At The End Its The Journey that counts? @Sailing Adventures with Grandad Its been two years of sailing since I left Mallorca and I cant help feeling that there is something especially spiritual and very deep going on. This channel of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle. I departed Palma de Mallorca with my grandson Ishi, his dad my son Peter and Javi my trusted saling companion, when he can. We went East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and then solo sailed the Cyclades. Discovering how lonely I felt sailing on my own so I now sail with frinds or family. On this final chapter # 24 I was joined by my grandson Saxon and for the first 10 days Javi. With no parents. It was fun and memorable for me to get to know Saxon. This story is about playing, sharing, laughing and learning. The playing was mostly Javi, the laughing and sharing was all of us and the learning I think was all of us as well. Saxon however also learned about being a mate on a boat and about how to do so many things. Fast learner, willing and fun companion and leaving me with a memory I will have for the rest of my days. SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD, these 24 episodes are my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht Vayu. The people I travel with, from Mallorca to Greece, the exploration of the Pennepoles and the Cyclades and my reflections on living this adventure. Thanks for allowing this amateur to share these little stories that require an imense effort. Your appreciation means a lot to me. A lifetime sailor, practicing yogi, father of 4, grandad of 7, amateur chef, partner to a wonderful woman and thankful man. I live between Palma de Mallorca, Vayu my sailboat and Los Cabos Mexico. Thanks for coming along. Sailing like life? its in the journey! Thank you; Michael

Ask Moitessier & Cousteau An Aegean Sailing Safari #Porto Heli #Sifnos #Elefonisos @Sailing Adventures with Grandad "For a long time, I believed that life was about searching....but I have come to understand that life is about being". Bernard Moitessier In this episode I took off with two great friends. Jere and Javi and we left Porto Heli, not knowing where we were going. When the wind filled in it took us down the coast of the Penepolese to an amazing village and harbor of Yarakas where we had the best home made spinach pie and I crashed my drone that survived. Then on to amazing Elefonisos, just beautiful in October with almost no people. Then off to Sifnos running into an early fall wind coming from the north that forced us into Milos while Vayu flooded because my cabin hatch was open. Recovering in Milos and a beautiful sail to Sifnos followed by an absolutely peaceful day in "paradise". Over the next few days we completed our 274 mile journey and ended with Vayu in her winter birth at Basimakopoulos Shipyard. Just an amazing 10 days of cruising with great camaraderie and excellent sailing. Its been two years of sailing since I left Mallorca and I cant help feeling that there is something especially spiritual and very deep going on. Its not about traveling or racing. Its not possible to ignore the deeper significance of being at sea and sailing. My question was "What is it about sailing?" I decided to check in with Jaques Cousteau and Bernard Moitissier. Cousteau the most famous oceanographer and Moitissier one of the worlds most famous solo sailors. And in their words I found the answer which I share with you in this episode as I share the pleasure of a varied and exciitng 274 nautical mile voyage from Porto Heli to Elefonisos and on to Sifnos with a couple of other stops on the way. This channel of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle. After the mentioned shakedown, I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and then solo sailed the Cyclades. SEA SICKNESS Managing the Challenge in the Greek Aegean @Sailing Adventures with Grandad A year after taking my partner Isabel on our planned shakedown cruise in Mallorca that became "The Shakedown Cruise from Hell" in Ep3 , we departed for Athens and Pueto Heli in Greece for our second attempt at a romantic cruise aboard Vayu. Ive learned that Sea Sickness is something to take seriously and be managed with care. Its not hard but for a sailor who will sail in any weather its important to STOP take great care should to help those who suffer from sea sickness so they too can enjoy the beauty of cruising. That is all this episode is all about. Enjoy! This channel of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle. After the mentioned shakedown, I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and have been in the Aegean for this whole season of 2023. Solo Sailing the Cyclades Life lessons learned? MILOS Better late than never ! @Sailing Adventures with Grandad Solo sailing the Cyclades, I pushedn my limits. I did not realizen at the time the lessons I would learn from this expereince. Its been a great challenge sailing to 12 Islands. A voyage of learning about my self, more each day about Vayu my sailboat, and in this chapter I share what I learned about life. I share the with your the three principal lessons I learned as we sail from Polyaigos to Milos, where I meet my cousing Cristina and then on to Porto Heli with both cousin Cristina and Cian a new friend who joined as crew from Milos to Porto Heli. The three lessons can be summarized as: The value of pushing your limits in life to learn and grow. The importance of sharing to enrichen the experiences of life. And the value of solitude to let our souls be touched by god. How enriching to just push beyond our comfort zone. And never too late. The challenge of sailing solo in the beautiful Aegean, island to island, is nothing short of magnificent. These are the lessons I decided were the most valuable to me, but if you want my advice ? Whatever your idea of pushing beyond?just do it! This adventure of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle. I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and have been in the Aegean for this whole season of 2023. SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD are my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht Vayu. The people I travel with, the places we go, the times we have and my reflections on living this challenge Ive created for my life. Sharing with you is challenging my very limited abilities as a narrator, editor and photographer but for now I have every intention of trying to improve. A lifetime sailor, practicing yogi, father of 4, grandad of 5 (soon 6), amateur chef, and thankful man. I live between Palma de Mallorca, Vayu my sailboat and Los Cabos Mexico. I share my life now with my beautiful partner Isabel who joins me sailing when she can and when the weather is guaranteed to be nice. This channel was launched at the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion. This war and now the Palestinian catastrophe just goes to show how where you were born, can determine so much. And now the tragedy of Palestine another reminder of the how precious peace and life is. Thanks for coming along. Sailing like life? its all in the journey! Thank you; Michael

The Best FOUR Months to Sail the Cyclades Three Reasons Why Sikinos, Folegandros, Polyaigos @Sailing Adventures with Grandad This is the last vlog of my Solo sail of the Cyclades. Its been a great challenge sailing to 12 Islands. A voyage of learning about my self, more each day about Vayu my sailboat, and in this chapter I share what I learned about, what months to Sail the Cyclades and why. I share the my experience and show you the reasons why as we sail from Ios to Sikinos and then on to Folegandros & Polyaigos. Im feeling quite cheerful as a result of deciding that once I get to Milos I will have company. And that is the story of what Im calling my summer social season. The next few episodes of Sailing Adventures with Grandad. I sailed the Cyclades in May and June and then went back in September and October. During both these periods we dont have the heat of July & August and its actually cool at night and in the mornings. So Bearable Heat is one of my reasons. Then the winds during these months are mostly manageable. You get some meltemis but they are not as frequent or as severe as July & August. And the wind is mostly Perfect. And the final reason is that without the summer crowds, at least the 12 Islands I visited were not crowded, the anchorages were peaceful, the restaurants were not full, it was a delight. The challenge of sailing solo in the beautiful Aegean sea island to island is nothing short of magnificent. But choosing the cooler and less windy and crowded months can really add to your enjoyment. This adventure of Sailing Adventures with Grandad, started after our long Covid battle, desperate to sease life again I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and have been in the Aegean for this whole season of 2023. SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD are my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht Vayu. Naxos & Schinousa Two things to Avoid Sailing the Cyclades @Sailing Adventures with Grandad Solo sailing of the Cyclades I discover more about myself and the world every day. And just because its supposed to be fantastic does not mean it has to be! In this chapter I finally accept the fact that, as much as I enjoy the challenge of sailing solo, I am lonely and I want to share lifes journey. And yes of course, with just enough space for my own time. So I have embarked on looking for a crew as a first "bright idea" to solve this issue. The experience with Cian (the name of my crew lady) and our happy conclusion will come in the next few chapters. And secondly I discovered that the northern MELTEMI winds in the Aegean can drive me crazy. I need to avoid them and recommend you do the same. So hiding from them is my solution and they are well forecasted so that should not be an issue. The challenge of sailing solo in the beautiful Aegean sea island to island is nothing short of magnificent. But Im sure it will be equally good and safer in company. This adventure started after our long Covid battle, desperate to sease life again I departed Palma de Mallorca going East around Sicily, across the Ionian, transiting the Corinth Canal and have been in the Aegean for this whole season of 2023. Paros & Naoussa Bay Solo Sailing the Cyclades I have one encounter and its a revelation... @Sailing Adventures with Grandad Solo sailing of the Cyclades I see something new, feel something different, discover more about myself and the world every day. Sometimes more than I expected or bargained for. In this chapter I share my joy of meeting Antonio and Rafael two fellow travelers, doing some "boring paperwork" in Paros & exploring Paros and Naoussa. A beautiful Island with its typical Cycladic beauty and charm. rEven though I did not want to come I am thrilled that I did. For me perhaps a bit more than the quiet Island I have visited and plan on visiting. But I did enjoy its beauty and vibes , but moree importntly I felt I such joy sharing a day with my fellow sailors that I realize my need to share this journey. Not just on YouTube but with company. So this is the realization that is "more than I bargained for.." and will lead to a change in the way continue. Sharing with you is challenging my very limited abilities as a narrator, editor and photographer but for now I have every intention of continuing. And trying to improve. If you are curious as I am you can never be bored. There is always something else to see, to learn, to study and explore. Now for some weeks sailing solo and exploring the Cyclades Ive decided to finalize this Solo voyage with a few more Islands and then welcome my fellow sailors aboard. Sifnos & Despotiko What a discovery..so UNEXPECTD Solo Sailing the Cyclades @Sailing Adventures with Grandad "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity" Dorothy Parker My solo sailing of the Cyclades is born of my curiosity to learn every day, see something new, feel something different, discover more about myself and the world. Im never bored. All these Cyclades have things in common but are also completely unique. In this chapter I share my joy of running across another X-Yacht 442, a sister ship to Vayu. Im so excited and I feel this tremendous joy of sharing. Then Sifnos is quiet, romantic, a beautiful Island where I want to return but next time with my loving partner. The sail from Sifnos to Antiparos is exhilarating and even a bit frightening and makes me reflect on the risks of sailing solo. Im enjoying life so much I think it would be a shame to loose if to some imprudent accident. And then instead of Antiparos Im drawn by the historic archeological site on Despotikos, so that becomes my project and my joy for this episode. Sharing with you is challenging my abilities as a narrator, editor and photographer but its a challenge that fits perfectly into my desire to always learn something new, about the world or myself. Im thinking two things here. One I want to share with someone this beauty, and solitude is one of the prices I pay for sailing solo. The second question that comes up is that I want more safety. As my Cyclades journey continues I end up addressing these two issues for the future. With curiosity one is never bored. And if you are curious as I am you can never be bored. There is always something else to see, to learn, to study and explore. The challenge of sailing in the beautiful Aegean sea island to island is nothing short of magnificent. This planning of this adventure started late in 2021,after our long Covid battle, desperate to sease life again I departed Palma with my son Peter, grandson Ixmael, and friend Javi. We left Palma de Mallorca, went to Palermo, Sicily. Then they went home and I continues along the North Coast of Sicily around the Aeolians (Lipari Islands) joined by my daughter Alex and her friends. Then they left and I did my first one week solo thru the Straight of Messina and down the East Coast of Sicily. Then again joined by my friend Javi we crossed the Ionian and headed through the Corinth Canal, out into the Aegean. We continued down the coast of the Pennepolese to Porto Heli where Vayu my sailing yacht wintered. This second sailing season has me fighting inertia in Ep 14 and finally deciding to go solo for an exploration of the Cyclades. The challenge of weeks solo sailing in unknown seas is intimidating. But I decide to go anyway and take my first step to Kythnos with unexpected pleasure, challenge and adventure along the way. My journey continued to Syros and Syphnos where I felt that the lesser known Cyclades are more to my liking. So off to Seifos and Antiparos where Im finding greater confidence and more joy as I explore Sifnos and really discover Despotikos instead of Antiparos which was my original goal. SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD are my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht Vayu. The people I travel with, the places we go, the times we have and my reflections on living this challenge that come with this challenge Ive created for my life.. Syros & Seriphos Solo Sailing the Cyclades Ch 2 Ep 16 The exploration of charming and Syros and awe inspiring Seriphos. While inspired by the wind, the sea, and the challenges of sailing solo Im beginning to feel the loneliness that comes with it. This is one challenge I hadn't expected. Sailing the Cyclades Solo Im Curious, its a challenge! Overcoming the doubts and inertia of my comfort zone. "Just GO" isa great challenge.Easier said than done. The challenge of preparing Vayu and myself for a solo cruise of the Cyclades from depart Porto Heli was massive. And my satisfaction at breaking "INERTIA" to do it was massively satisfying. #preparing your sailboat In the end I decided on sailing the Cyclades and on going solo. This is the story of that week of preparation for Vayu and myself! #sailing the Cyclades In June of 2022 last year we left Palma de Mallorca and went to Palermo, Sicily. Why Just TAKE OFF?.You should just GO?.Ep 13 #wintering in Porto Heli #Sailing Peloponnese #Saronic Islands The journey on Vayu my sailboat began knowing that I just wanted to GO. Not really clear on where and why. It was definitely just a strong urge and the sense that sitting around being retired was not enough. Maybe the confinement of Covid also played a part. But in any case I did take off and am happier for it. In June of 2022 we left Palma de Mallorca and went to Palermo, Sicily. Then along the North Coast of Sicily, visiting Cefalu, then the Aeolians (Lipari Islands) and then down the East Coast of Sicily (Syracuse, Taormina and Messina) and finally across the Ionian through the Corinth Canal and into the Aegean. With over 1000 Greek Islands before us. Sailing in Greece is amazingly beautiful and in Ep 12 , we visit the Saronic Islands, and I delve into the reasons that I love sailing Greece. This next season will be dedicated to exploring Greece and the different Island Groups. Also with friends and family and probably sometimes on my own even though Ive found I prefer company. In this episode I reflect on what Ive learned and why I believe that if you can you should just take off. The people I have met and shared with, the places Ive seen, and the experieces Ive had are all so enriching. Staying at home is comfortable but not usually stimulating and enriching, and there is a world of places and people that stimulate not only my thoughts and couriosity but my emotions. While sailing from place to place I feel so alive and excited about what the next day holds I can hardly contain my excitement. No two days are the same and it just makes me love life all the more. In SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD, you will find the amateur creations of my first season of travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht. The people I travel with, the places we go, the times we have and my reflections of all the wonders I experience every day. Why Sail Greece?.Five Good Reasons..and ONE more ?.Ep 12 Coming to Greece from Sicily across the Ionian and entering through the Gulf of Corinth and the Corinth Canal was culturaly and historically enlightening. The old city of Corinth was in fact one of the great hubs of Ancient Greece. In this episode we leave the Corinth Canal and decide how to explore the over 1,000 Islands spread before us in the Aegean Sea. As there 5 of Greece's 6 Island groups in the Aegean, we decide to take one group at a time beginning with the Saronic Islands which is the first goup we find upon exiting the Canal. We sail down the Eastern Coast of the Pennepolese bouncing between the Islands of the Saronic and the mainland discovering during this first taste of the Greek Islands of the Agean why this is such a great place to visit and especially sail. In SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD, I my amateur creations of my travels and experiences on Vayu my 44 ft X-yacht. Transiting the Corinth Canal?hub of an ancient world?Ep 11 As we approach the Corinth Canal we are drawn from the Ionian on the Western side of the Canal to the Aegean on the Eastern Side. The transit is only half an hour but the history of the place takes us back 3000 years to Ancient Corinth. In this episode we leave Nafpaktos, that city of the Battle of Lepanto of 1571 and Don Quixote! We sail cross the Gulf of Corinth and take and easy and enlightening transit through the Corinth Canal with reflections of the amazing history of this crossroads of the ancient world. Ancient Corinth became one of the worlds most important trading centres at that time. The Greeks and then the Romans who ruled this magnificently rich city worshiped a pantheon of Gods from Apollo, to Athena, Poseidon and many more. The crossing of the Isthmus of Corinth was so important that in the early years of the first century AD the Roman Emperors dreamt of digging a canal to cross the Isthmus. Sailing around the Penepolese was so dangerous for the ships of the time, that for centuries ships were dragged across for a fee to avoid having to round the Penepolese. The fees chaged for this crossing adn the trade it attracted all made Corinth a wealthy and bustling city. And then in that first century AD the Apostle Paul came founding the first Church of Corinth that would bring Christianity to slowly replace the worship of the ancient Gods. This Episode is a reflection of this history as we transit the Canal and enter the Aegean with all the Islands of Greece laid out before us. Traveling by sailboat can be many things. Beautiful without a doubt, challenging with unwelcome surprises, and also wonderfully enlightening. Coming to Greece from the Ionian and entering through the Corinth is definitely enlightening. Historically fascinating. In the next episode its the beauty of the East Coast of the Penepolese. To Greece by the Northern Route?@Sailing Adventures with Grandad In this episode we enter Greece by the Northern route across the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth on our way to the Corinth Canal. There are few boats in mid summer and its gorgeous. We stop in the seaside town of Nafpaktos where the Battle of Lepanto took place in 1571 and there discover Don Quijote. In the historical Battle of Lepanto, the fleet of the Catholic Alliance defeated the Ottoman Naval fleet and the author of Don Quijote, Miguel de Cervantes, lost the use of his left arm. He would go on to fight many more battles for God and Country before he would pen the first modern novel of Don Quijote de La Mancha. Don Quijote is the story of a country gentleman who assuming the name Don Quijote becomes a night errant commited with soul and passion to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. He heads off into the countryside, and there lives one absurdly heroic adventure after another. Don Quijote is considered the first modern novel that has inpired art and literature for centuries from Shakespeare & Dostoyevsky, to Kafka, Picasso & Dali, and more recently the musical Man of La Mancha with 2328 performances and 5 tony awards. Our arrival in Greece and visit to Nafpaktos turned out to be a gorgeous and exciting welcome to a varied and historic Greece.
