The family sailing crew of Element, living aboard a Catana 471 Catamaran depart Zakinthos, Greece from Episode 23, on their way out of the Mediterranean Sea towards the Atlantic Ocean as they continue their journey to sail around the world. The crew make daysails through the Greek Ionian Islands and as they make their way northward towards Albania. Shaun detects a seawater leak coming from an engine hose and we stop in Lefkas to order the new engine part. Rather than stay in a hectic and touristy charter base, we decide to wait for the new part in the beautiful anchorage of Lakka Bay, on the northern end of the Island of Paxos and it quickly becomes one of our family's favourites that we often look back on and talk about. Sailing to Crete can be a challenge from the east with the typically strong prevailing northwest winds and so it would be for the Element crew with winds over 30 knots on the nose at times. During their visit to Cappadocia, they explore an open air museum with Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used for refuge and churches by early Christians. Later that day the crew of Element come across a pottery shop where the girls get a hand at trying traditional pottery making.The following morning, the crew wake up early for a hot air balloon tour of the valley, witnessing the amazing panoramic landscape and the stunning colours with the morning sunrise. In this video, The crew of Element, living aboard a Catana 471 Catamaran, continue to spend their first Winter off-season in the Setur Marina of Finike, Turkey. After their first season of sailing in the Mediterranean, they discover their solar panel charging system is not working properly after just having been replaced, during their initial refit of Element. After some investigation, repairs are needed and valuable lessons are learned. Upon successfully resolving the solar charging issues (at least for the short term), the family crew explores the Lycian and Roman ruins of Myra and seeks out the original chapel of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) in Demre on December 6th, the anniversary of his death. We later take a stroll through the "old town" quarter of Antalya while we process our temporary residence permits. Attempting to get into the holiday spirit, the Finike international cruising community decides they want a taste of Winter by visiting a nearby ski hill at Saklikent. In this video, the crew of Sailing Catamaran Element arrive at the very busy Island of Rodos (Rhodes) Greece and visit the awe inspiring Crusades era castle with an old town World Heritage Site protected within its might walls. We take a hop-on hop-off bus tour around the island visiting the local aquarium, then are offered a free harbour tour from our "submarine" dockside neighbor. About Us: We are a Canadian sailing family of four from Vancouver, Canada. We had the fast paced life, we had good careers, owned the big house, but something was missing?.. We had been sailing for several years on yachts with our local "Lower Mainland Yacht Co-op" (www.lmyc.ca), where Shaun was a volunteer sailing instructor. After chartering in the Caribbean several times, extending our distances further and further on larger and larger yachts, then onto Catamarans, we knew we were ready for a lifestyle change and to spend quality time with our quickly growing girls. In 2015, we purchased "Element" a 2003 Catana 471 (Hull #68) in Marmaris, Turkey and the adventures began to unfold.
