Wind had disappeared when we launched. The Opti kids were out training. After a bit of dull sailing, we were hit with a header puff out of nowhere, which I couldn't respond to fast enough. The boat rolled over on top of us, back-winded, for the viewing pleasure of one of Olympia's waterfront restaurants.

This is a summary of the last four years of rebuilding and then sailing this once proud Flying Dutchman sailboat. Originally built in 1973 and sailed regionally in California, I picked it up in a poor state as a project in 2018. The discovery of a rotten balsa core in the hull led to an almost complete rebuild. The outer fiberglass of the hull, the centerboard and centerboard well, many rigging parts, practice sails and trailer are all that remain of the original.
