10 Day Liveaboard in The Last Paradise. Raja Ampat A 10 day liveaboard in Raja Ampat will offer you around 30-32 dives in total. During these 10 days you will most likely visit Misool (South Raja Ampat) and Central Raja Ampat. The dive site around Misool are quite different than the dive sites in Central Raja Ampat. They tend to be more vertical sites. Very steep slopes and walls. Because of this topography it is more easy to navigate the sites and to stay out of any strong current that might be present during your dive. Yes, there are very strong currents at times. Especially during new, and full moon. So if your Liveaboard trip is planned during these times, be mentally prepared for strong current and make sure you packed the correct fins. Even though you are easily able to hide from the currents in Misool, I would encourage everyone to embrace them. In these currents is where you will find the most fish and fish action. "No current, no life" as they say here in Indonesia. In Central Raja Ampat the topography of the dive sites are gentle slopes with stunning hard coral in the shallow reefs. Here you will also most likely encounter very big schools of fish. Unfortunately, currently (late 2023 to early 2024) there is mass coral bleaching happening in the Dampier Straights. From my personal experience, the water temperature during the early part of the 2023 season was way too warm. Up to 32 deg celsius at times. That's almost 90 deg Fahrenheit! The beginning of 2024, myself and the crew I work with have noticed a slight drop in water temperature. So hopefully that will continue and the coral will start to recover at some point. Witnessing underwater hunting in Raja Ampat This dive site has a few different names ... Puri Pinnacle, Anti Chovi and Grouper Net. There might even be a few more For a few months every year, his dive site in Misool, Raja Ampat is immersed by huge school of anchovies. In years before 2024, I personally witness these schools being hunted by schools of Mobula Rays. Unfortunately in 2024, we had only a few brief encounters with the hunting Mobulas Ray. But there are still mad other predators that come for the anchovy feasting. And seeing theses large school of anchovies being chased around this dive site is something special. Liveaboard. 12 Day crossing to Raja Ampat Early September 2024, I did a 12 day Liveaboard crossing from the Lembeh Straights, passing by Bunaken, Banka Island and Halmahera to finish the last few days in Raja Ampat. On our first attempt to cross from Sulawesi towards Halmahera we had to turn back due to very strong winds and big waves. For the next two and a half days we were diving at Bunker and Banka Island again, while we waited for the wind to calm down and the big waves to pass. Finally, after almost 3 days, we could finally do the crossing to Halmahera. Due to this delay we had to unfortunately ship our dives at Tifore, known for its gigantic schools of Barracudas and Jackfish. After a couple of days at Halmahera we did our final crossing to Raja Ampat for a few days of diving there. Overall, it was a very exciting Liveaboard crossing with amazing and diverse dive sites. I highly recommend this crossing to any adventure seeking scuba diver. These crossing between Raja Ampat and Lembeh only happens twice a year are are done by very few liveaboards. Drift dive. Kerou Channel Dive Site in Raja Ampat Kerou Channel Dive Site can an exhilarating joy ride if you get the tides right. Although the wall section on this site is short, the sloping reef of the rest of the site is beautiful with amazing sponges of all shapes, sizes and color. Marine life is abundant, including macro life, if you are able to pause for a moment in the current. On a side note, if you are on liveaboard in the area, during your service interval, keep an eye out for the black tip reef sharks that will circle your boat. Colourful coral ledges. Wedding Cake Dive Site in Misool Wedding Cake dive site is also known as Layer Cake. When you see the Eastern side of this dive site, you'll notice all the different layer formations as the wall stretches down to below 30m. I guess that's where it gets its name from. It's a very diverse dive site with many different slopes and walls to explore with the Eastern side being more colourful and way more abundance of corals. Don't discard the Western side though. Although it's not as colourful, there any many different marine species one can find among the rubble. The current can get very strong here, but at least there will be many place to take shelter due to the shape of the dive site. In the right season, Wedding Cake is filled with schools of small fish being hunted. Everyone enjoys this place. Sawandarek dive site on Mansuar Island Sawandarek is an incredibly fun dive site. There is so much to see here. There are even a lot of coral restoration being done on some of the slopes. As fas as marine life is concerned, Sawandarek has a huge amount of life. From schooling snappers in the deep, along with a small school of sweetlips, to friendly batfish, turtles and even giant sweetlips. There are even one of the biggest giant clams in all of central Raja Ampat one can see here. The schooling jack fish, that are not shy of divers is a pure joy to find. Usually they hang out in relative shallow water, not far from the jetty. And if you approach them slowly, they might even circle around you. Stunning Reef in Misool. Nudi Rock Dive Site It's easy to see why this site is called Nudibranch Rock. Just look at the profile of the island. Luckily there are also nudibranchs to be found under water. This dive site is very diverse and marine life can be found everywhere. In the deep water there are often barracudas or Bump-head Parrot fish. Sometimes even big stingrays in the sand. In the more shallow water, there are of course all the beautiful soft coral and all the marine life that make these areas their home. Boo Window is in south Raja Ampat, also known as Misool. It's quite easy to see where this dive site gets its name, if you look at the map and the dive site itself. Raja Ampat Dive Site. Algue Patch at South Batanta Algue Path is a dive site South of Batanta Island. This site was our last dive site of our Liveaboard trip (on our way back to Sorong) in Raja Ampat, including Misool. The site has a gentle slope with some stones and different type of algue. Ideal for muck diving. Unfortunately, with my GoPro I could not video most of the critters that can be found here, but there are many different type of Nudibranchs, Ghost Pipefish, Octopus and so many more. One thing I particular enjoy on this site was the Blue Flasher Wrasse. Because they move so fast are are quite shy, it's almost impossible to get any video of them. I was told, later the season, is usually when the Rhinopias and Frog Fish make their appearance here... Maybe next time. Japanese Wreck. Amed dive site. Bali A very popular site for beginner free divers and snorkelers. This 20 meters long ship ended underwater only a few meters from the shore. It's an easy access dive site and the depth ranges from 3 - 15 meters. The wreck is covered in soft and hard coral and many marine animals have made this their home. Just behind the wreck is probably the most colourful and healthiest reef on Amed. Big predators hang around the outskirts, attracted by the swarms of tiny fish at the wreck. There can be occasional mild to strong current. Not to forget the few species of pigmy seahorses that can be found at Mioskon dive site. From Raja Ampat we moved on to Halmahera to see impressive coral cover walls and the famous large school of barracudas. After a few days exploring there, we moved on to Bangka Island to see even more beautiful soft coral reefs with an abundance of marine life. The last couple of days we spend in the Lembeh straits for world class muck diving. Nusa Penida and Lembongan Dive Sites. Highlights Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida offer world class scuba diving for beginner and experienced scuba divers. Manta Rays can be seen here all year round. Even snorkelers can enjoy a boat ride and the opportunity to see these magnificent marine animals. From August to November scuba divers can also expect to see the famous Mola-Mola (Oceanic Sunfish). Most spots are quite shallow because that's where you'll find most colours. There are however a few deeper spots on Tulamben I have included in this video.
