In this episode, we finally solve the mystery behind the boat engine's screaming alarm-a worn-out fan belt! After a quick replacement, the engine runs smoothly again, allowing us to move from the marina to a nearby anchorage while waiting for our new roller furler to arrive. Despite the rainy weather, we managed to install the roller furler without major issues, a critical upgrade before our next ocean passage. We also cleared out of French Polynesia-surprisingly easy, and we later learned we could've done it online! Now, with the boat prepped and paperwork ready, our next destination is the Cook Islands-stay tuned for the next adventure! #Sailing #BoatRepair #FrenchPolynesia #SailboatLife #RollerFurler #CustomsClearance #CookIslands

After two nights of rest in Puerto Inglés, we are on tour way back to Valdivia. This is our last leg and we will sail along the Pacific coast. The clam water of Patagonia and Chiloe is over and we'll befacing ocean waves and boat rolling. The outside bay of Puerto Inglés is surprisingly beautiful. The beach is full of little colorful pebbles. As we had some time to explore the bay this time, we found a whole patch of tea berries. In the bay, we came across a new seabird "Imperial Cormorrants". They look like penguins when standing on the shore. Ithaca's new friend, Boaty MC Boatface, is accompanying us as we are heading to the same marina in Estancilla. Of course, at the mouth of the canal, there are over falls. Plus the ocean waves, the boat is rolling and the ladies were getting seasick. There was no wind, or either too weak, we were running the engine all the way to Valdivia and safely tied to the jetty. Now we will stay here for a month and get ourselves ready for the Pacific. #sailaroundtheworld #sailboatlife #chile #patagoniachile #ithacacruising

We had been waiting for a week in Quemchi for a perfect weather window to cross canal Chacao. on the 14th March, there was finally a window with light west wind, in comparison to the strong north wind blowing most of the time. We think this is our chance, because there was no chance of downwind sailing in the canal recently, and we had a deadline of getting to Santiago on 20th March for our French Polynesia visa interviews. So our 3 conditions to cross the canal are: 1. high tide, arrive at the mouth at the high tide or 1 hour before high. Thus, the ebb current can flow the boat out of the canal into the Pacific. (on the other hand, inbound canal Chacao, you will need to go at the low tide in Puerto Inglés, please refer to my video Episode 29) 2. during the day, it is better to cross the canal during the day, not in the dark, for safety reasons. 3. downwind or no wind. The forecast weather is very light wind, but the canal does gather more wind than predicted. luckily, it was not bad and we could go through easily without any worries. PS: if you go through at high tide or after high, you will experience very strong riptides, the boat could fly at 11-12 knots of speed easily here. Once we passed the narrowest part of the canal, we spotted a few dolphins in the channel to swim with Ithaca and Ithaca's new friend, Boaty MC Boatface, a German sailboat, which met in Estero Pindo. These dolphins were so adorable and jumped out of the water like a show to us. Thank you dolphins! We always appreciate them accompanying us and they make the ocean a more magical place. For the first time, we anchored inside the Puerto Inglés bay because the water outside is a bit rolly and not comfortable. The bay is fairly big and have enough space for anchoring, even with a few boats. The salmon farm or oyster farm is close to the side and didn't bother us at all. The only tricky part is that you don't know the depth inside, so you have to watch. We anchored in about 4-5 meters. Our friend Boaty MC Boatface anchored nearby and had no issues at all. We will stay here for 2 nights, then the south wind will come and we need to sail in the Pacific ocean and head north to Valdivia. #sailaroundtheworld #patagoniachile #sailboatlife

This trip, from Pindo to Quemchi, we experienced a very strong riptide, from whirlpools to the view of boiling water and boiling oil, very fascinating and scary. luckily, the bay and channel is wide enough and caused no danger to us. In a place with 8 meters tidal range, where to tie the dinghy is always a challenge if there are no floating pontoons. The local fisherman of Quemchi caught a big snoek by dragging the line with his small boat in the bay. We tried the same, but caught nothing, only seaweed. ?? We also tried to make some local Chilean food, like Pulmay, with the clamps and mussels gifted from the fisherman. Now, we are waiting for a weather window to cross the canal Chacao. #sailaroundtheworld #patagoniachile #sailboat #chile #ithacacruising

Pailad in Chiloe is such a lovely place, that the captain couldn't resist not revisiting it. We had some very good and calm days in 2019 when we stayed here for a week. It is still beautiful as always, with black neck swans and other wild birds and ducks along the water bank. Every morning, the landscape is covered partially here and there by the mist and it creates an unforgettable view. A strong north wind was forecasted for the area, including the whole Chiloe island and its surroundings. All ports and operations were closed. We were too optimistic for the anchorage and didn't move. Anyway, we weren't sure if there was another one better. The current took us by surprise ? and it created a bit of a complicated situation in the strong wind. We raised the mizzen to keep the boat facing the wind. After the blow, Ithaca is on the way again. The next anchorage is Pindo. #sailaroundtheworld #sailboatlife #ithacacruising

In the morning 3rd March 2024, we lifted the anchor of our last anchorage in Isla Amita Patagonia. From Ithaca anchorage to Golf Corcovado, we made 2 stops to short the trip to avoid sailing at night, Caleta San Pedro and Isla Amita. Caleta San Pedro has a small salmon farm near the entrance, but it is wide and not so close to the entrance. The bay inside is a good size to anchor a few boats. A good protected anchorage for both north and south wind. Also in this bay, we received a most welcomed experience from Patagonia dolphins. They came to greet Ithaca, and later on accompanying us by the dinghy all the way to the shore. Such friendly creatures! Isla Amita didn't protect us from the south west wind. The beach has no much to see, not even spot much mussels. After exploring, the petrol is finished and we had to go back to Ithaca without engine. But luckily the wind is blowing downward. All we need to do is to make sure that we wouldn't miss the boat. Rowing with little paddles in strong head wind is insane. ? Good bye Patagonia! Now we are heading back to civilization.

When you worried about something too much, it might give you a big suprise. We witnessed the super calm Golf Corcovado. Even so, but the boat is still rolling to make you feeling sick. A short break in Canal San Pedro to rest at night before heading to Quellón on 4th March. Quellón is a big and busy harbour, especially on a day with fishing boats coming in. Kids bought a gift for Ouma, but it was falling out of the pockets when lifting the snubber from the anchor chain. He went for a swim to rescue it ? Now we need to head to our next anchorage Pailad.

Our first try of flying the drone on the boat. it's challenging as we are still learning to fly and video the drone on the same time. The Drone view is really amazing... #patagoniachile #sailaroundtheworld #ithacacruisinglife

Previously in 2019, when Ithaca sailed in Patagonia, we saw whales a few times, but mostly far and distance. In the early morning 28th Feb 2024, we left the anchorage of Puerto Aguirre and heading north. We spotted some whales swimming in the channel. Two humpback whales took us in surprise when I was videoing them excitedly. Because only in video, I realised that the whales were crossing the channel in front of our path. We must cut the engine immediately to slow down the boat to give them way. In reward, the whales spouted all the times and once passed, they showed us a beautiful tail splash before heading down. Afterwards, we sailed back to Caleta ITHACA, 30 nautical miles, to enjoy this anchorage one more time, for it's rich crabs and quiet solitaire. We flied the drone to give a full view of the anchorage, to keep the good memory of Patagonia. #patagoniachile #sailaroundtheworld #sailboatlife #chile #ithacacruisinglife music by Xavier Luna, Lost On You
