How we went from one big (but quite straight forward) project, to a complete nightmare in just a year. This is the full story of what actually happened with our failed new epoxy treatment that resulted in blisters all over the boat and spending 11 weeks redoing the job. The short story is that we redid our epoxy treatment because we were changing antifouling system to CopperCoat. We choose the West System Barrier Coat as the new epoxy treatment and, for reasons still not clear, it resulted in basically it just falling of the boat in big chunks. There have been many theories as to what happened and why, please look at the full video for a complete understanding of the process and help we got in figuring things out and what the final conclusions where. How about that, the very first video clips we ever recorded! Total newbies in the world of filming, just trying to document the process of having a new boat and getting her ready for circumnavigation. An unbelievable ending and some more boat work! With the winter cover picked up, the only thing left is to get it in place. Easier said than done as mother nature throws some nasty weather our way. But we work against it, and in the end we both get our watermaker out of the boat (very good as this should not freeze) and the cover on. But just as we are about to pack up, a get ready to leave Linnea for Christmas we get a surprise we had not expected.. And it's not a very nice one! Isn't this just typical boat life? You solve one problem, just to find a bunch more? The winter cover is starting to take place, with the scaffold being fitted and the template being made. And as we are soon entering the month of November, and the nights are getting colder we start to empty the boat of everything that could potentially freeze. Overestimating our capabilities, and underestimating the amount of stuff we have filled the boat with - we beleive we can do it in one day. After filling up both the car, and the trailer we borrowed for the day, we quickly realise that we were totally off when planning for this. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.. Welcome aboard as we continue with winterising our boat Linnea. Even though we have had her since 2019, this is the first winter where we will leave her up on land. Previously we have spent our winters either living onboard, continue to sail even in the Swedish winter months or been sailing in the warmth of Caribbean. Meaning, not much need for winterising. But as always, we do our research and learn as we go! Hope you like the glimpse of looking into what it's like taking a boat back from a 2,5 year sailing adventure. Fair winds! Welcome back! We are in the middle of preparing Linnea for the winter that is fast approaching. She needs to be emptied of all the stuff we have filled her with during our 4,5 years as livaboards, hauled out of the water and prepared to handle the coming months. Welcome back to a new episode! We continue our journey in Norway as we sail south, getting closer to Sweden. But what looked like a great day for sailing turned into something else.. After months of really stressful sailing, with weather going back and forth all the time - this really tests our patience. And as Marcus says, we don't cope with this as well as we used to... Cruising really is ups and downs, just like anything else in life - and if we were just to catch the really good stuff on camera we wouldn't be very true to the lifestyle we have chosen. Jump onboard and sail with us in Norway! After some hectic weeks we have made it to Norway, sailing from Iceland to the Faroes and Shetland and then completing our last offshore passage to Norway. This is the last country that will be new to us, and here are our first impressions. In this episode we sail between Skrudeneshavn and Kvitsøy, and for the first time in what feels like a too long time - we just have a short day hope and feel a bit happy to be out at sea. ? Sunday Boat Tip [13/52] ? These are the apps we use to make our anchor life a little bit smoother and get a little piece of mind at night! Do you use these too or do you have other favorites that should be added to the list, let us know in the comments! ?? Navionics The app which we use for navigation. When it's time to anchor, we use it to find a good spot and as we drop the anchor the one at the helm pushes the pin button creating a marker for the anchor location. ?? Anchor Pro An app which works as an anchor alarm. We use the position from the Navionics marker and type it into the Anchor Pro app. There is an error margin as we get the position at the helm and the anchor is at the bow, but it works well enough! We then put in an allowed radius depending on the amount of chain and general surroundings. The app sounds an alarm if we go outside that radius. It's not necessary to have the Pro version, but it allows for the app to send notifications to other units if the alarm goes off. ? Telegram It's an app for chats and communication. For us, we use it to communicate with the Anchor Pro app. As long as we have internet onboard we can send a message in the Telegram app to the unit running the Anchor Pro and we get an instant reply with anchor distance and bearing. We also get instant notifications if there is an alarm. ?Marine Traffic It's an app for watching world wide AIS targets. As long as we leave the AIS running (and we are not in a too remote place) then we can watch our boat's position on here. If sh*t were to go really bad and Linnea would for some reason leave the anchorage without us, we could in theory track and find our boat this way. After crossing the finish line of our toughest sail yet, we get to enjoy the beautiful islands of Vestmannaeyjar - a group of islands just south of the Icelandic mainland. This is the time between two offshore passages when it's time to lick our wounds, get back in shape and prepare for what's next. While waiting for a storm to pass and a weather window to form between here and the Faroes, we learn about the island history and hike around in search for puffins. Iceland is slowly stealing our sailing hearts and even though it's a rather limited and short visit this time, we cannot wait to sail back here in the future! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Fair winds! ? Sunday Boat Tip [42/52] ? ELMER the hydrogenerator ? After sailing to Porto Santo (3 days) we figured there was no way we would make it across the Atlantic without stressing about the charging percentage of our batteries all the way. Those three days had been windy, cloudy and during the hours the sun was out it was always behind the sails casting minimal light on our solar panels. To make it, we had to run the engine to keep the batteries from flatting out. Something we absolutely hate!! Running the engine when there is wind to sail is a big NO NO for us. So we ordered this hydrogenerator, had it delivered to the Canaries and installed it in Teneriffe before our first Atlantic crossing. And it's been our best friend ever since! The main reason why we like it so much is that it keeps on doing its thing; day and night, mile after mile. It just works! And except from having to clean it from sargasso now and then, it doesn't require anything and you don't notice it's there. For offshore sailing I would say it makes absolute sense to have something like this to take the stress of battery charging off your mind. It's a great complement to our solar and the alternator on the engine. And as we don't like the bulkyness of wind generators, this is the only thing that we found suitable. We are not sponsored by Remoran to say this, but compared to what we have heard about other hydros breaking and being noisy, we are really glad we chose this one! So seriously - Get one, you won't regret it! The code LINNEASALE5 will give you 5% off any order placed on the Remoran website and free standard DHL shipping within the EU. (Other shipping alternatives are available but excluded from the discount.) The code is working until Feb 28th 2025. If this was useful for your boat life, make sure to save the post for later ?? Our time sailing in Greenland is coming to an end but we have lots of beautiful miles to cover before we get to the exit point and start heading offshore again. Prins Christian Sund (PCS) is a popular route for cruise ships and many tourist travel here each summer, but few can say that have sailed here with their own boat. As we sail along the sound, surrounded by high mountains we cannot help to smile as to where our dream have taken us. It's a beautiful nature, and we marvel at gorgeous glaciers, steep mountains reaching over 2,200 meters, crystal-clear waterfalls and untouched wildlife. Hope you enjoy it too! ? Sunday Boat Tip [1/52] ? Did you know that you can use common cooking oil to keep your boat toilet's flushing system smooth and easy flushing? It's really simple, you just take a tablespoon of the oil you have at hand and pour in into the toilet. Then, in empty mode, you pump a few pumps and then it's done. Do this 1-2 times every week and you'll soon see a difference! The oil will keep all the internal rubber parts soft and prolong their life span, meaning less shitty maintenance for you ? We usually do this in the evening so it can sit for the night ? Extra tip: If you have canned food that's preserved in oil (like sun dried tomatoes or mushrooms) it's perfect to use the oil that's left in the can before throwing it out. Be sure to save this post to remember it the next time you see your boat toilet ?
