In this episode of Sailing Indiana, we face one of the worst anchorages we've ever experienced. After sailing into Tavira, Portugal, we quickly realise it's a nightmare: there's no space to anchor, only private mooring buoys and a strong tidal current that drags us to grounding our sailing boat, Indiana. Just when we think it can't get worse, we sail toward the Guadiana River-only to find ourselves anchored right next to a wildfire. What started as a simple coastal hop, along the Portugal coast, turns into a stressful and unexpected adventure. ? WE'RE ON ORCA WATCH Sailing South in the ORCA HOTSPOT that is the Portugal Coast and Spain Coast. It's RISKY BUSINESS! In this episode, we continue to sail along the coast of Portugal, through Orca infested water. We have to keep to the 20 metre depth contour which brings its own challenges - with swell and inconsistent winds. Join us as we take you along the journey as we navigate these treacherous waters, trying to avoid an Orca attack on our sailboat rudder. Keeping a watchful eye on the horizon! You will see us sail from Sesimbra to Sines -- a cute little town, with a great bay for anchoring. We got to explore the town and even became part of some festivities! If you know what the celebration was, please let us know in the comments. We then head out on a night sail -- lets hope we make it through to the morning! ? We were cautiously sailing along the stunning but unpredictable Portuguese coastline - from Oeiras Marina, past Cabo Espichel, toward Sesimbra - little did we know how unpredictable it was. A 35ft sailboat was suddenly spun in circles by a pod of Orcas, including juveniles, in what appeared to be an unprovoked and intense interaction. The crew could be seen scrambling onboard as the boat is jolted and twisted in the water. What makes this even more chilling? This exact incident happened just an hour after we passed through that same area. We had dropped anchor in Sesimbra when we received the footage of the attack via an Instagram Reel - and couldn't believe how close we came to being involved ourselves. In this video, we show our sail from Oeiras to Sesimbra and share the dramatic footage of the Orca interaction (credited on screen), along with our honest reaction and thoughts about what this means for our planned journey to the Mediterranean. We also point you toward a vital safety resource: Orca.PT. Their Telegram community (over 1,500 sailors strong) shares real-time updates of Orca sightings and interactions along the Iberian coast. We're not affiliated, but it's been a game-changer for us and so many others navigating this route. We want to acknowledge that Orca interactions are a complex and often divisive topic. Our aim with this video is purely to raise awareness and share our experience in the hope it helps others sailing these waters stay informed and prepared. We have deep respect for these intelligent, endangered creatures and in no way support or condone aggression toward them. Stay safe out there guys! Look after yourselves and our wildlife ??? ? So, not ideal when your sailboat is also your full time home! Come along for the ride as we navigate through tricky waters, share some laughs, and soak in the stunning coastal views. "HOW DEEP IS IT?!" Would you take the shallow, rocky path? WE DID? We sailed this part of the GALICIAN COAST, from our secluded island anchorage to busy Baiona. We had an option to squeeze through the shallow and rocky Canal da Porta, in the entrance to Ria Vigo near Baiona. The books and information we'd read advised we only sail through this Ria entrance with local knowledge! Or, in very calm conditions? Well, we thought we'd give it a go! We weren't really enjoying our stay at the small island in the RIA DE AREOSO, along the North West Spanish Galician Coast. So we moved along to SAN VICENTE DO MAR for the night, before sailing on to Baiona. We hope you enjoy this one, it's our final stop along the Galician Coast, so next week we say goodbye to Spain and hello to Portugal. Thanks very much for watching! "WAY TOO SHALLOW!" Would you anchor overnight near rocks, in a shallow spot? WE DID? This part of the GALICIAN COAST is called "Costa da Morte"? Translated, that means "COAST OF DEATH"!! So, here we are, sailing the COAST OF DEATH? Are we in DANGER? You decide! In this episode, we sail from MUROS to a small island in the RIA DE AREOSO, along the North West Spanish Galician Coast. We FINALLY get some decent wind and have a really lovely sail. That's what sailing in Spain should all be about! We are reminded of fellow YouTubers, Sailing Nendez, who unwittingly ran aground when they hit some rocks, JUST where we were going to pass! So, this put us on high alert from the get-go. Sailing puts you in DANGER no matter how skilled you are or prepared your craft. You have to be prepared for anything. So, when our anchorage turned out to be a lot shallower than we'd hoped, we found ourselves in a situation? With a sandbank on one side and rocks on the other? Were we going to be ok? We would be lying if we said things had been easy? But why did we stop filming? First of all, thanks so much for watching our 81st episode and for your continued support! In this episode we pick things up where we left off, in Corme! Corme is a lovely harbour in the Galicia region of Spain (Northwest coast). We motor-sail further south, heading for a beautiful anchorage, in a place called Camariñas. Our windlass stopped working, so we got to work finding the issue and some serious lessons were learnt?!! We then jump into the burning issue, the elephant in the room? WHY HAVEN'T WE POSTED A VIDEO IN THREE MONTHS???? Well, technically we kept filming, or at least we had all the sailing footage from sailing Spain, but we just stopped editing and posting? WHY??? Hopefully in this episode we've done a good job of letting you know what's been going on and what's to come for us and Indiana? But we're waiting in the comments for anything left unsaid, or any further questions we can answer. Thanks very much for watching! In this episode, we struggle to find our confidence again after our PAN-PAN rescue in A Coruna. After remedying the engine and prop issue we decide to finally leave A Coruna and sail further along the Galician Coast of Spain. We wake at 5am hoping to leave, but A Coruna had other ideas for us. We intense fog and zero visibility we had to wait for the weather to clear. With little wind we decided to motor sail, making us feel even more nervous? We finally made our way to Corme, and anchored in a beautiful anchorage next to the little town. They wind picked up on our arrival so, watch as we navigate our first time anchoring in Spanish waters. Corme, was lovely. A quaint little town, with some good shops and restaurants. There is also a beautiful secluded beach, which we walked along in the morning. Finally some calm after the storm. In this episode, we show you what we have been up to since our Pan-Pan and rescue tow into A Coruna, Spain. We have settled into Spanish life, taken to the local town and made the marina home as we are a little stranded here? We recently sailed 400nm from the UK and made our way across the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Following our dramatic rescue, we set to work diagnosing the problems with help from our friend, Guy (thank you Guy!). We also resolved the water intake issue we had sailing across the Bay of Biscay, and got a brand new exhaust pipe. We tried not to flood the boat in the process of removing the old one! What have we done to our poor little Sailboat? After two years of boat renovations, learning how to sail a boat and heading off on our crossing of the Bay of Biscay, we find ourselves in a bit of trouble in Spain... In the last episode you saw us sailing from Gijon, heading for A Coruna, North West Spain. We'd completed our Bay of Biscay Crossing the episode before than. But, disaster struck Indiana... Our engine or prop shaft started making a horrible screeching noise! Not knowing whether continuing would do irreparable damage to our sailboat, or sink it!!, we decided to turn off the motor and call a PAN-PAN for a rescue tow. What began has a pleasant trip with perfect conditions, soon ended in disaster? As we have come to find out, sailing never quite goes to plan! Anyway, we made it safely to A Coruna Marina, by what when wrong? It's time to start investigating!
