? @Sailing Kawai This week we leave Gocek, a special place in Turkey for us as it's where we purchased Kawai and met some wonderful friends. It's sad to leave but with great winds forecast we would sail to Marmaris then onto Datca where we would explore. The Meltemi blows from the North throughout summer so we look for a window where we can get some good sailing in. The previous day had little wind so we expect small swell and strong winds which makes for great sailing. The winds over both days range from 8 to 28 knots which is perfect and we have fun testing our sailing skills. We anchor off a little town called Aktur, which is 11nm East of Datca. This is a fantastic base for provisioning and has a protected anchorage for when the winds blow from the North. The town has markets that run on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday that are worth a visit. Update We haven't posted for a while as we have had some bad luck. Trace and I both caught Covid and this affected Traces voice which meant no voice-overs. Trace also broke her foot in the last 2 weeks, so we have been focussing on sorting it as it requires surgery. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the last couple years we have sailed to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :) Instagram Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jase_stephe... We are really fortunate to spend another week in stunning Turkey. This week we sail 52nm from Kas Turkey to Gocek to pick up some family and friends. We loved Kas but it's time to head back up the coast. We have 1 month until we need to leave Turkey and we will enter Greece. Our friends Will and Elise are Kiwi's who are working in the UK, they have a small window of time off, so we hope to show them a great time in and around Southern Turkey. They are both keen to learn more about sailing so we use the time to answer as many questions as possible and give them a variety of experiences. After collecting Will and Elise from Gocek we visit 2 larger bays East of Gocek where we swim, laugh and visit a beach bar. Both bays offer clear waters and a great vibe. We also sail into Fethiye where Will and Elise sight see the area. The sailing over the 6 days is great, with a variety of conditions to practice in. With perfect conditions forecast we head to Butterfly Valley and Karacaoren. These both offer some of the clearest water we have ever seen and we enjoy showing our guests. They hike Butterfly Valley while Trace and I enjoy snorkeling the bay. The night ends with a fantastic meal, lots of laughs and table tennis. We also celebrate my birthday with our Turkish friends and enjoy another great night out in Gocek. This week we have a great time exploring two amazing areas on the Southern Turkish Coast. We leave Fethiye and sail down the coast enjoying a consistent 15 knots of wind. We anchor outside the Kas Marina (Setur) in 15m of mud which is great holding. The water is a beautiful blue and our first impressions are positive with colorful flowers lining the water's edge. Kas is a funky town that has a lot of life. There are numerous cafe's, bars and boutiques so we settle in by sampling a local nutella crepe. Like all places we visit, we spend the afternoon exploring the town. Kas is known for it's diving so we snorkel the bay and enjoy the turquoise water. With friends and family arriving in Gocek within a week we head to Kekova. It's a favourite with liveaboards and we can see why with it's large protected anchorages and relaxed vibe. We anchor behind the Simena castle which we explore and is an easy 5 minute dingy to the town. The Simena castle is well preserved and has amazing views of Kekova Island and the large bay. We also decide to try the local ice-cream and buy a beer from the restaurant that let us leave our dingy there. Across from the Simena castle is the sunken city of Kekova. It's only accessible via canoe or boat so we take Kawai across the bay early and float past the ruins. I take the dingy for a closer look at the ruins of Dolchste an ancient Lycian settlement which was partly overtaken by the sea due to an earthquake in the 2nd century. We are really excited to share this video, a beautiful place with so much natural beauty. Butterfly Valley is a bit of a special place because so few people can get to the beach. Only accessible via boat or a steep hike down a cliff face, this paradise was a favorite of ours. We begin our journey from Fethiye in Southern Turkey and leave early in our Hanse 445 sail boat. Our plan is to leave early to get the pick of the anchorage and beat all the tourist boats who arrive from around 11am. It's also important to choose a calm day with favourable wind and swell conditions. The research we had conducted showed many of the tourist boats would land their boats on the left hand side of the bay. When we arrived the right hand side was free, with a perfect spot in front of the swimming enclosure. We dropped in 28m and let out 40m of chain. We spent the next couple of hours swimming and exploring this beautiful area, spotting numerous sea turtles, schools of fish and snorkeling the rocks nearby. We also took the tender out and explored the rocks away from the beach. There is a hike up through Butterfly valley that is worth while. It costs 10TL to enter the valley which takes you through the valley into a canyon with steep walls and 2 waterfalls which cool the entire area. There are some cables drilled into the rocks to assist you to climb higher up the valley which gives you access to better views and the waterfalls. There are 105 butterfly species that call the valley home, but they aren't easy to find. I am fortunate to find 3 different species of butterfly. When I return from my walk the once peaceful Butterfly Valley is filled with noise and tourist boats which changes the feel of the place. I would definitely recommend arriving early and spending the first couple hours of the day soaking up the tranquility. We decide to spend the night at Karacaören Restaurant, which has buoys for sailboats to tie-up to for free if you dine at the restaurant. The water looks similar to Butterfly Valley, a perfect blue with great clarity. The evening is spent dining at the restaurant, taking in the special view and enjoying great company, a perfect day in paradise. @SailingKawai This week we leave the bustling Gocek and sail to Fethiye to shelter from some strong winds that are forecast. It's a great decision as we hold well in mud with 36 knots blowing us around the bay for 2 hours. 3 Must see attractions 1. Lycia
@SailingKawai This week we begin our journey in Marmaris Turkey where we anchor off Marmaris town while waiting for our friends to arrive from Australia. We explore Marmaris before setting sail for the tranquil bay called Ekincik Bay. It's 20nm from Marma
@SailingKawai This week we leave Australia and fly to Turkiye to be reacquainted with our boat Kawai. We have 2 weeks to get her ship shape before we leave our hard stand and are placed into the water. There are many jobs to do, as we receive new batteri
After 2 and a half years in Australia we are back on Kawai in Turkey. It's a huge relief to see Kawai is in great shape and this video is a brief rundown of what we have been up to for the past couple of years. Covid restricted Trace and I to Australia, and we made good use of the time working to fund future sailing adventures. We both get jobs and buy an investment property to allow a little more cash in the budget. This video is short, we hope to begin vlogging fully again soon and bring you videos of our travels, hope you enjoy the video. This week on Kawai, we pull her from the water to get her ready for the winter. We are positioned at Marmaris Yacht marina, where we use the 70 tonne lift to pull Kawai out of the water and place her on a stand. Kawai is hauled out just in time before the winter storms role in which is a tad nerve racking (This video was recorded on the 16th of December 2019). Trace and I prepare the boat for winter as we plan to return to Australia for 4 months to visit family and friends (pre-covid). Cleaning, organising and readying Kawai for winter is new to us, and we go through the many processes of making her ready. We fly home to Australia to see family and friends, unaware of what was to come in the following months/years. We have been so lucky to sail the Mediterranean for over a year, but this week it comes to an end. We finish the season in Turkey, a beautiful country which is so often forgotten or misunderstood. We sail the coast on route for Marmaris where we would lift Kawai and winter her until we return from Australia. We begin by sailing from Didim where we collect our papers from our agent to the picturesque town of Akyarla, where we spend a chilled afternoon enjoying a few beers overlooking the pretty town. We enjoy a traditional Turkish meal at a local restaurant and post a new video while eating (using the restaurant wifi). With some strong winds we head for Ciflik, 88nm from Akyarla and zigzag in between many of the Greek Islands we had previously anchored. It's a bittersweet moment, as it's our last sail of the season but a step closer to seeing family and friends back in Australia. Kawai will be spending her time at Marmaris Yacht Marina, so we anchor outside and sort the paper work before preparing the boat for a lift. We bring down the sails and our sailing comes to an end for a while. This week on Sailing Kawai we continue our journey across the Cyclades on route to Turkey. We leave Mykonos early hoping to get some strong winds pushing us towards our final Greek Island Patmos. Unfortunately the predicted winds (12-30 knots) don't appear and we don't get in much sailing. Our only excitement is when we come across a sleepy whale and a couple of turtles. We reach Patmos on dark and anchor in Merikas Bay. The bay is secluded and like most anchorages at this time of year in the Cyclades we are the only boat. Once anchored we entered the cabin to be greeted by an egg like smell. Unfortunately our starter battery is cooked and we must rush to find a new battery out of season. With a little luck we meet a local who assists us finding a battery and we can check out of Greece. We leave Patmos with a beautiful sunrise and sail to Didim Turkey where we attempt to sign in to the country. We find a local agent who assists us check Kawai in to Turkey and we start exploring this amazing country. Some excitement arises when we get visited by the coast guard. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching :) About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. This week on Kawai we continue our journey across the Cyclades on route to Turkey. We begin by leaving the Island of Paros and heading for Mykonos. With 20 knots blowing from the South, our plan is to head North towards Mykonos and with it being known as the windy Island we plan to use the protected bays on the west of the island as shelter. The sailing is great as we head down wind, with a consistent 20-25 knots. Sailing in winter can be unpredictable, and with 8 days of Southerlies we decide on Mykonos, which is well protected from this direction with 3 large bays. We sail up the channel between Delos and Mykonos. Delos is extremely rocky with no vegetation and no inhabitants. The small island of Delos has one of the most important archaeology sites in Greece. With very few boats still sailing, we get the pick of the anchorages. Mykonos surprises us, and we have an amazing time checking out the sights of this normally bustling island. Dreamy sunsets, Ouzo, welcoming locals and memorable nights out make for a perfect week in Mykonos. 37. Greek Island hopping on our sailboat | Sailing from Milos to Paros | Sailing the Cyclades | Sail
This week on Sailing Kawai we leave the stunning Island of Milos where we had spent some spectacular days in crystal clear waters and head further North East. The weather forecast is for consistent Southerlies so we head for the Greek Island of Sifnos. We spend a night in the idealic town of Vathy, where we enjoy a great anchorage and some beautiful views. We continue sailing towards Paros where we plan to spend some days. Due to the Southerlies, we decide on an anchorage near Naoussa. The sail to Paros is relaxing with winds between 10 - 25 knots. The island is extremely quiet and it feels like we are the only people in the town (November). Naoussa is a typical Cycladic town, with beautiful white buildings, quaint alleyways and an enchanting atmosphere. With the sailing season coming to an end there are few shops open. The cyclades are known to shut down after September so we manage to get a large provision in out of town and decide to sail to Mykonos. We've been excited to share this video for a while, we sail and explore around Milos Island in the Cyclades - Greek Islands. Ana Luisa is the designer Tracey likes, they sent these pieces http://www.analuisa.com/tracey The discount code Tracey10 for 10% off is available for 1 year and during November and December they have 25% and up off, so you can shop for Christmas gifts or any other special occasion and don't forget black Friday weekend for awesome offers as well! That is not an affiliate link, we just actually keep in touch with them and we love the brand. We visit four of the best beaches: Kleftiko, Firiplaka, Tsigrado and Sarakiniko beaches. We arrive in the dark after sailing from the Peloponnese and anchor right out the front of Kleftiko Beach. Jase surprises me with an amazing 10 year wedding anniversary and we spend the morning exploring the crazy rock formations on the tender. We then jump in the irresistible water to see more below the surface. With a very fast storm approaching we are forced to leave this magical place. All good though, as our next stop is another distinctive beach, Firiplaka Beach. The large mountains with their unusually colourful rock faces meet the sand and the perfect blue Aegean Sea and we spend a cruisey afternoon wandering the beaches as the sun sets. Next beach is just around the corner and again we are able to anchor Kawai right out the front of this isolated beach. We tender in to Tsigrado Beach and discover the other way to get to this beach: a couple of precarious ladders perched in the crevice of the cliffs and see why it is so secluded. We are mesmerised by the unique colours and stunningly crystal clear water and of course jump in for a swim. The wind picks up and unfortunately it is time to leave. We sail up the east coast of Milos and choose the anchorage at Pollonia and drop in to this cute Cycladic fishing village for a beer. After a great sail, we reach our last beach, the iconic Sarakiniko Beach. After struggling to anchor amongst a lot of rock, we finally find a nice patch of sand to drop the Mantus anchor and head in to get a closer look at this incredible place. Words don't do this place justice and we hope our video gives you a bit of an idea how incredible and unique Milos Island really is. This week on sailing Kawai, we make an early start in an effort to get to the Diros Caves. We manage to get there right on opening and find an easy place to anchor in a large bay with a lot of sand and close to the entrance of the caves. It is a simple 2 minute tender trip to the shore before our mind is blown with this natural wonder. We take a boat ride through the underground caves, which is eerie but magical. If you visit the southern Peloponnese this is a must see and we'd recommend reading a bit about the history before venturing inside as the guide/boat driver only spoke in Greek. With 45nm still to sail we quickly get back on board. The landscape changes almost immediately and we can tell we are on the way to the Cyclades with a more barren and rocky outlook. We pass the middle cape of the 3 in Southern Peloponnese, Cape Tainaron, before anchoring in the dark at Elafonisi a popular anchorage for sailors waiting to pass the notorious cape Maleas. Luckily we timed our transit around the final cape, Cape Maleas well and it is an easy motor sail past it. Trace waves to the monks at the Hermitage and we are fortunate to get some wind early on our way to Milos and we enjoy some good sailing. Jase catches 2 tuna within 10 minutes of putting out his new lure, unfortunately they are again a little too small and we choose to return them to allow them to make baby tuna. We witness another magical sunset over the water as the horizon is blurred, day turns to night and we continue onwards to our anchorage in Milos. We cannot wait to share our next adventure with you when we arrive in Milos and explore some of the most unique and diverse beaches we have ever seen. This week we sail further south along the coast of Greece, passing the first cape of the Peloponnese on route to Kalamata. We leave the bay of Navarino for our first anchorage in Methoni and it's a ripper, bounded by an historic castle on one side and green farm land on the other. We are one of only 3 yachts in the anchorage when we arrive and are soon the only one, and it feels like we are the only tourists in town. Visiting a family owned and run taverna, Sapientza, we are treated to a traditional home cooked meal made by Grandma which we get to choose from the stove top. With light winds we sail to the nature island of Sapientza for a quick swim and then on to Finakounda where we anchor for the night. A quick trip in to check out the town and have a Greek coffee the next morning before the winds arrive and we are on our way again, this time to an anchorage on the way to Kalamata via the first cape of the Peloponnese. We aren't sure what to expect as it seems 2 very different wind directions are meeting at the cape but it's completely fine and we are treated to some great winds to sail. We attempt to anchor at Koroni however large boulders cover the sea floor and we decide against it and sail on to Petalidi which is a perfect anchorage although a little exposed. The next day we are off early to Kalamata where we need to berth in the marina due to no long term anchorages nearby and we also need to pick up some deliveries and re-stock Kawai. Kalamata is the only place we have been able to find so far this time in Greece to re-fill our Turkish-bought gas bottles which is a relief. Diesel is delivered right to the dock and the 27 euro fee includes unlimited electricity and 4 euros for unlimited water. It's been a long time since Kawai has had a decent wash down so Jase gives her a good bath. Kalamata is famous for it's big fat black olives so we pay a visit to the large local farmer's markets to try them and stock up on fresh fruit and veges. From Kalamata we sail to Krites anchorage for one night and it's a delightful anchorage with crystal clear waters and after being in a marina we are keen for a swim! This week on Kawai we leave the Ionian Island of Zakynthos and sail to the Greece main land. We sail to Katakolon where we catch the train to Olympia, the birth place to the Olympic Games. Trace relives the spirit of the ancient games and beats me in a sprinting race. We then set sail and head further south into the Peloponnese visiting Pylos and Navarino Bay where we check out the old fort of Navarino and one of Greece's iconic beaches, Voidikoilia Beach. During our hike we stumble across Nestor's cave, where Greek God Hermes was said to have hid the 50 cattle he stole from Apollo. We also have a low key celebration for when we first met 19 years ago and have a beer at the local beach bar. This is just the beginning of our sail around the Southern Peloponnese and we have loved it so far. Next week we visit Methoni, Kalamata and many more beautiful locations. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :) Instagram Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jase_stephens1/?hl=en Tracey: https://www.instagram.com/trace_y02/?hl=en Music 1. This week on Kawai we sail in to Vathy on Ithaca where we shelter from the forecasted storms and strong winds. The forecast of storms is correct and we are hit with 50-60 knots for 25-30 minutes. During the mayhem Kawai is struck during the storm by another boat who had anchored too close. Fortunately we have fenders out and there is no damage to Kawai. We leave Ithaca and sail towards Zakynthos. The sailing is hit and miss during the trip as we put the sails up and down constantly. The 40 nm trip is extremely picturesque. The west coast of Zakynthos has striking cliffs, large cave and green hilltops. During the sail Jase also catches a couple of tuna. We reach Shipwreck beach at lunchtime and the bay is spectacular. The water is a perfect blue and amazing swimming conditions. We spend a couple of hours on Kawai, swimming, diving and taking in the scenery. We eventually take the tender ashore and are the last remaining people on the beach. Unfortunately the swell picks up so we leave Ship wreck beach at 8pm and head for Keri in southern Zakynthos. We anchor at midnight and wake to a beautiful calm anchorage. This week on Kawai we leave Preveza and navigate through Lefkas canal. We are the last in line as we enter the 3.5 mile canal and enjoy watching the locals fishing on the banks of the canal. We enjoy a nice downwind sail to our next anchorage, Vlikho Bay. This large bay is full of liveaboards and is well protected from the wind and swell. We use the time to freshen up, enjoy some local hospitality however can't swim due to the large jellyfish population in the bay. The next destination is Ithaca. We get some great winds and sail the 20nm, with the wind slightly ahead of the beam, Kawai loves this wind angle and we love this sail. Ithaca is my favourite Greek Island and has amazing beaches, lush vegetation and some stunning anchorages. We visit Sarakiniko Beach, Filiatro Beach, Tilemakos Beach and Skhoinos Beach. We spend most of our time in Filiatro Bay, enjoy swimming, hiking, exploring and cleaning the local beaches. Unfortunately the beaches have a variety of litter so we spend a couple of hours returning them to their natural beauty. Our time at Filiatro comes to an end as the weather takes a turn for the worse and we sail to the sheltered bay of Vathy, the main harbour in Ithaca. This week on Kawai we leave Central Corfu after some R and R and head for Southern Corfu as we make our way South, next stop Preveza. On our way South we stop at the fishing town of Petriti and we love the crystal clear waters and hospitality of the tavernas. It's hard to leave this place as we love the area and the stress free anchorage in sand. The sail to Preveza is enjoyable as the prevailing Ionian winds arrive on time after midday and we are pushed down the Greek Coastline towards Preveza. The rugged coastline, cards and increasing winds keep us entertained as we plan to enter the channel of Preveza. It's our first time entering the bay and we find it an easy channel to navigate. We anchor off Preveza as a storm approaches creating strong winds and a choppy swell and are fortunate not to drag anchor with our neighbours not so lucky. Strong winds keep us on the boat for 2 days before it finally passes. We explore Preveza and find a traditional Taverna that makes us some great food. Preveza is a sailing mecca with two large, well equiped Marinas, an inviting town quay and a big protected anchorage as well as many chandleries ashore. We are loving the Ionian, we can't wait to keep sailing the Greek Islands in the months ahead.
