Time for an uexpected haul-out to the boatyard! If you didn't catch us last time, here's what happened: we were trying to leave for a sailing vacation when one thing after another went wrong and we couldn't even get out of the marina. So it's off to the yard and since we're hauling out anyway, we're gonna start by doing the bottom paint. Follow us on instagram/facebook: @sailingsphynx
The first night was red wine and rainfalls as we anticipated setting off this morning to leave our marina in Vancouver for the summer - destination: Victoria. The next morning: Strike ONE, the throttle/gear shifter is not working. The morning after that: Strike TWO, we have no acceleration. Later that afternoon: Strike THREE, we hit a wall, and it's off to the boat yard! Check us out on: Instagram: @sailingsphynx Facebook: @sailingsphynx
Last night we celebrated in anticipation of setting off this morning to leave our marina in Vancouver for the summer. First destination: Victoria. Needless to say, things do not go as planned. Check us out on: Instagram: @sailingsphynx Facebook: @sailingsphynx
Tonight, we're celebrating! I (Lisa) have just graduated and we think we're leaving tomorrow to go live on anchor around Vancouver Island, BC for the whole summer. We're SO hyped. Except we have no idea that everything's going to go to hell in a handbasket tomorrow. So, it is in blissful ignorance that we set up our "new" used sail, drink wine, eat steak & sushi, and really believe everything is going to be just fine. Spoiler alert: It's not. Living in our marina, working (& finishing school) from our 34 foot sailboat in North Vancouver. Unfortunately we were denied liveaboard moorage and have nowhere to live, so our days here are numbered before we cast off and head out to live on the hook for the summer. We had to put a short pause on boat life so in the meantime it's all studying, exams, hotel life, window washing and hotel cats! Z + L
Making the transition to liveaboard has been hard to make happen! We have the boat, but our recreational moorage doesn't allow liveaboards. So we kept renting but got a roomate.... except our apartment is really small, so that was pretty cramped. With moorage renewal coming up we applied for liveaboard status and decided to wing it and sublet the whole apartment for 6 months to try to make it happen. Except things didn't really go as we'd hoped. Z & L
We move onto our sailboat! ...Then immediately get [alpha] covid which lands us in 10 days of immediate & mandatory quarantine stuck inside our boat. At the time, contact tracing was in full swing and we could've been criminally liable for leaving our boat, so we were quite trapped. How it went down: when we moved out of our apartment and onto the boat, Zaq was feeling a little drained. We didn't think too much of it until after moving when he started to feel worse. So he booked a test and they scheduled him for one the next day - which is the first day of our video (also Lisa's first day of symptoms). We weren't really prepared to quarantine. We had some frozen and dry/canned food from the move but hadn't gotten fresh groceries yet. Good thing we didn't run out of propane, because who likes to eat dry rice and oatmeal!? and you can't get delivery (or your mail) when you can't get off your boat. Lisa was trapped with no wifi and a cell phone plan that didn't support her full-time virtual classes while Zaq missed a week of work. But we laid low and carried out our quarantine, and were very happy to step out into a fresh, rainy-grey spring morning once it was all over. We're packing up our apartment and moving onto a 34' sailboat! Oh, and welcome to our first vlog? Hi, we're Zaq and Lisa, a couple of Canadians in Vancouver starting life on the ocean with our two sphynx cubs, Ortus and Aether. We've dreamt of living aboard since we met, and in 2016 we bought a small starter boat. We sold it four years later and found this one: a 34' Bruce Roberts called s/v Copacetic. Now this is big enough (we think) to live on, so here we go! It's off to a rough start as we get sick right after we move (with covid, pre-vaccine availability) and enter into an unexpected quarantine to kick off liveaboard life. Farewell Pisceum, you were one kickass gateway drug. We bought this 26' sailboat (with no experience whatsoever) for $2,500 on Craigslist in 2016. Over the next four years we made mistakes, memories, and milestones learning how to sail on the coast of beautiful British Columbia. We didn't take all that many pictures, so we've put together everything we do have in an ode to a great starter boat. Pisceum was sold to a new owner in March 2020, and we've since upgraded to our next sailboat; something a little bigger. - Lisa + Zaq
