We take a short break from removing the bolds out of the crankshaft to assess the propane leak situation. As we inspect the propane leak in the propane locker we discover that the propane was not installed properly which could lead to dire consequences. I am so glad my dad found this issue before it exploded in our face quite literaly.

I break the easy out in the crankshaft trying to back the sheared bolts out of the flywheel of the perkins 4.108 engine. Long story short The second time I turned of the engine the flywheel broke lose from the crankshaft. There was two weeks left in the season! We are told we cannot possibly do the job without pulling the engine out of the boat completely which would be at least $1000 starting. Anyway we are in the middle of attempting the impossible by lifting the engine in the boat and climbing behind the engine to reattached the flywheel and while we are bach there we decide to take apart the rear seal.

We finally get slide the prop shaft backing giving us enough space to remove the thrust coupler. Removal of the transmission was pretty straight foreword, We then find the bolts that have broken off in the crankshaft! SO we have to lift the engine to remove the bellhousing get the flywheel out of the way and back the bolts out so they can be re-tapped. The fun and frustration has just begun like share and subscribe. Update: I am currently posting this video while in Santa Marta Colombia. We have sailed thousands of miles since this was recorded.

We need to re-attach the fly wheel in 2 weeks before the canals close for winter! The marina owner says it is absolutely impossible. A real test of our determination to get sailing! We found out the flywheel had broken lose from the crankshaft. Multiple people at this point have told me that the only way to repair this is to haul the whole engine completely out of the boat. Jimmy Jeff the marina owner has stated that we need to get on his haul out list for winter and the Rough estimate for the flywheel job was $3500 but "likely more".. "BUT we cannot take care of your engine until next spring" BUT ! That Doesn't stop us because My Dad and I aka "Al Mac" have a plan! So we think. . . Can we do the impossible job of removing the transmission, bellhousing and engine brackets without hauling the Perkins completely out of the boat? Oh and this is the first diesel and liveaboard cruising boat I have ever worked on! What have we gotten our self's into? Can we do the impossible and re-attach the flywheel back onto the crankshaft of our Perkins 4.108 Without using a crane to pull the engine out? #perkinsengine #sailingchannel #perkins4.108

Running Aground Episode They say there are three types of sailors - Those who have run aground, those that will run aground, and liars. Well, in this episode, we finally tell our story of the first time we ran HARD aground in our Jeanneau Sun Fizz Sailboat. We had just bought our boat on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Lake Champlain borders Canada, Vermont and New York, so it was a great location for us to start our journey, since it was only a 6 hour drive from our home in the Finger Lakes of New York. The northern part of the lake connects to the St Lawrence Seaway and the Southern end of the lake connects to the Hudson river via the Champlain Canal. The Green Mountains, Taconic Mountains and Adirondack Mountains surround the lake with beautiful high peaks but also makes it very difficult to navigate. This dramatic landscape means the lake can have very deep water that suddenly rises abruptly with underwater mountains. Even though we had paid for the boat, we were waiting for some of our paperwork to be processed. We were importing the boat from Canada to the United States and the process can be quite complicated. (For those of you interested in the importation process, let us know in the comments below if you would like us to break down the process in a separate episode). So we had not officially registered our boat yet since we needed a cancellation confirmation from the Canadian government before we could submit our paperwork to the United States Coast Guard for documentation. We took a risk, and decided, despite all that, we should test out our new boat and take her out for our first sail as new owners! We had a sea trial with the previous owners before we closed on the boat, during which we were told there are buoys to watch out for in certain areas. There was no chart plotter on the boat, and we were planning to use Navionics on our phone, but as we were preparing to sail off the mooring, we got distracted and forgot to pay attention to the depth. In our minds, we knew which areas to avoid. Our boat has a 6.8ft draft and a bolt on fin keel made of iron. I don't think I can put into words how loud the sound is when that much iron hits hard rock at 5 knots. Andrea tells the story, that she got into a car accident a month later, hit a deer and totaled her car. The sound of us hitting aground was about 5 times as loud as that car crash. It is terrifying. As if running around wasn't enough to deal with, it also was our first time having the dogs on board and we were in the process of moving. We had brought our first van load of items to unpack on the boat to start our liveaboard life. More drama ensued when the Marina owner in North Hero Vermont gave us a hard time for leaving our dogs in the car for a few minutes. It was a cold brisk morning, and we had to dingy back and forth from shore with all of the stuff we were unpacking onto the boat. The previous owner had paid for the mooring ball for the entire season upfront, and it transferred to us during the sale. We were planning to speak with someone in the Marina office our first morning there but wanted to unload a few things from the car first, including our morning coffee. Since the dogs had never been on the boat alone, we knew they would feel more comfortable in the car waiting for us. We certainly didn't want them to panic, jump overboard, or bark and disrupt all of the other boaters. So it seemed like the best solution. Downsizing your living space is a huge undertaking, let alone when your new home is a 40 ft boat! In this episode, we also discover we still have a lot of items we will need to part ways with The final chapter of the episode Logan had several large boxes of art some of it was great some of it not so much so he had a eccentric art burning ceremony letting go of the old to allow something new to take its place. PLease Like, Subscribe and leave comments! It really gives the algs an octane boost and gives Logan personal dopamine hits!

We look at a Jeanneau Sun Fizz liveaboard cruiser. This sailboat that is a bit closer to home and slightly larger with 3 cabins. Though I am not a big fan of the fin rudder we have to make sacrifices when boat shopping. This particular boat is set up to be powered at anchor. The family had it for 10 years 3 of which they cruised the Caribbean to Guatemala. This is a very thorough boat tour the ins and outs of this particular vessel. You can visibly see how excited we are to be taking this boat tour. I had been looking at this boat for months and even tried to see it in march while it still had snow on it. I had given up on this boat because the owner didn't seem motivated to sell and wanted to keep it another year. The boat is a really great bang for the buck especially because it would be imported and we would get a good exchange rate. However there is another SUN fizz on the market that has new rig and engine for less money BUT its a shole draft keel. Which is great in the Bahamas but not beating upwind doing the thorny path.

We continue the drive from Annapolis down to Georgia to look at a Jeanneau Gin Fizz. The Same boat model Laura dekker circumnavigated in when she was 16! Though her sailboat was in much better condition when she made her epic voyage.. We have been wanting to do a boat tour of this Gin fizz for a while we had actually placed an offer but in hind sight we are glad we came to look at in person. It was rough and it would have needed a full refit of the living space. It did however come with new rigging, rebuilt engine and new crispy sales. The price? 10k But she will need a lot of work! Footage or trip to Cali to look at two Wauquiez Pretorian 35's. Unfortunately, they did not turn out to be the live aboard sailboat of our dreams. On the way to the Airbnb, we pick up a hitch hiker whom had just come out of the woods from a 3 month long meditation retreat. We dove into deep conversation about the nature of the universe, unity, and how everything is connected. We made the best out of the journey to California and meet up with some good friends that just happened to be out west in their van. We hike the local areas and check out Muir woods. In episode two, Andrea and Logan get a taste of some of the challenges of the boat buying process. BUT, they are also reminded that life doesn't start when you buy a boat, so it's time to enjoy what you have where you are now. A gentle warning to never sign a sailboat contract without seeing the boat first! It can be challenging when boats are selling quick and you want to close fast. Buying a sailboat without seeing it in person is very dangerous. This was 2018 before the pandemic.
