cay, another favored stop for cruisers. Our good friend Danny from Los Angeles arrives to Great Harbour to join the summer friday crew for a week. We spend a couple of days at Great Harbour Cay Marina (this place has the nicest staff, great facilities and bikes available for guests to use). We spend a day at Shelling Beach - probably the most incredible beach we've ever seen, followed by lunch and drinks at Beach Club, a cool restaurant/bar overlooking the white sand beach. We say goodbye to Great Harbour and head for our first anchorage in the Berry Islands, at the southern tip of Hoffman's Cay, just behind Fowl Cay. From this prime location, we take a short dinghy ride over to a small beach that opens up a narrow trail to a 600 feet wide blue hole surrounded by lush trees and rocky caves. While the plunge looks a lot further down than 20 feet, the experience is totally worth it! After one final day of beach hopping, snorkeling and foraging for coconuts near Hoffman's, we sail south for a few hours to Whale Cay. Our adventures in The Bahamas have officially kicked off! We spend a few days exploring Bimini - checking out all the restaurants and bars including Stuart's Conch Stand, Ebbie's Bonefish, Edith's Pizza, Sherry's Beach Bar and of course, Nate's Bread. *Spoiler alert: I dropped my phone into the ocean and lost footage of most of our time here. 😭 Then it's time to head East on our longest sail to date, to start our much awaited trip through the Berry Islands. We've been patiently (and often times impatiently) waiting for the perfect weather window to embark on our very first Gulf Stream crossing. We left from Key Biscayne, FL before dawn and set out on a beautiful day of sailing to our next destination of Bimini, Bahamas. While the wind was light the seas were calm and the sun was shining, treating us to a great crossing. Keegan worked and researched tirelessly for days to figure out why our solar panel system wasn't pulling in as much power as we should have been. After installing 4 new panels, 3 different charge controllers and completely new wiring - we have a brand new fully functioning and powerful solar panel system! We’ve anxiously been waiting to leave the marina in Fort Lauderdale that we’ve called home for the past two months and the time has finally come! After the boat work and minor set backs, we head south to Dinner Key in Biscayne Bay (the further south, the better for our crossing to The Bahamas). We encountered a lot of firsts on the short trip - first time maneuvering summer friday out of our narrow marina, first visit to a fuel dock, first dolphin sighting and first seasick cat 🙁. While we anticipated leaving Florida and setting sail to the Bahamas shortly after Christmas, unfortunately our list of projects and chores kept getting longer and longer. We caught the sailing bug and decided to take a break from our often-chaotic life in LA to go on an adventure of a lifetime.
