Episode 1 of 'Classical Gas' features PART 1 of the interview of the amazing legend Lea Salonga. This is a very special 'Classical Gas' for me, as it's the one where I chat to and interview an absolute hero of mine. The wonderful Lea Salonga. All through my stage school days my friends and I would always be singing along with Lea, even pretending to be her, and definitely wanting to sound like her. Lea created the role of Kim in Miss Saigon, my absolute favourite musical. I used to love getting a last minute ticket in 'the gods' at Drury Lane on a Saturday afternoon to watch Lea with a friend. We would even have to use the little red theatre binoculars from the seats in front, because we were so far away! Fans of all ages will also recognise Lea as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin and Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II. Joanna shot to fame in 2017 when she broke records becoming the first independent artist to go straight to Number 1 in the Official Classical Artists Album Charts with a debut album, "Stars Are Rising". Her 2nd album, "The Rhythm of Life", released in 2019, also shot straight to the top of the classical charts on release. Both albums received critical acclaim across TV, Radio and National Press including Album of the Week in The Sunday Mirror. Joanna entered the world of classical crossover in 2014 following a successful West End and TV career. Her first public performance as a crossover artist was in duet with Britain's Got Talent megastar, Paul Potts, at The Palace Theatre, London who later also guest duetted with Joanna on "The Rhythm of Life" with a new arrangement of Boccelli's "Because We Believe". Further recordings include 4 more classical Number 1 singles with "The Royal Platinum Love Song", released to celebrate 70 years of marriage between The Queen and Prince Philip. 'World in Union 2020' created to remember the life of Sgt Matt Ratana, which as well topping the Classical chart rose to No 24 in the main chart. Joanna topped the charts with two more collaborations with Royal composer Dr Olga Thomas. A Top 10 classical Christmas hit, "That is his Story" and a lead appearance on the Sir Paul McCartney backed "Choirs with Purpose" Stand Together album backed by a 600 strong choir. No stranger to high profile performances, Joanna has sung on the pitch at Premier League and Championship Football Grounds, on BBC's Songs of Praise performing "Ave Maria", as lead soloist at the prestigious Bedford Park Proms, York's Castle Howard Proms, and the Isle of Wight Proms,. Joanna has sung in theatres up and down the UK and on her own nationwide tour. Joanna has shared the bill with huge stars such as Kylie, Pixie Lott and Paloma Faith. Joanna presents her radio show 'Classical Gas with Joanna Forest' on Great British Radio. I totally fell in love with this album, it takes me back to spending time with my school friends. We all knew every word. To me this song is all about being a good friend, checking in on someone who may be struggling and asking if they are REALLY ok. Soprano Joanna Forest and renowned 'doodle a day' artist Gary Andrews have collaborated to create a beautiful video to compliment the No1 award winning classical singers version of Hushabye Mountain, from her album 'The Rhythm of Life' In the ethereal video, viewers are taken on a journey which offers light at the end of a tunnel, reflecting on the difficult year gone by, with sketches of a family taking off their masks and at last reunited brought to life by Gary Andrews. Joanna and Gary are urging viewers to send the video to friends and family as a 'virtual hug' to offer comfort and joy at the end of a year that has tested many in ways never experienced before. Speaking of the collaboration, Joanna Forest said: 'In a year that has seen challenges like no other, music has been so healing for people. I really wanted to mark the end of this strange time and to offer some comfort through the power of song. As a huge fan of Gary's work I knew he would be able to take my ideas from my brain to the screen. What he has created is simply beautiful.' Gary Andrews, who has gained a huge following for his frank and moving account of grief through his daily sketches of family life and his book 'Finding Joy' said ' I was so delighted to work on this with Joanna. Hushabye Mountain is such a moving song and if ever we needed a collective virtual hug, now is the time.'
