After making landfall in Australia, we did a quick haulout near Brisbane to get the boat back into shape after crossing the entire Pacific Ocean. We then set out to cruise down the east coast of the continent, enjoying the natural beauty and great sailing conditions as we made progress toward our next goal of reaching Sydney. The ketch Julia was designed by William Atkin and built in British Columbia in 1960. She is a traditionally built wooden boat, planked in Doug Fir on oak frames. We set out from New Caledonia to cover the final stretch of water before we will have truly sailed across the entire Pacific Ocean. Conditions were a bit rough, with 20-30 knots and 3m swells directly on the beam most of the way. The stiff breeze meant fast sailing and we made landfall in Brisbane, Australia after six days. We spent several weeks cruising the lagoon of New Caledonia while waiting for a weather window to complete the offshore passage to Australia. The contrast between the big city of Noumea and the pristine coral reefs and beautiful nature were only seperated by a short day sail. With it's huge lagoon inside the protecting reef, New Caledonia has excellent cruising in calm waters. We set out on an ocean passage across the western pacific from Fiji to New Caledonia, about 700 nautical miles. This passage had some great sailing, and some scary moments as a severe squall passed over us in the night and kept the boat pinned down on her side until we could reduce sail. Overall this was one of our best passages yet, seven days spent exploring the beauty of the open ocean. Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built in 1960 in Desolation Sound in British Columbia to William Atkin's Ingrid design. She is a Pacific ocean veteran, with many blue water miles under her keel. Setting sail in our classic wooden boat, we cross nearly the entire breadth of Fiji to cruise in the Yasawa Islands. Leaving the lush forested island of Makogai, we sail the famous Bligh Waters to the drier leeward side of the Island group. In the Yasawa and Mamanuka islands we find friendly villages and spectacular coral reefs. With the seasons changing, we start to think about another big ocean passage, looking to find safer latitudes to ride out the hurricane season. We sailed Julia upwind to Fiji's remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu's Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves to explore. It is a dinghy sailing paradise. After an overnight passage to the seldom visited island of Makogai, we toured an abandoned leprosy quarantine station and a giant clam hatchery. Fiji's natural beauty and welcoming people have impressed us at every encounter. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. After the two week ocean passage to Fiji, we settle in to the little town of Savusavu. The boat needed some repairs after the long crossing, and then we explore the many wonders of Fiji, from waterfalls and sugar cane to chocolate and kava root. Setting sail for Viani Bay, we had a rough upwind bash, but eventually made it on the second try. We found a dive resort with free moorings on Taveuni, and enjoyed the easy life for a few days. After restocking with fresh produce, we set out on the overnight sail to the beautiful Lau group. Julia is an Atkin designed Ingrid ketch, built in 1960 in British Columbia. After waiting for a weather window, we set sail from French Polynesia for an 1800 nautical mile passage to Fiji. This stretch of ocean is notoriously squally and unpredictable. We experienced variable winds and some significant swell rolling in from systems in the southern ocean. After a successful voyage, we made landfall in the beautiful country of Fiji. Our boat Julia is an Atkin designed Ingrid ketch. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of fir and cedar on an oak frame in 1960. We continued sailing westward through the Society Islands. In peaceful Taha'a we rode the tidal currents over a beautiful coral reef. A perfect crossing under full sail brought us to Bora Bora, where we swam with sharks and rays before climbing the central mountain to take in the spectacular views of the island and it's barrier reef. As the days on our traveler's visa became scarce, we checked out of French Polynesia and watched the weather for a big ocean passage, to the far end of the Pacific. Our boat Julia is a classic wooden sailboat, built in 1960 in British Columbia to the Ingrid design by William Atkin. She may be a vintage classic boat, but she is still a great blue water cruising vessel, out enjoying the world's oceans. We left the Tuomotus on a 240 nautical mile passage to Mo'orea in the Society Islands. These islands are like a geologic combination of the towering Marquesas and the coral ribbons of the Tuomotus. After a brief visit to Tahiti to pick up additional crew, we explored the ancient ruins and towering views of Mo'orea before another 80 mile passage to the lush island of Huahine. Though the Marquesas Islands had captivated us with their beauty, it was time to set sail on the 500 nautical mile passage to the Tuomotus. When we arrived we found islands that were different from the Marquesas in nearly every way. Turquoise lagoons lined by white sand beaches awaited us, and we found beautiful coral reefs surrounding the palm fringed islets. Our wildest cruising dreams have been realized as we sail our wooden Ingrid Ketch to the Bay of Virgins in Fatu Hiva. This spectacular island has to be one of the most beautiful in the entire world. Far off the beaten path, the people of Fatu Hiva live peaceful lives on their garden island. We were welcomed into thier homes, enjoying the local cuisine and even helping to harvest fruit from a jungle farm. We had gentle sailing between islands, vising Tahuata, the smallest inhabited island of the Marquesas, before ending up at Atuona to re-provision. With stunningly beautiful anchorages seperated by short day sails, generous local people, and unspoiled sea life, this will certainly be one of our favorite cruising desitnations anywhere. We cruised our classic wooden sailboat Julia to many spectacular anchorages on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. This is south pacific sailing as we have always dreamed it would be. We set sail on an ocean passage from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching the fabled south sea islands. Cruising the South Pacific is on the bucket list for any sailor, and completing this passage has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever done. We left Mazatlan on March 23rd, and arrived at Nuku Hiva on April 16th, totalling 24 days and 9 hours at sea. We covered around 2900 nautical miles, used less than half our water and a fourth of our fuel. We motored 35 hours and each of us stood 73 four hour watches. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of doug fir planking on oak frames. The length on deck is 37.5 ft and the waterline is 30 ft. She handled the open ocean brilliantly, it was obvious that this was exactly the type of sailing she was built for. Follow our voyage aboard Julia, a traditionally built wooden sailboat, as we cross the Sea of Cortez and head east to the mainland side for a haul-out in Guaymas. The journey continues south along the coast to the vibrant city of Mazatlan where we explore the town and make final provisions for our Pacific Ocean crossing west, our biggest adventure yet. We continued our voyage up the Gulf of California, stopping at the beautiful crescent shaped harbor on Isla San Francisco before sailing north to Puerto Escondido and the Loreto National Marine Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of beautiful island anchorages, an abandoned salt mining town, and some of the best panaramic views of our cruise so far. We sailed past breaching whales and pods of dolphins, the rich life in the sea contrasting to the desert ruggedness on land. After so much time on the sea, we also headed inland to see a historic mission high in the mountains at San Javier. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat, planked in fir on oak frames. She was launched in 1960, and is still a great boat for cruising the world's oceans! We sailed around Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez. There were some challenging upwind miles before reaching the cruising grounds around the lovely town of La Paz. For several weeks, we sailed the beautiful desert islands of Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida. This part of the Gulf of California has rugged landscapes, ancient cactus groves, and rich wildlife. We have crossed the border to cruise the rugged and beautiful outside coast of Mexico's Baja Penninsula. From the large city of Ensenada, to the extremely remote Islas San Benito we found many stunning vistas, rich wildlife, and excellent sailing. A perfect weather window allowed us to make the last leg into Cabo San Lucas in one long sail from the little village of Abreojos. An ocean passage that began in the frigid waters of San Diego ended in the bathwater warm tropics of the entrance to the Sea of Cortez. Julia is a traditional wooden boat. She was built of cedar, fir, and oak in Desolation Sound in 1960 to Atkin's Ingrid design. She is out to prove that classic yachts are well suited to bluewater cruising, and to have lots of excellent sailing along the way! We left San Francisco Bay to continue our passage down the US West Coast, cruising the Channel Islands on our way. From remote and rugged San Miguel Island, to the charming town on Avalon on Catalina Island, we were continually surprised by how great the cruising was on these desert California islands. Our dream of sailing offshore in our wooden Ingrid ketch has come true. We sailed down the US West Coast to San Francisco Bay, with stops in Newport, Coos Bay, Eureka, and Drake's Bay.
