I was hired to transport a 40 year old sailboat from Florida to Texas. Normally I don't take jobs on mainland during the winter, but im trying to save for a wedding, So, im spending the holidays, cruising 1600 miles across the gulf of whatever, thru the gnarliest weather and multiple breakdowns After two days of turning wrenches, and inspecting the boat, we drop her in the water, stock up on groceries and head out. The Atlantic is too rough to head offshore. So our plan is motor south in the intracoastal waterway, then sail thru the keys and start working our way west to Texas. We put a spare belt and keep cruising?. pretty soon the weather deteriorates. We spend the rest of the day battling our way thru storms. We take on fuel in Fort Lauderdale, pack a rapid ditch bag, double check the offshore safety gear we motor out of the channel at port Everglades, to find the Atlantic is still pretty rough, but the boat handles it like a champ. We get a sail up, and start making good speed. But, A few minutes later we get hit with another storm. The weather slowly improves as we head south and the cold front slowly dissipates. The Florida Keys greeted us with rainbows, and the Everglades' waters were smooth as glass. But as we cruised up the west coast of Florida, thick fog began to roll in, I decide drop anchor for the night by the coast. As I raise the radar reflector, and for the fist time in days, I hear silence. The air is thick and cold, my sheets are soaked. As I try to sleep I realize all of the warm days are behind us. at first light we head in to Tampa Bay. The yacht rigger hooked me up with a dock, so big shoutout to The yacht rigger.
