We then head south to Osimo for a wine pairing as rich as the Adriatic coastline: Umani Ronchi’s “Pelago” 2019 Marche Rosso IGT, a 92-point masterpiece born of marine terroir, crafted by Italy’s boldest winemaking family. Also in this episode: a deep dive into the performance and safety advantages of spreader-less rigs on modern catamarans, plus an art segment exploring Anselmo Bucci’s haunting 1940 painting Sommergibili alla Spezia, where fauvism meets fascist Italy’s naval power. If you're in manufacturing, REDUxEngineering helps $20M–$250M North American and European companies cut part and subassembly costs by 20–50%—with no upfront risk. This week on Naval Gazing at Camp David, we’re swapping Mediterranean breezes for Brittany squalls as we explore the bold ORC 52.2, direct from the famed Lorient yards of Marsaudon Composites. From full specs and pricing to a tour through her sailing soul (“What would Sylvia say?”), we benchmark this future cruiser against her most stylish rivals. But that’s not all—join us for a taste of Le Vignoble de Rhuys – Dantelezh Chenin Blanc 2023, a crisp, coastal wine crafted from organic vines planted on oyster shell-rich soils. Add a splash of Claude Monet’s windswept Port-Goulphar, Belle-Île (1887), and you’ve got a perfect maritime trio of yacht, wine, and art. In this week’s Naval Gazing segment, we discover ISOTEAK—the synthetic teak that shrugs off red wine and salt spray while looking like freshly sanded Burmese teak. Wind, wine, art, and innovation—sail into 30 minutes of culture, craftsmanship, and catamaran obsession. #ORC52 #MarsaudonComposites #NavalGazing #CatamaranReview #BluewaterCruising #YachtLife #MultihullMadness #FrenchWine #BrittanySailing #OutremerYachts #BalanceCatamarans #YachtComparison #LuxurySailing #Monet #ClaudeMonet #Impressionism #SailingArt #BoatTour #SailingFrance #ModernCatamaran #CheninBlanc #OrganicWine #ISOTEAK #SyntheticTeak #TeakDecking #WinePairing #VineyardViews #CruisingTech #SailingCulture #NavalInnovation

Naval Gazing at Camp David returns with a Mediterranean edition centred on the new Outremer 48 catamaran, built in La Grande-Motte, France. Host Dave leads viewers through a five-part agenda: a head-to-head specification, pricing and layout comparison with three rival models; a full onboard tour assessed by the ever-opinionated “What would Sylvia say?” litmus; a technology spotlight; a scan of 3- to 5-year-old brokerage listings; and finally the trademark “Dave Score” leaderboard update. En-route, the episode weaves culture into seamanship by pairing the yacht with Mas Bruguière’s “La Grenadière” 2020, a Syrah-driven Pic Saint-Loup red whose centuries-old vineyard straddles limestone scree and clay-marl soils, and with Paul Signac’s 1907 pointillist canvas Entering the Port of Marseille, celebrating the region’s maritime energy. The Naval Gazing tech segment spotlights smart variable-speed marine HVAC systems from Webasto and Dometic, plus desiccant dehumidifiers like the DryBoat 12 that banish humidity, noise and excess power draw—essential comforts for long-term live-aboards. Dave also slips in a call for referrals to REDUx Engineering, his contingency-based consultancy that slashes component costs for $20-250 million manufacturers. Waves, wine, art and ideas fuse into a brisk thirty-minute escape, tracing a flight path from Vancouver to Cape Town’s Balance 464 yard and onward to the sunny French Med. Naval Gazing at Camp David heads back to South Africa this week to spotlight the all-new Balance 464 catamaran. After briefly revisiting last week’s Leopard 46 build by Robertson & Caine, the episode moves east to Balance Catamarans’ Paarden Eiland yard. Viewers are guided through a detailed breakdown of the 464’s specs, pricing, and interior layout, benchmarked against three comparable vessels. Throughout the tour, the host playfully asks, “What would Sylvia say?” as a touchstone for liveaboard comfort. Interlaced with yacht analysis is the signature “Naval Gaze” segment, featuring the HP GENIUS drinking water dispenser—an onboard ultrafiltration system that delivers purified chilled, room-temperature, or sparkling water at the tap. The episode then surveys the used-market prices for three- to five-year-old catamarans before culminating in the bespoke “Dave Score,” ranking the Balance 464 alongside all previously reviewed yachts. Cultural context comes from a wine pairing and art spotlight: Klein Constantia Estate Red 2015, a Bordeaux-style blend from one of the world’s top vineyards, and a profile of Peter Clarke’s “Goat Herd” painting. Finally, the host pivots to a brief REDUxEngineering referral pitch, explaining how his contingency-based cost-reduction services help SMEs slash part costs by up to 50%—and inviting viewers to subscribe and connect for referrals. #Balance464 #BalanceCatamarans #CatamaranReview #YachtReview #NavalGazing #CampDavidYachts #Leopard46 #RobertsonAndCaine #KleinConstantia #SouthAfricaYachts #YachtSpecs #BoatTour #SylviaSays #DaveScore #UsedCatamarans #WinePairing #ArtOfTheRegion #PeterClarke #GoatHerd #HPGENIUS #WaterDispenser #MarineTech #BoatLife #SailingCulture #SubscribeNow #REDUxEngineering #CostReduction #OffshoreSourcing #SMEEngineering #ReferralProgram

Experience the elegance of the Leopard 46 in this week’s episode of Naval Gazing at Camp David. We journey from Vancouver across the Pacific to China’s Hudson Yacht Group yards, then westward to Robertson & Caine in South Africa to explore the Leopard 46’s sleek design, robust specs, and competitive pricing. Our three-part review kicks off with an in-depth comparison of layout and performance against three similar catamarans. Next, we playfully ask, “What would Sylvia say?” as we tour the vessel’s luxurious amenities. In our Naval Gazing segment, we spotlight cutting-edge marine technology—Crestron’s new Marine OS and Lutron’s HomeWorks QSX—and test the SailForce™ Smart Electric Winch Conversion Kit by Ewincher. This ingenious retrofit boosts live-aboard comfort with effortless sail handling, variable speeds, tension sensing, and energy-efficient operation—all without replacing existing winches. We then dip into the used market to gauge 3–5-year-old Leopard comparables before awarding our proprietary “Dave Score,” positioning the Leopard 46 against past reviews. To immerse viewers in South African culture, we sip Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve 2021, a Bordeaux-style blend renowned for its dark fruit, spice notes, and aging potential, and admire Irma Stern’s 1931 masterpiece, “Fishing Boats on the Beach.” These regional pairings celebrate the craftsmanship and heritage behind each yacht. Between waves, wine, art, and innovation, this 30-minute voyage promises inspiration for sailors and enthusiasts alike. Don’t forget to subscribe, and if you know manufacturers seeking cost-down solutions, send referrals to REDUxEngineering—where design for manufacturing meets offshore sourcing, all on a contingency basis. This exceptional organic wine is known for its rich flavors of sour cherry, cassis, and tart cranberry, earning a stellar 93 points from The Wine Advocate. A true reflection of its Monforte d’Alba roots! • Art of the Region: We feature Chapeau! (2024), an exquisite acrylic-on-linen painting by Claire Denarie-Soffiettis. This vibrant piece captures the spirit of adventure and creativity, much like the yachts we love. It is a softer and sweeter spirit than the more popular London Dry style and ideal for drinking straight. Jonge refers to the more modern, lighter type of Genever. Naval Gazing Segment SeaDrive pods are torpedo type pods, profiled and made entirely of bronze, a material that is not very sensitive to electrolysis issues. SeaDrive pods are able to make a 240° turn in order to offer, in hydro generation mode, the best possible performance on sailboats. This interesting feature allows these pods to be equipped, when mounted on sailboats, with folding propellers, propellers that offer a very limited drag in pure sailing, but that, turned 180°, optimize the hydro generation. A hydro generation that reaches 4000 W at 13.5 knots, a very respectable figure for a pod of 7.5 kW (comparable to that of a saildrive Servoprop 15 kW, twice as powerful) and which suggests extraordinary performance of the 15 kW version. In terms of maneuverability, the steerable pod combined with a joystick offers possibilities unknown to a single engine, sailboat, or motorboat, allowing it to turn in circles on the spot, as would a twin engine with one of its engines engaged forward and the other aft. This week, we’re embarking on an exciting journey to South Africa to explore the future of yachting with the incredible new Voyage 510 catamaran. I’m your host, David Orton, and today, we’ll dive deep into the specifications, pricing, and layout of this marvel of engineering, comparing it with three similar new vessels. We’ll also ask, “What would Sylvia say?” as we take a full tour, uncovering innovations that make life aboard easier, and look at the used market for 3–5-year-old comparables. Finally, we’ll give it a “Dave Score” and see how it stacks up against our previously reviewed yachts. From high above Vancouver, we head southwest, circling the globe to the eastern shores of Australia and the home of last week’s yacht, the spectacular CURE 55. Then, we travel further west to the southern tip of Africa, to the esteemed yards of Voyage Yachts in Cape Town. Our journey doesn’t end there, as we then hop northeast to the vineyards of this week’s featured wine of the region, the BOLAND CELLAR’s Cappupino Ccinotage (Capoopeeno Cheenotajj) Coffee-style Pinotage. A Sip of South Africa The Boland Cellar’s Cappupino Ccinotage is a unique and proudly South African innovation. This wine masterfully combines the characteristic Pinotage fruit flavors with the rich layers of coffee and chocolate, creating a truly delightful experience. Sourced from mid-season ripening vineyards, the grapes produce a balanced, ripe fruit that leads to a smooth and lingering finish, perfect for pairing with barbequed meats like lamb chops and boerewors sausage. Naval Gazing Segment Two common concerns for world cruisers are being boarded at night and anchor dragging. Thankfully, there are solutions for both. Radar guard zones from Garmin and Simrad can alert you to approaching threats before they board. VisionAnchor S, the latest smart anchoring buoy, accurately tracks your anchor’s position with precision, reducing false alarms and providing peace of mind. Art of the Region We’ll also appreciate the cultural richness of South Africa with a beautiful acrylic on canvas painting by artists Alda & Sylvain Bikindou, depicting vibrant township life.
